Some say “Go big or go home!” but it takes real talent to compress something down to just a few studs and still keep it recognizable. Of course, many of the micro models we feature here aren’t so small after all, whether it’s a vast cityscape or starship.

Fantastic Aircraft Models by Sydag

I was looking through flickr user’s Sydag’s new aircraft models earlier, and was shocked to discover that we’ve never featured any of his stunning airplanes here before. Sydag has been building some of the best small aircraft to be found, including this latest pair of Hawker Sea Furies, decked out for the Reno Air Races. Be sure to check out the other photos of them, as Sydag’s included lots of terrific details like folding wings and a de-cowled version.

While I’d love to highlight all of his planes, this lovely version of Porco Rosso’s plane from Miyazaki’s film grabbed my attention in particular. It looks spot on, and the display is wonderful.

Kunde Naval Shipyards capital ship gantry by Pierre E Fieschi

Following his awe-inspiring Arc Hammer earlier this summer, Pierre E Fieschi has posted another massive, ground-based vehicle. Standing at over a meter tall, Pierre’s shipyard gantry has all the intricate detail of a Fieschi masterpiece, combined with a truly impressive size for a microscale LEGO model.

The model’s large photo is worth exploring. Can you spot the tiny LEGO man?

Catsy’s micro Halo Ringworld in LEGO is still 5 feet across!

We’re not even close to being done featuring all the awesome LEGO models debuted at BrickCon 2012 earlier this month. I had the privilege of hanging out with Catsy as he assembled his LEGO Halo ringworld for the first time right there at the con — it was simply too huge to fully assemble at home!

Nearly three years in the making, Catsy’s ring is built from more than 11,000 bricks and spans just under 5 feet. Catsy tells us that it’s 1,467 mm wide, to be precise.

The construction techniques Catsy used to build this took some serious engineering prowess. Here’s Catsy in his own words:

The outer ring (hull) consists of eight more or less identical segments (with minor variations in texture or the use of old gray for contrast), each 72 studs long. The inner ring (landscape) floats freely within the outer ring and stays in place purely by friction and tension.

The photo above shows off the overall detail really nicely, but I just love this next view.

Teensy NASA Space Shuttle blasts into my heart

Looking over their photostream, I think we’ve blogged everything Sean & Steph Mayo have built over the past several months, so why stop now? This is the smallest NASA Space shuttle built from LEGO that I’ve run across, but it may be my favorite.

The LEGO Castle helmet standing in for the top of the External Tank is pure genius.

What’s inside a LEGO brick?

According to flickr user Tikitikitembo, there’s a whole city in there. This awesome microscale municipality fits neatly into the bowels of a brick-built 2×4. The blue lining on the box is a touch that works magnificently, and there are lots of neat pieces in the structures, ranging from the super old-school to the brand new.

This charming castle by True Dimensions and his significant other is straight from the pages of Dr. Seuss’s fantastic book, Oh The Places You’ll Go! The elegant and smoothly curving build style fits with Seuss’s illustrations wonderfully, and the bright color palette really makes the model look like it’s from Seuss’s pages.

Mike Doyle, known for his decayed Victorian houses, launched a Kickstarter project to fund his next creation. For your support, Mike is offering framable prints of the finished creation along with actual brick-built details from the model.

Stake your claim on the Arc Hammer

If there’s ever such a thing as a SHIP on wheels, then this is it. Pierre E Fieschi spent the last six weeks constructing this Capital Planetary Deployment Unit for the colonization of distant worlds. Despite the unusual shape of this vehicle, it looks very functional from the right balance of details and distinctly colored components.

Ah, nostalgia!!! Tomy Turnin’ Turbo Dashboard in LEGO

Let us take a trip back to the early 80’s…to play with one of lil’ Tromas’ favourite toys…a Tomy Turnin’ Turbo Dashboard. Many an hour were spent zigzaging in and out of traffic and zooming down the highway.

When I saw tkh’s ~~microscale~~ mini representation all the happy memories came back :D

All the features are perfectly captured…and at this scale, that is quite the feat!

The Castle Amongst the Clouds

Carson Hart has churned out a brilliant microscale scene, packed full of nifty parts usages and cool shapes. He says he was inspired by Iridescent Nohow, and I can definitely see the influence in this whimsical diorama.

Entering the Gate

Simon Liu has been having some fun with blacklights and transparent LEGO pieces, and to great effect. This space portal glows ominously as it prepares to engulf a ship. This is different sort of example of what Andrew was talking about the other day with adding more variety and interest to models via means other than simply the construction itself. Here, for instance, the blacklight (and good photography to capture its effect) makes all the difference, taking this model up a huge notch.

Monument to the Hurricane Liger

I don’t know what the Hurricane Liger is, or why it deserves a monument, but I’m glad Cade Roster (Apocalust) gave it one.
