It’s nice to take break from huge builds and enjoy a LEGO creation that’s zoomed in a bit more. Hubba Blöoba invites to visit Middle Earth in this nifty little vignette. The Iron Forge 2021 seed part of the minifigure torso inspired this build, appearing as windows and…clouds? Sure, why not? The rolling green hills are also well executed, as is the forced perspective from the gate in the foreground leading to the seemingly distant burrow. Other cool details are the ox horns framing the front door, and the grill tile forming the slats in the fencing. Careful, though. This sort of creative part usage can be hobbit forming.

Are you ready to be Spirited Away? Rylie Howerter is ready help to start the journey with this astounding recreation of the Red Gate. This is one of those builds that has you doing a triple take – but, yes, this all LEGO. Amazing photography adds great atmospheric depth of field , but the trees and other greenery in the foreground is what completely sells this neglected entrance to the unknown. There are even more detailed views at Ryan’s Instagram post, and I suggest you take a moment to explore those, too.

Early 2021 saw the latest expansion to LEGO’s DOTS theme with new Series 3 sets. These kits are designed to appeal to kids who are interested in arts and crafts, but they’ve found a lot of love with adult builders, too. DOTS 41921 Extra DOTS – Series 3 packs are available now for US $3.99 | CAN $4.99 | UK £3.99. Each bag contains a mix of 107 elements including new 3D tiles, a mix of quarter-circle and round 1×1 plate, and 10 printed tiles from a pool of 16 new designs. We conclude our tour of the January 2021 wave of sets with the Ninjago Legacy 71736 Boulder Blaster. There are lots of different versions of Transformers toys, and true children of the ’80s will remember that some were more focused on being cartoon-accurate action figures than on changing shape. Chungpo Cheng pays tribute to these important, classic, and often overlooked versions with a quartet of robotic heroes and villains. Soundwave, Megatron, Optimus Prime, and Jazz look like they could have stepped directly off the screen and directly into a long-forgotten aisle in Toys-R-Us. There’s some clever part usage to get the key shapes across this scale. Highlights include the domed 1×1 tiles on Megatron and Jazz’s heads, The Technic axle connector for the barrel of Megatron’s gun, and the modified 1×1 round plate with rod pieces used for Optimus’ exhaust stacks.
If you like your Transformers on the larger size, then you’ll be happy to know we’ve also featured a lot of other fan-built creations. But hopefully, we’ll see more action figures in this scale. Anyone up to add some microscale G.I. Joe characters for a crossover?
Where does the time go? It seems like only yesterday that Ninjago was the new theme on the block. Somehow, though, we’ve reached it’s tenth anniversary! The Legacy sub-theme is LEGO’s way of bringing back older sets with updated builds and features, but Ninjago Legacy 71742 Overlord Dragon is a little different. This is the first time that the Overlord Dragon has appeared in a LEGO set, making this return to Ninjago Season 2 extra special. Happily, the Ninjago Legacy theme lets fans revisit sets and events from previous seasons.
