Artistic classics are literally out of this world

It’s been almost two years since we first covered the work of Polish artists Przemek and Marcin Surma, who publish drawings every week inspired by classic LEGO sets. Since then, they’ve created a whole new bunch, based on iconic sets from classic space themes of the 70s, 80s and 90s. Classic space fans should have no trouble recognizing some of their favorites from among this collection (but the original set numbers are included in each drawing, if you need help remembering).

Back with a Vehemence

Chris Boen (Mos Doomsday) built this sharp space cruiser. The lines are reminiscent of a small fighter craft more than a monstrous capital SHIP, which makes this beauty stand out all the more. Chris says it’s his first go at a ship of this size, and it’s an excellent entry.

Fifty shades of grey

Monochromatic grey never looked as good as it does in this hangar scene by Jeremy Williams (Bricking It). The relatively plain color scheme is accentuated by fantastic lighting and some stellar color blocking; the yellow claw dangling from the ceiling is particularly eye-catching.

Mothership, Mothership, MOTHERSHIP!

June hopefully marks the arrival of 70816 Benny’s Spaceship, Spaceship, SPACESHIP!, which I guess marks LEGO’s first ‘official’ foray into the murky sub-culture of Neo Classic Space. To help you NCS fanatics get through these nail-bailing next few weeks, feast your eyes and saliva glands on this gloriously self-indulgent behemoth of an NCS ship by Michael Gale.

Built some years ago, shortly after Michael emerged his LEGO dark age, this monster is no mere sculpture – it has play features! Check ’em out…

As awesome as I’m sure it’s gonna be, I have a feeling Benny’s creation may need renaming Shuttlecraft, Shuttlecraft, SHUTTLECRAFT! in the light of Michael’s handiwork. I just wish I had a time machine so I could go back and show a picture of this to 12-year-old me and watch 12-year-old me’s HEAD EXPLODE.

Icy Room with a View

Welcome to the Planet of the Grapes

I honestly can’t say enough in praise for this creation by A Plastic Infinity (A Plastic Infinity). The purple alien landscape is lovely, and the lime acid fluid pops against it perfectly. The building has some cool little details, and the scene for an alien planet just works.

My only “complaint” is that I bought 8 cups of purple at the Lego store this weekend, with the intent of using it for an alien landscape, and now I’m late to the party!

Dark Wings, Dark Words

Aaron Dayman gives us a glimpse into the abyss with his wickedly asymmetric Doom Blade heavy assault fighter. While the overall shape is that of your standard starfighter, the details are where it counts and Aaron shakes it up in all the right ways.

Life on Pumpkonia

The look of the gas mining equipment and settlement drew me in to this display by Joshua Morris (I Scream Clone). The details, and interesting part usages (I’m digging the dome especially) kept me looking at it long enough to notice the figs. The jack-o-lantern people added a nice little twist that I had to share.

Hauling a million tons of toxic sludge in style

Maelven (Sydag) brings us this gorgeous vision of the future of shipping with the Brynhildr tanker. The clean lines and vivid colors make this industrial ship look as good as any luxury space-yacht. If this is the future of long-distance trucking, then sign me up.

Enter the marshy depths of Purity

This alien landscape of a cavernous marshland by Raoul Baldwin features many exotic elements. There are so many aspects of this creation I like, including the color texturing with olive green and dark tan, the vertical raised dark tan baseplate, the rocks in the foreground to add perspective and depth, and the integration of elements of technology and nature. Don’t forget to check out the details of the organic looking alien walker.

Alpha Bandit Kickstarter

The team behind the incredibly successful Mobile Frame Zero is at it again, this time bringing microscale battles into the void of space.

The original game spawned an entire subcommunity around the competing factions of mecha and has brought a number of new builders into the AFOL community through the fusion of Lego, wargaming, and the timeless appeal of giant robots smashing into each other.

Inside Look: The Cuusoo Exo Suit Project [News]

Tim Johnson over at the wonderful blog New Elementary has just published an interesting inside look at the development process of Peter Reid’s Classic Space Exo Suit Cuusoo set. Although the actual design of the suit has yet to be revealed, the logo for the new set has been announced. Reading Tim’s write-up of the extent to which fans have been involved in the development of this particular set has given me great hope that the outcome will live up to the fan community’s very high expectations. The fan involvement for this set reminds me a good deal of my time helping design the original Minecraft set, and it’s heartening to see another Cuusoo project take this route, instead of taking the project to Billund and developing it solely with official product designers, as has been the case with all of the other Cuusoo projects.
Combine the Exo Suit with the forthcoming Benny’s Spaceship Spaceship SPACESHIP set from the LEGO Movie, and it’s looking to be a very good year for Classic Space aficionados.
