I feel the need, the need to burn some rubber

I’m a fan of the Studs-Not-On-Top (SNOT) techniques, especially for builds where you want the finished model to have few of the iconic LEGO studs visible. It’s a feat made even tougher on a smaller build, particularly if you need to keep the model looking true to its real-life counterpart. However, builder Jonathan Elliott seems to have a knack for pulling it off well. I still can’t decide on a favorite—the Mercedes AMG in white or the grey Porsche 911 Carrera, maybe? Actually, at this scale, I can own them both.

It’s got a cop motor, a 440 cubic inch plant, it’s got cop tires, cop suspensions, cop shocks.

Okay I may have got a little carried away, as it’s not quite the Blues Mobile. Put a giant megaphone on the roof and put a couple of suited, sunglassed musicians in the front seat and I reckon it’d look the part. Slovenian builder Primoz Mlakar has created a wonderful Speed Champions style Police Interceptor. Inspired by vehicles in Ken Block’s Gymkhana 7, the builder has captured the lines and curves of the classic black and white beautifully. Particularly impressive is the use of the tooth piece for a window pillar and the bad robot arms as nudge bars.

LEGO Speed Champions 75877 Mercedes-AMG GT3 [Review]

One of the LEGO Speed Champions cars released earlier this year that we overlooked — perhaps distracted by the truly awesome 2016 Ford GT & 1966 Ford GT40 (my favorite Speed Champions set yet) — was 75877 Mercedes-AMG GT3. Before we dig into reviews of the summer 2017 LEGO sets, let’s catch up with this speedy little roadster.

LEGO announces new McLaren 720S Speed Champions set [News]

This morning LEGO revealed another supercar entry to the popular Speed Champions line. The McLaren 720S (set 75880) will be joining the likes of the Ford GT, Bugatti Chiron, and more when it’s available this June. The bright orange car also includes a car designer minifigure and a design desk for sketching out the cars of the future. We don’t have word yet on the price or part count, but it’s a safe bet it will be priced at $14.99 USD like the other standalone Speed Champions.

LEGO Speed Champions 75878 Bugatti Chiron [Review]

For those of us who are fans of cars we’ll never own, the LEGO Speed Champions sets have provided a rather more affordable way to collect Ferraris, Porsches, McLarens, and more. Absent from LEGO’s eclectic mix of supercars has been the Bugatti. While the inimitable Veyron might have been more to the liking of many fans, Bugatti retired the Veyron toward the end of 2014, just before the release of the new LEGO Speed Champions line. Perhaps better late than never, its even faster successor the 75878 Bugatti Chiron was just released on LEGO.com, and should be available more widely on March 1st.

The LEGO Bugatti Chiron includes 183 parts and one minifigure for $14.99.

LEGO Speed Champions 2016 Ford GT & 1966 Ford GT40 [Review]

In both 1966 and 2016, Ford won the 24 Hours of Le Mans race, marking 50 years of victory for their GT supercars. 75881 2016 Ford GT & 1966 Ford GT40 brings together the iconic race cars on either end of that 50-year span.

2017 LEGO Speed Champions sets revealed, with 1966 Ford GT40, Bugatti Chiron, and more [News]

2017 still has many LEGO sets left to reveal, and today’s news brings us the next wave of LEGO Speed Champions, sure to whet the appetite of any good petrolhead (or gearhead, if you need to be all American about it).

LEGO teased racing fans with a press release a few weeks ago highlighting the upcoming 75881 Ford GT 2016 & Ford 1966 GT40, which celebrate 50 years of victory at Le Mans. Now we finally have a proper high-resolution photo of this set. Personally, my only disappointment is that there isn’t a GT40 in lovely blue and orange Gulf Gasoline livery.

LEGO, Ford announce new set celebrating 50 years of Le Mans victories [News]

LEGO and Ford have announced a new set in their ongoing partnership that celebrates Ford’s historic Le Mans victories. The first win came in 1966 with the iconic Ford GT40, as Ford’s cars swept the board with a 1-2-3 win and cemented the company’s place on the stage as a world-class racecar manufacturer. Exactly 50 years later the Ford GT, the descendant of the GT40, placed first in the GTE Pro class at Le Mans. The new LEGO Speed Champions set contains both the Ford GT40 and the Ford GT to celebrate these wins. The new set will be available March 1 for €34.99 (£29.99). Read the full press release below, and watch a video with the set’s designer.

LEGO Speed Champions 75875 Ford F-150 Raptor & Ford Model A Hot Rod [Review]

The entire Speed Champions line needs to work really hard to get my approval because I’ve been in, around, and under cars all my life. So it fell to me to review 75875 Ford F-150 Raptor & Ford Model A Hot Rod. This set, retailing for £39.99 / $49.99 / €49.99  is the second most expensive 2nd wave Speed Champions product after 75876 Porsche 919 Hybrid and 917K Pit Lane. Let’s see how it stacks up…

Super speedway is super exciting

Speed Champions is a relatively new theme to Lego, and while it has the backing of big car names like Porsche, Ferrari, and Ford, it has yet to gain much traction in fan community. Perhaps this is because there are nice cars but nowhere to go? Builder Brick Knight has built a large race track section for his Speed Champion collection, and in the process has suddenly made the theme far more interesting.

Featuring a pit lane, spectator stands, news crews, and a meticulously polished center field, this is one speedway bound to give everyone a fun day. Not only that, but the entire creation is jam packed with hilarious cameos …as if a high speed race wasn’t exciting enough already.
