This flea is too hot to handle

When you think of fleas, you might think of those tiny insects that bite your pets and feed off of their blood. And occasionally star in a tiny circus. Well, not anymore. There is a new fleet of fleas causing a riot across the internet, and these fleas are fearsome! Take this Riotflea 29, codenamed Scorch, by Anthony Wilson, please take it, and take it far away. As the name implies, this bot is flaming hot, from the bright orange color scheme to the numerous flammable fuel tanks on its back. The series of angled pipes around the mid-section is a great detail, and the pipes are used again to wrap around the upper legs. The four eyes flanking the face give the bot a particularly alien look.

LEGO Disney BrickHeadz 40476 Daisy Duck and 40477 Scrooge McDuck, Huey, Dewey & Louie [Review]

Ever since LEGO first introduced Mickey and Minnie Mouse back in 2018, and followed up in 2020 with Goofy, Pluto, and Donald Duck, fans of these classic Disney characters may have noticed some missing characters; namely a few other ducks from the line-up. Well, the wait is now over, as LEGO is coming out with four new BrickHeadz in two sets: Daisy Duck (#126), and Donald’s Uncle Scrooge (#127), and his nephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie (#128-130). We received advance copies of the feathered family and we’re breaking it all down, and building them up to give you the scoop.

Both sets will be available on June 1st. 40476 Daisy Duck includes 110 pieces and is estimated to cost US $9.99 | CAN $TBD | UK £TBD while 40477 Scrooge McDuck, Huey, Dewey & Louie includes 340 pieces and is estimated to cost US $19.99 | CAN $TBD | UK £TBD.

Let’s get into it

The heart of the matter

Well, this story has clearly taken a dark turn. If you had the choice, would you replace that troublesome organ capable of causing so much pain? In this stark model by Revan New sinister-looking drone resents a cyborg with that very choice, as his intestines slither away (see what I did there? cuz its a red snake?). I’m not sure which is more disturbing, the heart, still pumping in a mechanical shell, or the fact that the blood on the floor seems to be flowing in the wrong direction.

Spindly scout walker strides along with style

There have been plenty of official LEGO AT-ST sets in all kinds of sizes over the years, but this model by Tim Goddard has got to be one of the best representations I’ve seen in a while—certainly at this size and level of detail. One of my favorite parts used is the plastic bit that comes between two shurikens—something many people consider trash—used for the grenade launcher on the left side of the photo. Connected to the base by a single point, the walker also has the perfect jaunty tilt to represent the chicken walk that gave the AT-ST its less popular name.

A bear in a balloon is something you don’t see everyday

How do you get a polar bear into a hot air balloon, anywho? Well, if you are Revan New, you build the bear and the balloon out of LEGO. Inspired by a favorite scene from the His Dark Materials novels by Phillip Pulman, the scene depicts the story’s protagonist and her band of unlikely friends soaring over snow-covered mountains in an unusual airship piloted by the skilled Aeronaut Lee Scoresby. I love all of the various bags and backpacks dangling from the rigging, as well as the hanging lanterns swaying in the wind—wind which also shapes the clouds passing below.

The builder includes another photo of the figures all lined up, with the perfect accessories, including Lyra and her golden compass.

LEGO BrickHeadz Minions: 40420 Gru and 40421 Belle Bottom [Review]

Minions 2: The Rise Of Gru, the sequel to the 2015 film Minions, and the fifth film in the Despicable Me franchise was originally scheduled to premiere on July 3rd, 2020. But like so many other movie and video game releases in recent years, it has been delayed, and delayed again. Now slated for July 2022. So while you may be bummed to have to wait another 15 months to see the movie, you can still get a fix of sorts with these two additions to the LEGO BrickHeadz line. LEGO BrickHeadz Minions 40420 Gru, Stuart & Otto includes 244 pieces, is available now on LEGO.com for US $19.99 | CAN $24.99 | UK £17.99; 40421 Belle Bottom, Kevin & Bob includes 309 pieces, and is available on LEGO.com for US $19.99 | CAN $24.99 | UK £17.99.

LEGO BrickHeadz Harry Potter 40495: Harry, Hermione, Ron and Hagrid [Review]

We have already had BrickHeadz of Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Hagrid all at the standard size, but LEGO has decided that we didn’t have enough Harry Potter. So they came out with this new version of Hagrid with the three most famous first years in Hogwarts’ recent history. What might not be clear at first glance is that these kids are not built on the 4×4 main character standard but rather on the smaller 3×3 buddy standard. This helps to maintain the proper scale when they gather around the lovable groundskeeper, Rubeus Hagrid. The set includes 466 pieces and will be available on June 1, 2021. LEGO has not released pricing information at the time of writing this review, but based on previous BrickHeadz sets with multiple characters, I would guess that the set will be around $24.99 US.

LEGO BrickHeadz Harry Potter 40496: Voldemort, Nagini and Bellatrix [Review]

If you are a fan of the Harry Potter franchise and a collector of BrickHeadz, you might be scratching your head at the one-sided line-up released so far, which includes the three heroes of the story, along with Dumbledore, Hagrid, Buckbeak, and Newt, but only one villain so far, Gellert Grindelwald. Well, that is about to change. With the upcoming release of a brand new batch of bad guys and girls. That’s right, the most feared villain in history, He Who Must Not Be Named himself, Lord Voldemort, is finally joining the ranks of BrickHeadz along with his snake Nagini and Bellatrix Lestrange. LEGO BrickHeadz Harry Potter 40496 Voldemort, Nagini, and Bellatrix includes 344 pieces and will be available starting June 1, 2021. LEGO has not released a price or parts count at the time of this review, but based on previous multi-character sets, I’m guessing it will be around $24.99 US.

Let’s jump right in

A small guardian of the forest with a big heart

You don’t have to be big to have a big job, as this epic 101 part model of a forest guardian by Markus Rollbühler proves. The flower at the heart of the model is just one of many perfectly placed flower and leaf elements, but there are also some great “building” tricks, like the curved brown sloped parts used for the lower arms, which are gently wedged into the undersides of those wonderfully bulbous sleeves. And the hands and ankles, which use clip plates tucked into the underside of the arms and feet. A soft glow added to the staff give the finished figure a magical finish.

Some mushrooms are for eating, some are deadly, but this mushroom girl by Miscellanabuilds will warm your heart like no other fungus can. This model of a mushroom girl picking wildflowers in the forest is adorable, from her spotted skirt to her mushroom hat/head. Even those ridged round bricks used for her legs look just like the stems of the Amanita muscaria, which was the inspiration for this fun fungus.

Bounty hunting is a dangerous profession

While Mos Eisley may be the most wretched hive of scum and villainy in the galaxy, there are plenty of contenders for runner-up when it comes to rough and tumble locations where you would be wise to have someone to watch your back. Darth Bjørn shines a light on one such location on Devaron, the homeworld of the devil-like beings first glimpsed on the famous Mos Eisley cantina. The rock work at the base forms a solid foundation for this shady outpost, which sports a number of non-specific vents, domes, and other mechanical details. The weather-worn walls are built using plates of various colors stacked vertically, which provides an unexpected texture.
