We love builds with character! Creating characters from LEGO elements, whether traditional System bricks or using elements from Bionicle and Constraction themes, is an amazing way to showcase your building skills. Brining out emotion and personality in bricks is an art!

Their world is fire. And blood.

Eero Okkonen has done it again! Continuing in his distinctive building style and tendency to create fantastic teams of characters (for example, his prior teams from Pratchett’s Discworld or Miyazaki’s Nausicaa) Eero has assembled these lovely characters straight out of George Miller’s post apocalyptic future. Imperator Furiosa and Max Rockatansky look like they were cobbled together out of the scraps and hatred of the wasteland. Which, if you’ve seen the movie, is exactly as it should be.

A little monkey business at the spa

This fun build by LEGO7 depicts a comical scene of some Macaque monkeys chilling out at the spa. Interestingly, this is typical macaque behaviour as they are known for spa visits in real life. The monkey faces are perfect, especially the use of lever bases for the eyes.

They are definitely making the most of the dunking pool with some banana nibbles, a warm towel on the head and …actually I’m not sure if the light grey monkey is checking herself out in the mirror, about to shave her legs or texting on her iPhone…

The monkey in the background looks a bit suspicious. Is he keen to jump in too, or just checking out the ladies?

Being disintegrated makes me very angry, very angry indeed!

Over the years we’ve featured many LEGO versions of Looney Tunes characters such as Bugs Bunny, Yosemite Sam and Marvin the Martian. But this is the first time we’ve seen Duck Dodgers in the 24½th Century in brick form. Thanks to the talents of Tyler Clites we see him pictured here during his first screen appearance in 1953, battling for control of “Planet X” against Marvin:

Musical muppets keep on rockin’

Those hardcore rock music fans will have already recognised this famous band recreated in LEGO by Andreas Weissenburg. They’ve been rocking since 1975 and have played with some of the biggest names in music: Julie Andrews, Elton John, Liza Minelli, Paul Simon. Of course, we are talking about Dr Teeth and The Electric Mayhem, the house band from The Muppet Show.

Andreas has built the original five members of the band: Dr. Teeth on vocals and keyboards, Animal on drums, Floyd Pepper on bass guitar, Janice on guitar, and Zoot on saxophone. There are lots of nice touches used to bring these characters to life, and the wild colours of the muppet characters certainly help with part selection in this case. My favourite is definitely Zoot – that nose looks perfect in LEGO. Plus everybody knows that the guy playing sax is always a hottie!

The Goblin King: It’s only forever, not long at all

The latest creation by builder Centuri is Jareth the Goblin King from the fantasy movie Labyrinth. Labyrinth was released in 1986 but lives on with cult status amongst its fans. It tells the story of a selfish 16-year old girl who is given 13 hours to solve a labyrinth and rescue her baby brother when her wish for him to be taken away is granted by the Goblin King.

David Bowie played the part of the dangerous yet charismatic main antagonist. Centuri cleverly captures Bowies’ big 80s hair and quirky eye-shadow in this LEGO version. The Goblin King’s high collared, wide shouldered jacket is perfect and little details like the brass buckle help complete the look.

With the recent death of David Bowie, Labyrinth was shown in some cinemas in the UK to raise money for cancer research. In addition, it has been reported that Hollywood is planning a sequel, although in my eyes the role Jareth the Goblin King will always belong to Bowie.

What happens when Zeus gets into your LEGO

Dragons? Werewolves? Mermaids? Nope, the best mythological creature is obviously the minotaur (in my opinion, anyway). That may be why I had a soft spot for 70793 Skull Basher and why I love this “Cattle Devil” by LEGO 7.

Parts use is great here: constraction armour pieces used to represent exactly that, wing pieces for the skirt, the bucket handle for a bottom pair of teeth and a lot more.

For whom the bell trolls

Despite how well this creation by Takamichi Irie captures the essence of the ubiquitous and inexplicably enduring troll dolls, you might be inclined to dismiss it as just another nostalgia build. But hold onto your hats because, in a comeback that will probably put the Smurfs to shame, toshe loveably ugly “Gonks” are returning in 2016 with their very own animated movie! So get ready to see a lot, lot more of these frizzy haired critters on shelves later this year.

(Of course, we are secretly hoping this image will become the standard now when referring to “trolls” in the online LEGO community)

Reporting the news as the crow flies

Mike Dung has brought Aya Shameimaru from the Touhou Project to life in LEGO. Aya Shameimaru is a character who appears as a reporter in many of the games within the Touhou Project series. Aya covers the news in the fictional realm of Gensokyo and also belongs to the Crow Tengu species, giving her a height advantage when taking photographs. Mike manages to convey character details and also the fantastical nature of the game within his build.

I have to admit that I really like all the crows, Aya’s wings, the crow seen flying just below Aya, and the clever use of the black hotdog part to show a crow flying in the background. Forced perspective is utilised particularly well in the microscale Shinto shrine that appears to lie far below Aya as she enjoys her birds-eye view of the world. The overall feeling is one of movement, distance and height, something that is not easy to achieve within a small build.

As long as there are sovereign felines possessing great power, war is inevitable

And by the looks of it, these two heavily-armed hounds are ready to take down an entire battalion of fluffy foes. All kidding aside, if these dog warriors by LEGO 7 were sold as a Mixels-like series in stores, I’d scoop them into my shopping cart by the armfuls. Just look at them! I can’t get over the perfect floppiness of the terrier’s ears or the squat, powerful stance of the pug.

You are filled with determination (and spaghetti)

First it was Angry Birds, then Minecraft, then Five Nights at Freddy’s. Now the latest fad videogame phenomenon (if my teen’s current free time and fashion choices are any indication) appears to be the retro roleplaying runaway hit UNDERTALE. Such is the charm of this game, that even this old fart found himself playing …until I realized it had taken me a week to get just 5% of the way through!

Not surprisingly, LEGO versions of the game’s characters have started to appear online. I’ve picked out my favorites in the gallery below, and even created a LEGO Undertale Flickr group so we can all keep up with what I hope is gonna be a popular new building theme in 2016.

Steven Universe in brick form is a gem of a LEGO creation

Spawned from the loins of mold-breaking show Adventure Time, and apparently destined for a similar kind of cult following, Steven Universe is a critically acclaimed American animation about a boy and his troop of supernatural friends, the Crystal Gems. It’s on frequently in my house, although I’ll admit I haven’t been bitten by the bug yet. But Danish builder Ilia must have, judging by his superb sculpture of the show’s titular character:

Talent is an accident of genes, and a responsibility

…not the catchphrase of Dr. Lazarus, Hans Gruber, the Sheriff of Nottingham or Severus Snape, but words spoken by the singular actor with the nasal tone and sardonic expression who portrayed all of them over the course of his stellar 25 year movie career. Beloved British actor Alan Rickman passed away today at the age of 69 (strangely mirroring the very recent passing of British music icon David Bowie). Hong Kong builder Alanboar Cheung whipped together this quick tribute to one of the more recent – and arguably most popular – of Rickman’s characters, the complicated Professor of Potions from the Harry Potter film series.
