The brave men did not kill dragons. The brave men rode them.

The majestic and fiery Drogon from Game of Thrones is beautifully brought to life in LEGO by Marcin Otreba, complete with the signature red wings sporting black and red scales. At perhaps a minifigure scale and built to the wingspan of 38 inches with flexible joints at the neck and tail, owning your very own dragon has never been more within grasp.

All hail Daenerys Stormborn of House Targaryen, Rightful Heir of the Iron Throne, Rightful Queen of the Andals and the First Men, Protector of the Seven Kingdoms, the Mother of Dragons, the Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, the Unburnt, the Breaker of Chains.

I work all night, I work all day, to pay the bills I have to pay

Builder Mike M. transports us to a despondent scene entitled “Late Night Stress”. Here a sorrowful-looking character slumps over a desk whose contents suggest a whole world of financial woes. I really like the various details and printed parts used to create the basement. The view through the window, or lack thereof, creates a real sense of being trapped and confined. Couple that with the gloomy lighting and you’ve got an excellent LEGO scene, but not a place I’d like to spend much time.

Come and play with us, for ever and ever and ever

Take a ride on your tricycle down the hall — just look who you might bump into. It’s the iconic Grady Twins from The Shining, recreated in LEGO by Matt Forrest. The use of the Alice In Wonderland minifigure reversed is very clever in capturing the look of the girls’ outfits. It’s not often plastic bricks manage to send a shiver down the spine, but this creation does the job.

Legendary warrior revived as huge LEGO figure

Gatot Kaca, from the scriptures of the Mahabharata, is a legendary warrior with magical powers of flight. In the modern world he has become popular once more as a superhero in a game called Mobile Legends: Bang Bang. This is the version of the character depicted in LEGO by Dennis Qiu. The model took about 3 months to build, stands 1.4 meters tall, and consists of 19,780 pieces.

To get a better sense of the scale, here is Dennis standing beside the model. The inner frames were built using Technic parts for stability and sturdiness. With a tall build like this, the challenge is to find the center of gravity and the right arrangements of knees and ankle to ensure it stays upright.

Giant LEGO F4U Corsair

One of the latest and greatest propeller-driven aircraft of WW2 is surely the F4U Corsair. The American fighter is instantly recognizable with its inverted gull wing. Brought to life in LEGO by Patrick MAGO this monster of a model is built at a scale of roughly 1:10. It has a wingspan of 1 meter and weighs in at a hefty 6 kg (13 pounds).

It took Patrick approximately 10 months to build the model, and he had to redesign it no less than 3 times during the process to deal with the weight. Beyond the structure itself, a big challenge in such a build is the limited selection of dark blue parts available.

A crook with a hook and a flustered fabled fairy

A while ago, we featured a build from Jae Won Lee of a very emotionally stressed Tinker Bell. With this updated build in the picture, it all now makes sense. A larger-than-life Captain Hook seems to have captured Tinkerbell! I must admit those eyeballs set deep within his sockets give off a frightful look.

All is not what it seems as he has built a mechanical laugh to give life to the dastardly Hook – check out the video for it in action!

I’ll take that Falcon with a splash of bricks

Most people may not think so, but LEGO builders really are artists in their own right. The medium that they choose to express themselves in is simply tiny bricks instead of the traditional tools of oil and canvas that we see more often. The traditional approach of interlocking these bricks is the expected aspect of it, but a more unusual approach is the loose placement of bricks, such as this spread by city son.

This design is a breath of fresh air to the overdose that the Millennium Falcon is getting recently due to the largest set ever being released by the folks over at Billund (plus a couple of major contests inspired by the venerable freighter). What stands out with this piece of art is the colorful, celebratory effect showcasing the Falcon in flight. It almost looks like a splash of rainbow paint in pop-art style.

Master Wu’s Secret Hideout

This looks like it could have come straight from The LEGO Ninjago Movie. Titled “Master Wu’s Secret Hideout,” this temple-like structure by Lysander Chau is comprised of a nice mix of future Zen-type designs on the bottom third of the build and the remaining two floors are very classical Ninjago-ish themes. What makes it stand out a little more is its use of gold adornments — just enough to make it feel grand but at the same time homely. I’m beginning to wonder if Master Wu has a second job in order to afford such a luxurious abode.

It’s close to midnight, and something evil lurkin’ in the dark...

There were a couple of things about Plants vs Zombies that kept me hooked to the game a little longer than it was probably supposed to – the mesmerizing and never-ending melody and seeing this particular reference to Michael Jackson in zombie form! Builder Hsinwei Chi beautifully captures the in-game version of Michael in full detail, including his signature one-handed white glove. The power of pop culture just makes me want to whip out my mobile device and take it for another spin!

The unappreciated droids from classic Star Wars

GNK Power Droids are better known as “Gonk” droids because of the low, honking sounds they produce while moving about. This larger build by Eric Druon gives us a close-up detail of what we usually see represented with smaller bits and fewer details.

I do appreciate how the builder took the time to even showcase the battery packs inside. The best way to understand its purpose in today’s context is the equivalent of your mobile power chargers — they’re there to provide juice whenever you need it. If there’s one thing from the future that needs to happen soon, this is it. We’re definitely going to need more of these turned into a reality as they simply wander around on-screen as in the Star Wars movies, and I’m assuming be available for you on demand. It certainly beats carrying around an additional battery pack in your pocket today.

Chris McVeigh’s My First Computer DOS Edition [Review]

Even if you’ve not heard of Chris McVeigh, you’ve probably seen his builds in one way or another, especially his iconic Classic Mac that’s been featured quite a bit across the media. As a brick artist, Chris specializes in capturing fragments of details in tiny builds that give maximum impact. The other great part about Chris’s builds is that all of his build guides are available free for download and all you need to do to enjoy his wonderful creations are to source the bricks from sites like Bricklink or gather what you have from your very own stash. Of course, there are those that may not have the time or knowledge of the secondary LEGO market to gather all those parts, which makes purchasing a custom kit directly from the artist becomes a great option. For those that do, there’s no detail spared in the experience. Trust me on this, I’m going to bet that you’ll be impressed by the level of care and detail that Chris puts into this.

She pretty much has the looks, and I’m confident she’s got it where it counts.

The Sidewinder by Railblade caught my eye for its balanced resemblance to the Millennium Falcon we all know and love, yet something different — just enough to make it believable and a bit of extra effort to make the ship hospitable.

It’s got a cozy sleeping quarters and even a proper bridge for control and co-piloting functions. The color theme is both space-y and earthly which gives a nice clean weathered effect. My favorite part is the three heavy-duty thrusters that guarantee warp speed that’s definitely going to give Han Solo a run for his republic credits.

There’s been quite a number of Falcons thanks to several competitions going around, if you haven’t already sent in your entry for our very own TBB competition, time is running out, and you can tell Luke Skywalker that you ARE actually going take your reward (if you win) and leave.
