Anime (アニメ in Japanese) is the style of animation or cartoons popularized in Japan, but appreciated worldwide today. Anime inspires lots of LEGO models from builders everywhere. Whether you love the artistry of Hayao Miyazaki or mecha from shows like Gundam and Evangelion, you’ll find many wonderful LEGO creations inspired by anime here on The Brothers Brick.

The New King of the Vignette Series?

A week or two ago, I posted about a small creation Ichigou made based on the long-running manga (Japanese comic book) series Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure.

Well, Ichigou has been posting vignette after vignette to a Brickshelf gallery (as featured on VignetteBricks). It’s almost like Ichigou wants to dethrone Izzo as the king of the vignette series! ;-)

Anyway, Ichigou has kindly posted snippets of the scenes he’s recreated as vignettes. Here are a few rough translations:

Demon, Part 3
“Hey! Polnareff! I’m gonna bite that bauble of yers right off!”

High Priestess, Part 3
“It’s, it’s a stand!”
“It, it was disguising itself as the seafloor! It’s, it’s huge!”

Anubis, Part 3
“It’s under your chin, Polnareff!”
“What?!”
“It’s me, you idiot — the reminder of Anubis’ stand.”

This manga has a complicated storyline and deep mythology that’s unlikely to be meaningful unless you’ve read it. For example, “stands” are “manifestation of an individual’s innate power over the ‘ripple’ and represent the individual’s psyche.” Huh? If you’re interested, Wikipedia has an excellent overview of the storyline, characters, and terminology.

Tank from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure by Ichigou

Ichigou has posted a small tank based on an enemy in the manga (Japanese comic book) and anime series JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure — 「ジョジョの奇妙な冒険」 in Japanese.

Laputa: Castle in the Sky Minifigs

My favorite anime director by far is Hayao Miyazaki. Although my favorite movie is Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind (「風の谷のナウシカ」), I’ve always enjoyed Laputa: Castle in the Sky (「天空の城ラピュタ」). With my increasing collection of US-released Miyazaki DVDs, I thought I’d try my hand at some minifigs.

“Kitarou” by mumu’s wife

In some families, the husband and wife build together. (Ahem! I said…) One such family is the mumu household. Mumu frequently posts creations by his wife, including several recent entries in the long-running shiritori word game.

Mumu’s wife’s most recent contribution is a group of three (four?) minifigs from the long-running Anime series Gegege no Kitarou. Sort of like the Japanese Scooby-Doo or an animated Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the series features a title character (Kitarou) who fights ghosts, monsters, and other nasties alongside his father, a disembodied human eye.

I like the tan hinge pieces as wooden sandals, the black turban as Kitarou’s hair, and the 1×1 white clip piece as tiny little feet on Medama Oyaji (“Pops the Eyeball”).

(I don’t actually know much about the show, since I wasn’t allowed to watch it growing up. Ghosts and monsters were just too close to the occult for my missionary parents.)

Nausicaa Creations by comic/Ichigou

I highlighted Brickshelf user comic’s Robonoid MOC a couple weeks ago, promising to post (must…resist…cross-linking!) about his Star Wars stop-motion movies. Before I had a chance to do so, he posted some really cool creations based on my favorite Hayao Miyazaki movie (and lengthy comic book saga), Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind.

First up, the fighter/gunship from the city of Pejite:

Admittedly, the gunship is dark red in the movie, but the shape is great! Nice use of the canopy from Anakin’s Jedi Starfighter.

Second, the powered glider Mehve that Nausicaa herself flies:

I like the little Ohmu in the fourth image in the gallery, as well as comic’s use of the submarine bubble as the Ohmu’s eye that Nausicaa gets from the forest. My only suggestion would be to use this torso for Nausicaa instead of the plain blue one. But maybe the plain blue works — I’ve never entirely liked the Nausicaa minifigs I’ve made myself…

Overall, great job!

Moko’s “Baikinman”

The popular Japanese cartoon “Anpanman” features a self-sacrificing superhero who has a head made of bread filled with bean jam. You with me so far? Anpanman fights starvation and hunger everywhere. His arch-nemesis is an evil space-germ named Baikinman (“baikin” means germ). Behold the animated GIF!

Moko has graced us with a version of Baikinman to rival all other LEGO space-germs:

Moko doesn’t seem to think much of this new creation, but I personally think it’s very accurate — and adorable! Now, let’s hope Moko makes our favorite edible superhero as well. Go Anpanman, go!

Robonoid by comic/Ichigou

Brickshelf user comic has posted a robot walker based on Hayao Miyazaki’s first film, Conan, the Boy of the Future:

Of course, Robonoid also looks a lot like “Steve” the ride-pod from Dark Cloud 2 for the PS2. I’d love to make a version of this that looks more like Steve and put an improved version of my Maximilian minifig in it.

Incidentally, “comic” also runs a blog called LEGO INC where (as “Ichigou”) he regularly posts stop-motion LEGO Star Wars movies. Cool stuff — and a blog I’ll be highlighting over on Pan-Pacific Bricks soon. ;-)

Baby Gundam by MOKO

This is the saddest, cutest little Gundam I have ever seen:

EDIT (11/1/05): Moko has titled this creation “Gundam without vigour.” I assume this is a translation of the Japanese “Genki　nai Gundam” (「元気ないガンダム」). The word “genki” can mean several things in Japanese, including “energy,” “spirit,” “health,” and “cheerfulness.” I think the last one is the most correct in this context, so “Depressed Gundam” or “Gundam with the Blues” is probably a more accurate translation. Hope that doesn’t sound too pedantic… I fault Moko’s dictionary. ;-)
