SlyOwl combines a pair of dioramas to create one gorgeous scene:
The action doesn’t end at the waterline…
I’m particularly impressed with the tattered sail, the ruined LEGO architecture, and the unique merpeople.
…then you’ll no doubt like the Lair of the Bare-Chested Bandits by Philip Stark (Erdbeereis). This vignette depicts the crew of a strange band of pirates “known for their fondness for wearing nothing but skimpy trousers, exposing the thick, muscular and rather smelly flesh of their rugged torsos.” Join them and indulge in their merrymaking – if you’re the type.
I Scream Clone heads for the depths of the sea with this fantastic depiction of Davy Jones’ Locker from Pirates of the Caribbean.
The Kit Fisto minifig works very well for the nefarious Davy Jones himself, while Jones’ pipe organ is well-built indeed.
The action and buildings in SlyOwl‘s are expectedly excellent, but what impresses me most about this pirate diorama is the base:
The angled water with flotsam and jetsam in the foreground meshes neatly with the dock in the background. More photos in SlyOwl’s Tortuga gallery on Brickshelf.
Via those diligent TFOLs.
Ricardo Silva (evildead1980) has built an awesome little vignette with the new pirates. The use of flaming hair from the Agents sets as a cannonball is positively inspired. The long thin base is also a nice trick, it gives a nice sense of scale.
LEGO Pirates fan site ForbiddenCove.com has just announced the Whale of a Tale Contest. Build an outlandish tale on a base no more than 32×32 studs, though there’s no restriction in height.
You could win one of these 2009 LEGO Pirates sets:
Classic-Pirates.com is hosting a new contest that challenges you to build places and locations from the LEGO Pirates universe within a 24×24 base.
Here are the prizes:

TT Games‘ publisher Warner Brothers Interactive Entertainment just announced LEGO Battles for Nintendo DS. The game is due out this summer, and will apparently emphasize building in original themes over the movie-based and comic-inspired adventures of games like LEGO Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Batman.
Check out this graphic of LEGO Pirates in action:
The game will also feature LEGO Castle:
Though the press release didn’t include an image, the game will also allow players to build Space creations.
Here’s a bit more:
LEGO® Battles offers a new kind of “build and battle” LEGO gameplay. Through six distinct story lines, players build their own LEGO bases and battle teams as they engage in over 70 different levels, mixing and matching units to create the ultimate customized LEGO squad. These unique LEGO battles teams see pirate swordsmen fighting side-by-side with wizards and aliens; dragons battling ninjas; and pirate ships launching broadsides against spacecraft and knights! Players can also challenge friends on the battlefield in multiplayer mode through wireless DS multi-card play.
And in case you missed it farther down the page, TT Games is hiring!
Recently Lloyd Whittle has posted a series of small creations that all feature minifigures in interesting and creative positions, including a swashbuckling pirate:
Beach bullies (the girl’s legs inspired by a creation by Amanda Baldwin):
And a creepy pool scene:
Jordan Schwartz has gone to sea in a beautifully constructed Dutch whaler. This incredible ship is possibly the best ship I’ve ever seen. Those are some gorgeous lines.
Adrian Florea is quite the talented builder and his creations always have that little extra bit of flair. This one has more than a little bit. Keep your head down and watch out for those sharks!
Thanks to Bruce for reminding me of this one…
The first 2009 LEGO sets are starting to show up in the LEGO Shop online, starting with Pirates!
Behold 6243 Brickbeard’s Bounty. Yarrrrrrr!!!
Unlike the Pirates sets available in the US back in the 1990s, the cannons in these sets actually fire (and they’re a cool gun-metal gray).
The two “impulse purchase” sets look like a great way to build your army:
6242 Soldiers’ Fort reminds me a lot of 6277 Imperial Trading Post from 1992:
Here’s the full list of 2009 LEGO Pirates sets available so far (prices in USD):
A couple more sets, including 6242 Soldiers’ Fort and 6253 Shipwreck Hideout, haven’t been added to the site yet. We’ll keep you updated as the rest of the 2009 LEGO sets begin showing up in the LEGO Shop online.
The links will probably only work in the US and Canada. And yes, I’m aware that these have been available from a certain mega-store run by a giraffe for a while now.
