Gears of Jelly

V&A Steamworks has released yet another incredibly detailed clockwork sea-creature into the ocean depths. This one wants to sting you.

LEGO Architecture Fallingwater and Guggenheim now available [News]

Might not be news for everybody, but I’ve been checking the LEGO Shop online off and on since we heard about the new Frank Lloyd Wright LEGO Architecture sets, and it looks like they’re finally available to order.

Fallingwater includes 811 pieces and goes for $100.

The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum costs $40 and has 208 pieces.

Quadrupedal Armored Core mecha by Kyle Vrieze

LEGO armored core mecha

It’s always nice to see something other than the standard bipedal mecha, like this great four-legged stomper by Kyle Vrieze (bermudafreze). Beyond the non-standard leg configuration, Kyle’s mecha has very cool feet and shoulders.

Charlie & the Chocolate Factory is much less terrifying in LEGO

As much as I enjoyed Roald Dahl’s classic book, I was fairly traumatized as a young child by “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.” The recent, correctly titled Johnny Depp vehicle was only slightly less sinister. Craig Lyons (LegoLyons) has captured the wonder and magic of Dahl’s writing in a series of LEGO vignettes, beginning with Augustus Gloop’s untimely — albeit temporary — end in the chocolate river.

More recently, Craig has posted one of the early scenes from Dahl’s sequel, Charle and the Great Glass Elevator, with lovely ice cream clouds.

I can’t wait for Craig’s LEGO interpretation of the vermicious knids. SCRAM!

Meet Michael, the microscale miniature dachshund

The miniaturization of LEGO dachshunds continues. Brickshelfer w9gfo recently posted this lovely little dog, completely with lolling tongue.

Here’s hoping Joel’s puppy enjoyed this post as much as Josie did.

Time-Bending in 100 Parts or Less

Crimson Wolf uses great techniques and parts for this Steampunk creation. I particularly like the parts used on the windows:

It probably helps that I’m a sucker for sepia tones in photography, but I like that the treatment on this gives it a sort of “old-timey” flair.

You can check out more entries for the 100-Part Challenge at the Steampunk Flickr group.

Sartorius will tailor your clothes and then run away with your womenfolk

LEGO Bionicle Sartorius

Cameron (Primus) draws inspiration from Greek and Roman mythology for his latest Bionicle creation.

RZ-1 A-Wing interceptor by Jarek

Jarek (Jerrec) has updated his red A-Wing to match Ralph McQuarrie’s original blue color scheme.

LEGO Star Wars RZ-1 A-Wing

With all its curves, angled tail fins, and that strange gap in the nose, the A-Wing is an especially challenging starfighter to build with LEGO. Jarek does an amazing job at minifig scale to capture the shape and details.

Free Squiddy! Alien rights now!

LEGO Space Police III Free Squidman!I really do love the new Space Police III theme, from the wonderful alien minifigs to the subtle in-jokes that the designers incorporated throughout their sets.

Nevertheless, a running joke among LEGO fans is that the line is xenophobic and defames sentient non-human life forms.

Seeing District 9 last night (based on Alive in Joberg from 2005), reminded me of this great webcomic from Shortpacked! Click the preview pic below to read the full comic.

Of course, LEGO designer Mark Stafford has explained that “Space Police are only responsible for interspecies crime… Non criminal aliens are of course welcome to live and work in terran space.”

Sounds like a challenge to all you LEGO fans out there to build a creation that shows the new SPIII aliens in a more positive light.

Terror of the Radio Waves!

Rod Gillies has set sail with this hilarious vignette. I adore those little ships….

LEGO Radio Control Pirate

Thanks to Johan for the sighting.

Alphabet spaceships, anyone?

Mark Anderson has a unique project going on, namely a series of Alphabet Spacecraft. Honestly, I never heard of anything like this. I’ve seen series of vignettes made in alphabetical order, but actually building the shape of the letter as a ship? That’s a new one to me and pretty dang awesome, I’m thinking.

He is up to ‘H’ right now…here’s hoping he finishes the series!

Where they’re going, they don’t need names...

This unnamed creation by Tac is pretty spiffy. I love the tank, but that cyborg spider thing is the topping on the cake.
