This wicked witch has her heart in the right place

Was Maleficent a misunderstood defender of the magical world or an unabashedly wicked always up to something bad? Kristel Whitaker shows that the iconic Disney villain is not that girl as the gravity-defying witch is taking part in LEGO’s Build to Give initiative by assembling a heart out of bricks. (Or maybe it’s just a ploy to be popular?) Even as Maleficent builds a heart, Kristel’s clever display is itself heart-shaped. Call me a sentimental man, but I find it charming.

Maleficent's Heart

Kristel built similar vignettes for fellow goth icons Wednesday and Noctura. It’s not too late to build and share your own heart as part of the Build to Give initiative. For every heart shared by December 31, LEGO will give a set to a child in need.

LEGO kicks off their Build to Give initiative for the 2024 holiday season [News]

First started in 2017, the Build to Give initiative is a yearly event put on by LEGO to help get our favorite building sets into the hands of the children who need them. This is done each year with the help of LEGO fans across the globe who use social media or shop in physical LEGO stores. Repeating the same goal as was used in 2023, every LEGO heart made in-store or shared on social media (or on the LEGO Play app) with the hashtag #BuildtoGive sends a LEGO set to children in need of play all around the world.

The donation process is done through a network of charities partnering with the LEGO Group this holiday season, which has resulted in helping more than 9.1 million kids over the last 7 years, and can help up to another 1.5 million in 2024. Here at TBB, we’ve got some ideas pumping with an appropriately-themed heart of our own. What kind of heart will you make for #BuildtoGive?

A build with heart, in more ways than one

We see all sorts of annual building challenges organised by the LEGO community, but right now there’s one being run by the LEGO Group themselves: the #BuildtoGive campaign. The task is to build a heart, tag it with the hashtag, and a LEGO set will be donated to children in need. It can be a simple build with bricks, or it can be as complex as this one by Maxx Davidson! Master Model Builder Maxx has gone to pains to create an anatomically correct human heart. You’ve got the arteries, and, uh… The ventricles, and… Who am I kidding, I’m no cardiologist. Still, I can tell it’s a stunning model for a good cause!

This little star loves playing with planets

Look at that little star! They’re so adorable when they’re that age, aren’t they? Esteemed LEGO builder Koen Zwanburg tells us that this little star enjoys playing with planets. Don’t we all? Gosh they start off as a cute little gas cloud then before you know it they’re expanding into a Red Giant consuming the planets around it into a fiery hellish doom, then they implode in on themselves into a cold White Dwarf or whatever. But that’s like…a long time from now. We’ll have plenty of time to admire its cuteness before we are all vaporized into oblivion. In the meantime, check out why we’re so intrigued by this builder’s stuff.

LEGO to donate one million LEGO sets through Build to Give campaign this holiday season [News]

LEGO has announced the return of the Build to Give campaign where the company donates one LEGO set per each holiday ornament built at an in-store display or posted online and tagged with #BuildToGive. Last year, LEGO donated 500,000 sets to children in hospitals, foster and child-care homes, and under-served communities as a result of the campaign.

This year, LEGO wants to double those numbers and will donate up to one million LEGO sets to children in need. The campaign runs from November 4 to December 8, including various in-store events and building challenges. The donated sets will be distributed by LEGO’s charity partners listed at LEGO.com/BuildToGive.
