Builder Aesstog mixes Bionicle, bricks, and textiles to create stunning Souls-like Knights and Nightmares

The dark fantasy aesthetic of games like Dark Souls, Elden Ring, and the Witcher have cast a huge shadow on the minifig community in recent years, but perhaps the most Souls-like character models I’ve ever seen are at constraction-scale. Noted knight enthusiast and “occasional moccist” Aesstog has been creating Bionicle-based characters inspired by FromSoftware’s aesthetics. The secret to their success? Textiles. Fur, fabric, and even knitwear serve a dual purpose, shrouding sharp angles with soft shapes, and providing a contrast that lets specific armor pieces pop. The effect is incredible. Just take a look at the builder’s latest creation, this Lycan Knight.

The Lycan Knight’s helmet comes from the shoulders of Tahu – Uniter of Fire and the head belongs to Panthar from the Chima buildable figure line. Of course it’s the fur, not an official LEGO element, that brings the character to life.

The dark fantasy worlds of FromSoftware’s games have been a huge influence for many AFOLs with their bold character designs, ornate gear, and haunting medieval settings. Builder panc4kez has been creating LEGO models inspired by From’s genre-defining Dark Souls, which perfectly translate the game’s aesthetics into brick form. After months of individual construction, Dark Sun Gwyndolin, The Nameless King, and Dragon Slayer Ornstein appear together in LEGO.

The black knight always triumphs!

“‘Tis but a scratch!” If I didn’t know any better, I would’ve thought W. Navarre built a large scale figure of that black knight. Yet, this formidable figure inspired by Dark Souls has no dismembered appendages at all and is actually threatening. While Navarre hasn’t shown the full figure yet, we see just enough. Leaning on his sword after a day of battle, the knight’s weary position conveys so much character. Navarre’s detailed build is not too cluttered, and we can easily tell what is what, and it works so well.

Ariandel inspired microscale church

I really enjoy it when a builder thinks outside the box. Nathan Hake shows us that he is very capable of doing so. For his micro-scale LEGO church, he used wheel cover with y shaped spikes for the main round window in the church tower. There are ice scates on the roof and the entrance is a plate with tooth which is brilliant in its simplicity. My guess is that this church is gothic inspired because it matches the 5 key architectural elements: large stained glass windows, pointed arches, ribbed vaults, flying buttresses, and ornate decoration. The ribbed vaults are a bit hard to spot from the outside, but we can all imagine them there, right?

Dare you face the giant lord in his Profaned Capital?

One of the more interesting video games in terms of story recently has been the Dark Souls series with its subtle lore. Revan New has created this visually impressive diorama of the Profaned Capital from Dark Souls 3 with hardly any description, save for it being inspired by said videogame. With imposing pillars and arches set in a rocky environment, this is definetely one of the most memorable areas of the game.
