Harfleur under siege

According to Wikipedia, the French town of Harfleur changed hands between the English and the French repeatedly between 1415 and 1562, including being pillaged by the Huguenot.

I’m not sure which particular incident Brickshelfer Reejoc is illustrating with this Castle creation, but things don’t look good for the residents of Harfleur:

Laputa: Castle in the Sky flaptters by Horace Cheng

I didn’t think that Horace Cheng could improve on the wonderful flaptters (from Hayao Miyazaki’s Laputa: Castle in the Sky) we featured here a couple of years ago, but Horace proves me wrong with a “version 2”:

Laputa Flaptter on Flickr

Though I kind of miss the grill, the overall shape is much better, and the chain works rather well for the safety rail. The Photoshop job certainly adds to the charm, with “Laputa: Castle in the Sky” in Japanese (天空の城ラピュタ).

Dragonator defends the Ravine Tavern against a goblin horde

Reader ExoBuilder sends word of a great Castle creation called “The Ravine Tavern” by Dragonator:

The half-timber house presents a nice contrast to the stonework, and I love the tree-lined street. Go Crown Knights, go! (Though I think the goblin horde is pretty darn cool.)

Kwi Chang goes bipedal

Kwi Chang‘s latest mecha has a unique cockpit configuration and an amazing number of missiles, in addition to the chin-mounted chain-gun:

As a side note, low-slung walker-type mecha seem to be more popular among Western builders (inspired by the iconic AT-ST or the MechWarrior games, perhaps), while Japanese builders tend toward the humanoid (most certainly inspired by Gundam and the like). Maybe I’m right, maybe I’m not. What do you think?

New LEGOLAND to open in Dubai in 2011 [News]

In news sure to excite our 16 readers in the United Arab Emirates, Merlin Entertainments Group (owners of the LEGOLAND theme parks) has announced that it will be opening LEGOLAND Dubailand in 2011.

Here’s an excerpt from the press release:

LEGOLAND Dubailand is scheduled to open at the end of 2011, and will be a 3 million square-foot theme park project forming part of DUBAILAND(TM), the world’s most ambitious tourism, leisure and entertainment destination. Similar to the existing four LEGOLAND Parks at Billund, Denmark; Germany; Windsor and California … LEGOLAND Dubailand features more than 40 interactive rides, shows and attractions geared towards families with children ages 2 to 12.

Any of you in the UAE or neighboring countries care to share your thoughts?

Win an autographed Temple Escape set in the Indy contest on Klocki [w00t!]

If you’ve been wondering what MisterZumbi has been up to lately, wonder no more. Like Jamie Berard and Mark “Nabii” Stafford, Adam “MisterZumbi” Grabowski is the latest LEGO fan to pull up stakes, move to Billund, and start working as a set designer for The LEGO Company.

To celebrate Adam’s accomplishment and the release of the new Indiana Jones movie, Klocki is hosting an Indiana Jones Building Contest.

There are three categories — vignette, diorama, and large-scale (UCS) model. The coolest prize? A copy of 7623 Temple Escape autographed by the designer, Adam himself.

Ton histoire est une épopée / Des plus brillants exploits.

O Horace Cheng! You inspire true patriot love in all of us, even those of us who aren’t Canadian.

Prancing through the steam with Simon Tzidik

You’d think the steampunk walker has been done to death (and perhaps it has), but occasionally I see something new I just have to blog. Today, that’s Simon Tzidik‘s “Steam Prancer,” which uses whips for its feet:

Some say the world will end in fire...

…some say in ice. Shannon Ocean (MOCPages) sends minifig scientists to investigate both possibilities in this double vignette:

You are a community

Yes, you, readers of The Brothers Brick!

Over the years, our readership has grown from a handful of dedicated readers to tens of thousands of you out there on the Web. Many of you are active in other LEGO communities, both online and “in real life,” but a vast majority of you probably don’t know what a “MOC” (My Own Creation) or an “AFOL” (Adult Fan of LEGO) is.

And we’re cool with that. We love the fact that you find what we do interesting enough to subscribe to our feed, leave lots of comments, link to us, send us suggestions, and even support what we do by buying LEGO.

As a LEGO Ambassador over the last year, I hope you feel that I’ve represented you well, passing along news from LEGO and sending LEGO your feedback and suggestions.

As we move into the 2008-2009 LEGO Ambassadors cycle, I’m happy to accept Nelson’s nomination in the original announcement about this new process.

However, I’d like to open things up to all of you to make suggestions about who you think should represent The Brothers Brick (as an online “AFOL Community Group”) in the next cycle of the LEGO Ambassadors program.

So far, here are the people who’ve been nominated here on The Brothers Brick:

Here’s how this is going to work:

  1. Between now and May 10 at 9:00 PM Pacific Time, please add your suggestions for people who you would like to see nominated as a comment on this post.
  2. On May 10, I’ll tabulate all of the nominations, and all of you can vote on who you want to see represent The Brothers Brick.
  3. If necessary, we’ll have a “runoff election” to narrow the nominations to three people.
  4. On May 24, once the people have spoken (that’s you!), we’ll submit our three nominations to LEGO.
  5. So, without further ado, let the nomination discussion begin!
