LEGO displays from SEALUG & more at Emerald City Comicon 2016 in Seattle [News]

For the last 5 years, LEGO clubs in the Pacific Northwest have put on a huge display at Emerald City Comicon in Seattle, which will be taking place at the Washington State Convention Center in just a couple of weeks, April 7-10.

TBB’s own Iain Heath is hard at work right now putting the finishing touches on his talk, titled The Cult of the Brick: An Inside Look at the Secret World of LEGO Fandom.

Most ECCC tickets are sold out at this point, but if you’re among the tens of thousands of people who’ll be there over the course of the 4-day event, be sure to check out Iain’s talk and swing by the lower level across the street from the main WSCC entrance.

Kamen Rider Black brings back 80’s Japanese nostalgia

As my family left Japan in 1989 after 15 years there, one of the memories I carried with me was all the TV shows my brother and I had watched. While my own favorite was Ultraman, my brother preferred Kamen Rider (the “Masked Rider”). One of the best and most popular incarnations of the titular hero was the Kamen Rider Black series, which aired just before we left Japan, in 1987 and 1988.

Moko has been building various LEGO versions of Kamen Rider for at least the last 10 years — I first featured minifig versions of the characters way back in 2006 — and his latest Kamen Rider features a chibi version of our hero pulling a wheelie astride his iconic “Battlehopper” motorcycle.

Kamen Rider Black

Kamen Rider himself is fully posable, and Moko says that this is his first attempt at a non-minifig scale motorbike. Moko makes great use of LEGO rubber elements in this build: The red and yellow lines on the character are built from rubber bands, and the motorcycle tires are tank treads on radar dishes.

Kamen Rider Black

Moko says that the first Kamen Rider show he watched was the RX series that immediately followed Black, and he only watched Black later, but really loves the show despite its age — which, you know, makes me feel a bit old… You can see more photos on Moko’s blog (in Japanese).

Terran Dominion & Zerg bases from StarCraft II in microscale LEGO

Last year at BrickWorld, a group of builders created a 14-foot-long LEGO StarCraft II display. One of the builders, Cecilie Fritzvold has just now posted detailed photos of her own sections, expanded and updated so she can display them separately at other events — and they’re definitely worth a closer look, especially if you missed the huge display last year.

Cecilie’s Terran Dominion base includes everything you need to survive a Zealot rush, from the Command Center to Barracks and a Factory, bunkers for perimeter defense, and plenty of resources.

LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens – How it Should Have Ended [Video]

Our friends over at Brotherhood Workshop have teamed up with “How it Should Have Ended” to create this hilarious brick-built alternate ending to The Force Awakens. I won’t spoil the funny with commentary — just watch the video.

With the movie coming out on DVD & Blu-ray in a few weeks, plus summer 2016 LEGO Star Wars sets just around the corner, expect the recent lull in LEGO Star Wars creations to end fairly soon…

Beware the deadly embrace of the facehugger!

The lifecycle of the xenomorphs in the Alien franchise is fascinating — from egg to facehugger to chestburster to a rapidly growing black monster. While we’ve seen many LEGO xenomorphs over the years, including a great minifig-scale version by TBB’s own Tim Lydy, but not too many other stages in the creature’s lifecycle (other than the amazing LEGO chestburster by the Arvo Brothers nearly 10 years ago). Tim has corrected this with a wonderful vignette featuring a facehugger leaping from its egg sack towards a surprised Colonial Marine.

Facehugger Strikes by Tim Lydy on Flickr

Tim uses minifig hands to represent the facehugger’s flailing arms, and suspends the jumping facehugger above its empty egg case with clear LEGO. The expression on the doomed marine’s face is priceless.

Vaygr Minelayer Corvette is almost cute

Many of the LEGO spaceships inspired by Homeworld are huge carriers and cruisers, but this Vaygr minelayer corvette and escort ships are no less excellent in their striped glory. Damien Labrousse has captured the classic Homeworld aesthetic of bold colors, harsh angles, and exposed machinery in a wonderfully compact scale. The red brick-built V shape on the side of the corvette is a particularly nice touch.

Steampunk Volkswagen van goes where there are no roads

Matthew Hocker drew the “Steampunk-ify any Fiat 500 or VW Microbus” category in the LUGNuts 100th Challenge that we’re sponsoring, and the results are spectacular. I first clicked on the photo because I was intrigued by the VW bus, with a certain time traveling mad scientist building new toys, but what ultimately impressed me most is the desert landscaping, with cactuses in full bloom.

Steampunk Volkswagen Camper

The van itself falls into the classic steampunk color scheme of mostly brown and metallic, but is delightfully executed, with ornate gold smokestacks.

LEGO Ideas 21305 Maze by Jason Allemann finally unveiled [News]

It’s been nearly four years since we first highlighted Jason Allemann’s LEGO marble maze, and nearly a year since the LEGO Ideas team announced that Jason’s project had been approved as a future LEGO set. Jason Allemann and his kinetic sculptures will be familiar to regular readers of TBB — it seems like not a week goes by when we don’t highlight one of Jason’s amazing LEGO creations, so we’ve been excited about this set for some time. But good things come to those who wait, and LEGO has finally unveiled LEGO Ideas 21305 Maze.

The set will include 769 pieces and retail for $69.99 in the US and $89.99 in Canada, due out on April 1st. We’ll have a pre-release review of the set to share with our readers in a couple of weeks.
