LEGO Star Wars is one of the most popular LEGO themes of all time. Far beyond X-wings and TIE fighters, there’s a whole expanded universe of inspiration, and an army of LEGO fans ready to build whatever comes out of George Lucas’s head next.

The Assault on Kobaria isn’t an assault on our senses.

In a LEGO Star Wars universe of Endor, Andor and lovable robots, Stuart N takes us off-off-off world to a lesser-known location with this diorama called The Assault on Kobaria. Kobaria, as we all know, is from that one…thing we really, really like. It features that one guy we love and the other guy, too. And let’s not overlook that one hover-tank-spaceship-y thingie that I’m definitely not drawing a blank on—so don’t get that idea in your heads! Kobaria is home to the Kobarian swamp dogs so that certainly clears everything up. OK, you got me. Look, maybe I’m not as well-versed in the Star Wars expanded universe as I can be but even Wookieepedia wasn’t much help here so you can’t blame a guy for trying. Still, I know a cool LEGO creation when I see one and this is pretty cool. So either show me up on your extensive knowledge of Kobaria in the comments or take a deep dive into our Star Wars archives, whichever floats your hovertank.

Dig this Imperial base carved from alien stone

Jonas has crafted an original Imperial headquarters that speaks directly to my inner child. See, when I was a kid, there was absolutely nothing cooler to me than a base built into a huge chunk of rock. Whether it was Cobra Commander’s latest hideout, Boulder Hill, or the Autobots’ ship crashed into the side of a volcano – if you combined a high-tech headquarters with a massive hunk of rock, I was all in! And now to add Star Wars into the mix? It’s too great. This smooth metal space headquarters, with its curved edges, blends brilliantly into the hard, studded angles of the nearby alien landscape. It suggests we’re just seeing a single piece of the puzzle and there’s a whole cliffside that stretches on beyond the frame. It’s exactly the kind of place I always wanted to work. Instead, I have a home office in a duplex in SoCal. Which is kinda cool, I guess. Anyway, check out more of Jonas’s work blending nature with Imperial tech in our archives.

LEGO 75349: Captain Rex and LEGO 75350: Clone Commander Cody helmets [Review]

The Clone Wars era of Star Wars has been a subject of great interest to fans since Old Ben Kenobi first told a young Luke Skywalker about a time when Kenobi fought alongside Luke’s father. The prequel trilogy teased fans with the start and end of the war but left a pretty big gap in between. This year marks the 20-year anniversary of our first glimpse of what happened during the Clone Wars in the form of an animated series that aired on the Cartoon Network in 2003. Long-time fans of the 2008 animated series created by Dave Filoni will be very excited with the latest characters to join the LEGO Star Wars helmet series: Commander Cody and Captain Rex.

The 2008 Clone Wars animated series, which is now streaming on Disney+ included many episodes where these two clone troopers teamed up with Obi-wan Kenobi and Anakin on several missions. Many of the series episodes aired out of order, but Cody and Rex both first appeared chronologically in Season 1, episode 16 titled The Hidden Enemy, which aired on February 6, 2009. Commander Cody has appeared in the new series Star Wars: The Bad Batch. Captain Rex has appeared on Star Wars: Rebels, and Star Wars: The Bad Batch.

LEGO 75349 Captain Rex comes with 854 pieces and 75350: Clone Commander Cody includes 766 pieces. Both will be available on March 1 for US $69.99 | CAN $89.99 | UK £59.99 and US $69.99 | CAN $89.99 | UK £59.99 respectively.

Filling a void from 2005

Back when Youtube was founded and Hurricane Katrina was running amok in New Orleans, The Brothers Brick alum Nannan Zhang entered an Imperial Voidfighter spaceship into a LEGO contest of yore. The original entry was…modest to be sure but I’m certain, like fans of The Pussycat Dolls and Lifehouse, we were all quite thrilled at the time. Fast-forward more than seventeen years later and Nannan improved that design considerably. I like that it resembles a particularly mean crustacean with a badass Imperial color scheme.

Nannan goes on to tell us that the cockpit features a pilot minifig with an extremely rare dark bluish-gray Snowtrooper helmet from around 2010. (Only 2 known in existence!) That is as rare as fans of Lifehouse nowadays. Adversely, Don’t Cha by The Pussycat Dolls is still a thumpin’ jam and that’s a hill I’m willing to die on! Dontcha wish your girlfriend was a freak like me? I bet you do! While many of us are by now grayer, paunchier and hopelessly out-of-touch with what the kids are into these days, Nannan Zhang still remains a vital and highly influential builder. This Star Wars ship sets a new standard for LEGO Jedi Masters

I’ve been eagerly waiting for Instagram user TWP (@nl_twp) to complete his latest model, and it’s finally ready! While the Eta-2 Actis interceptor has been the subject of many a LEGO build, this has to be one of the best ones out there. The way all the angles match up is just sumptuous! One of TWP’s goals with this build was to incorporate a full Astromech body into the wing (something which even in the movies requires some considerable suspension of disbelief). The use of an arch piece is wonderfully integrated and works perfectly for this very purpose. Over 200 hours went into this and the thought really shows!

I encourage you to go and check out all the details – there’s a surprising amount to pore over, given the modest size of the ship. But to whet your appetite here’s a shot of the opening and fully detailed cockpit in its landed configuration. I love the use of the transparent minifigure stands for the head-up display!

LEGO Star Wars 501st Clone Troopers Battle Pack [Review]

Today we’ll take a quick look at the last of three new LEGO Star Wars sets for January 2023. 75345 501^st Clone Troopers Battle Pack returns to the popular 501^st Legion, with their distinctive blue markings. In fact, the 501^st was the subject of the most recent battle-pack-like set to feature clone troopers, 501^st Clone Troopers. Let’s see if it’s a worthwhile return to the subject matter. The set comes with 119 pieces and 4 minifigures and will be available Jan 1st for US $19.99 | CAN $24.99 | UK £17.99.

2022 LEGO Advent Calendars, Day 24

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Yes, it’s the holiday season, but it’s also the return of our annual LEGO advent calendar extravaganza. We’ll be opening our calendar windows every day in the run-up to Christmas. Our team will also share their thoughts, comments, observations and jokes about each day’s builds!

I always frigate what this ship is called...

Chances are you immediately recognize this ship built by Rubblemaker. Odds are equally good you don’t know its name. “EF76 Nebulon-B Escort Frigate” doesn’t stick in the mind like “X-Wing” or “Death Star,” but it has appeared in tons of Star Wars media over the years. It even served as the headquarters of the Rebel Alliance for a time. Rubblemaker’s midi-scale recreation of the ship is a fitting tribute to this often-overlooked piece of sci-fi history. Clocking in at 81cm long, 42cm high, and made from over 2500 pieces, this is actually Rubblemaker’s second attempt at the ship, and possibly the most accurate version ever built.

Beautifully greebled and full of clever angles and elegant slopes, the ship looks amazing photoshopped against the cosmos, but you might want to take in an unedited view to really appreciate all the work that went into the build. Note the in-scale Millennium Falcon docked along the ship’s spine. “Millennium Falcon.” Now that’s a name that stays with you!
