A Queen, Pharaoh in her own right

Hatshepsut, a women who held the position of Pharaoh in the 18th Dynasty, built a mortuary temple fit for any king. She took power at the sudden death of her husband, Thutmose II, and stepped into history. She assumed the role of Pharaoh and left her mark, which later was struck from the record like Akhenaten and Nefertiti some 200 years later.

Matija Grguric has brought her temple to life. Deir el-Bahari is in western Thebes, and was inspired by the funerary temple of Mentuhotep II. Hatshepsut herself was buried nearby in the Valley of the Kings, and believed to have been lost to the sands.

F-105D Thunderchief

It’s been a while since we’ve blogged one of Ralph Savelsberg’s (Mad physicist) LEGO planes but the wait has definitely been worth it. With his F-105D Thunderchief he’s combined three difficult colours (old dark grey, dark tan and dark green) to pull off a realistic camouflage pattern. And the quality certainly doesn’t stop at the camo.

Not the sleekest Greyhound

But a very, very, very cool one. I was previously unaware of this awesome half-up-top Scenicruiser but Henrik Hoexbroe seems to have done it perfect justice.

The Zumbi Rod

Calin (_Tiler) demonstrates that size is not required to make a sweet ride. The teensy beauty is based on misterzumbi’s ‘rod drawing.

Lego Minecraft Set 21102 Review

Here’s a video review of the newly released 21102 Minecraft set, the first CUUSOO product to be released outside of Japan. You can get it starting today for $34.99 on Lego Shop at Home.

Summary: the Minecraft set is a decent buy for a collection of small plates and tiles. It is more geared for display with its detailed texture and modular sections. Even though I am not a Minecraft player, I’m believe that Lego has succeeded in turning the game concept into a product (although my initial sentiments still stand).

Automated points switch

While the immediate use of Masao Hidaka‘s clever device may not be apparent to non train fan readers, I hope that the ingenious basic principles will be. Basically it’s an all mechanical, close to all ‘system’ system for changing which path a train will take, based on the position of the red dot. So much elegant engineering here and I hope it might inspire even better approaches to this and similar problems.

Bricks & Heroes at Memphis, Nov 9 -11

Camouflage is so ’10s. In the ’40s all urban assault vehicles will be colour coded. Just like Cole Blaq‘s BG Cyanid Unit. And who are you to argue with the future?

Action heroes

Some times all you need to turn an OK shot into a good shot is a little action. As Simon T. James aptly demonstrates with his TS4 Put Bull AUV. Of course it helps if the model itself is good.

An Exception to Every Rule

I try to avoid posting LEGO creations based on the Halo games; there are simply too many of them around, and I don’t really think anyone wants to see another attempt at a Warthog. This diorama by legomocs. forced my hand, though. The micro scale frigate is nicely rendered, as is the accompanying Covenant spire, but neither is what caught my attention. The shape of the diorama and the angle of the ship combine to give this creation a great sense of motion. It’s difficult not to imagine the continuing flight path of the frigate, after seeing this one moment caught in time.

On a Wing and Prayer

A wing, a prayer, and psionic energy are the only things keeping this glider by Jack McKeen (madLEGOman) aloft. Jack built this for a competition on FBTB, to be an aircraft themed to accompany the X-Men character Psylocke. I don’t know much about Psylocke, aside from seeing illustrations, but apparently she has psionic abilities. In keeping with her powers, the wings of the plane are attached by translucent beams of thought. They’re simply lovely to look at.
