I may or may have mentioned it before, but I’m a bit of a sucker for a pretty ship. You can take the girl away from the sea, but you can’t take the sea away from the girl. (And, coincidentally, yesterday was the USS Constitution’s 214th birthday!)
But I digress. Luke Hutchinson‘s newly posted ship is just stunning. I love the lines of the hull, and the details. It’s always in the details.
A bit belated news for some, I realize — I’ve been sick — but 4184 Black Pearl is out now from multiple sources (text link goes to LEGO Shop; image link below goes to Amazon).
The highlight in this set for me is definitely the minifigs, with Davy Jones and the shark-headed Maccus. It goes for $100 (less at some big box stores at the moment) and includes 804 pieces.

I saw these minifigures this morning and was just…impressed. I LOVE the combinations TheBrickAvenger‘s got going on to represent pirates.
According to the description on the photo, these are contest entries for “A Pirate’s Life for Me” on LEGO Contest Network.

Brickshelf user T-Brick brings us this lovely replica of the Golden Hinde, the infamous ship of that gentleman-pirate, Sir Francis Drake. The real ship was used by Drake in his circumnavigation of the globe, one of the earliest such voyages, and only the second to be completed in a single ship. T-Brick’s version is particularly interesting, because he hasn’t used custom sails or rigging.
Carl Greatrix is a designer for the official Lego games, and his design of the Flying Dutchman for the Lego Pirates of the Caribbean video game shows why he’s the man for the job. Even though this is a render, just about all the parts used are official Lego elements.
Zach Milenius sets the world a blaze with with lovely cottage. I think that is the first time that I’ve ever said that a house on fire was lovely, but it is. The shape really appeals to me.
This sleek pirate starfighter is coming for you and yours. You’ve been warned. LegoDrome unleashed it. Blame him.
If any of you get that reference without looking it up, I’ll be shocked. Regardless, Chris Malloy considerably raised the bar in Forbidden Cove’s Seedpart challenge with this piratical sculpture. Chris is one of my favorite builders out there and he hit this one out of the park. Malloy definitely has skillz!
Adding a pirate flag to a big stompy mech just makes it that much more awesome, as Kyle Vrieze (bermudafreze) proves with this gun platform. The white on the legs, red missile tubes, and judicious use of stickers/decals all add little splashes of color.
As you may or may not realize, I’m a total sucker for a pretty tall ship. I suppose it comes with the territory of being raised around boats. Combine LEGO, a pretty ship, and a fabulous display, and it just makes my heart soar.
Luke Hutchinson (Derfel Cadarn)has posted his creation, the Princess Ceinwyn, which happens to combine the three aforementioned things. This is a lovely three-masted ship, and the presentation and base complete the look.

There are good builds and there is good presentation, but they don’t always go together. Chris Malloy has them both, no question about it. With this creation he takes us on a fascinating adventure across an infernal lake, aboard a gloriously improbable craft.
