SO MUCH WINNING!!!!!!!

Here in the US, we are quite used to being the best at everything. Our job numbers look tremendous and our COVID numbers are tops in the world, way higher than Canada’s. With this much winning sometimes a fella just wants to shout it from the mountain tops (or another carefully chosen location). This is why we were moved to tears when Brothers Brick alumni Iain Heath created a LEGO version of one of our proudest moments. (No, seriously, I checked in with the other staff here at The Brothers Brick and we’re all pretty much in tears at the state of our winning.) It depicts our beloved presidential attorney and star of Borat: Subsequent Moviefilm bringing his -we’ll never give up, can-do attitude- to the Four Seasons in Philadelphia. Not the posh downtown hotel but rather The Four Seasons Total Landscaping establishment conveniently located between a crematorium and a sex shop. You know the place.

To be clear, this is not a real LEGO set. However, I’m certain we can use our power and influence to phone up LEGO or Rupert Murdoch or somebody to create a reality more in line with our own wants and needs. Iain is a true American patriot! But somehow he has a funny accent, like the kind you hear on one of those stuffier news stations. Maybe he was born while on vacation or something? Anyway, whether before, after, or during his tenure here at Brothers Brick, Iain is no stranger to our archives. He’s also quite used to getting his LEGO art out there and becoming a viral sensation. If it hasn’t happened already, I’m sure this newest piece will be covered on…wait for it…ALL THE NETWORKS! We’re thrilled with the amount of winning we’re doing around here. How about you?

You kids and your TikTok!

I fancy myself as too old and too unhip for TikTok. With that said, LEGO meme builder and Brothers Brick alumni Iain Heath is a few years older than me and probably already on the AARP mailing list. Yet somehow he has his middle-aged finger on the up-to-the-minute pulse of what the crazy kids are into on TikTok. You may have heard that the Tweeter in Chief nearly banned TikTok for new American subscribers as recently as last Sunday but apparently has since struck up a lucrative business deal that’ll maybe put the ban on hold and thus somehow TikTok is no longer a national threat. Thank giblets for progress, right? Thankfully Iain already has an account and can clue the rest of us in on what we’re missing. Presenting TikTok sensation Bella Poarch whose schtick is apparently making faces to the beat of Techno tunes. Check out Iain’s 10-second video to get in on all the fun. Your lives will most certainly be enriched.

The fifth horseman of the Apocalypse?

I’m usually sad when quality animated shows reach their end. And sadness is an emotion often associated with Bojack Horseman. That show covered some pretty important topics like depression and addiction and is generally regarded as one of the best television series from the 2010s. Sure, the show may be ending, but not everything has to be a downer. Iain Heath brings us a LEGO version of Bojack who’s every bit as charismatic as his animated counterpart.

It’s the subtle craftsmanship that won me over on this build. 1×1 bricks with Technic holes serve multiple uses, providing a good SNOT connection on Bojack’s nose and implying a camera on his phone. The arms are posed at interesting angles, and even his shoes are stand-out mini-builds. And, of course, the head is a study in creative slopes and tiling.

This Bojack isn’t a one-trick-pony, either. A quick rebuild of the eyes using headlight bricks and printed 1×1 round tiles gives Bojack an additional range of expression.

Maybe it’s just me, but he still looks kinda depressed. Oh well. At least that’s series-accurate.

Kane’s fateful first contact with a Xenomorph egg in Alien built from LEGO

Today marks the 40th anniversary of the theatrical release of Ridley Scott’s Alien — a ground-breaking sci-fi movie that has been giving film-goers nightmares the world over. This LEGO scene built by TBB’s own Iain Heath shows crewmember Kane making one of the most obvious blunders in movie history — discovering an entire room filled with egg-like shapes, and seeing one of those ominous shapes opening up like a death flower, decides to reach out to touch it.

Aggretsuko: Twenty five, single, Scorpio, blood type A

Say hello to Aggretsuko (アグレッシブ烈子), the latest character from the creators of Hello Kitty. By day, this red panda is a gentle and kind accountant, doing the best she can in a job she loathes. But by night, she blows off steam by shedding the cutesy look for that of a raging death-metal karaoke enthusiast!

Originally aired as a series of shorts on Japanese television, the adventures of Retsuko have finally arrived on Western shores in the form of a Netflix original series. Taking inspiration from this unexpectedly kawaii take on the modern condition, I decided to try and capture Retsuko’s struggle using LEGO bricks:

Come out, come out, wherever you are! [Instructions]

Even after six years, I still get requests for instructions to build the large Totoro that was part of my 2010 homage to the work of Japanese animator Hiyao Miyazaki. Sadly, that model is too large and complex to offer instructions, so instead here is a building guide for the medium Totoro that accompanied him. Of course, you don’t have to build him in the original medium blue; you can make him any color you like (or that your LEGO collection allows). I imagine this would make a lovely desk ornament for yourself, or gift for the anime-slash-LEGO fan in your life.
