A rat in a maze is free to go anywhere, as long as it stays inside the maze

To be fair, this maze does have an exit, assuming, of course, the rat (or minifig) can find it. Kevin Moyer took the simple LEGO building technique of pressing tiles in between the studs on a baseplate and created something quite extraordinary. The slightly rounded edges of the tiles make this microscale maze look ancient and worn down by time.

Of course, the best thing about this build is trying to solve the maze. See if you can find the path to the exit. But don’t start at the end like I always do, because that is cheating.

Lock n’ load for planet conquering

It took me some time to realize why this brilliant viper by Cole Blaq looks so scary, but I finally got it: it totally resembles one of those anglerfishes from the darkest depths of the ocean. Here are its big globe-shaped head and some huge sharp claws, but instead of a fleshy lure it has a couple of massive barrels on its back. I doubt this fighter brings anything but devastation, but at least it does it in a spectacular way for sure.

The fighter’s peculiar design is the result of an evolution through seven rounds of the Starfighter Telephone Game. The earlier ship by Pascal Schmidt gave Cole’s creation it bright color scheme, spherical cock-pit and four wings in an “X” shape.

The hills are alive...

…with the sound of sub-standard housing. According to the builder, simply bricking it, this LEGO model represents a favela, one of the core urban slums of Brazil, where the firetrap structures stack up the hillside like a precarious house of cards, ready to collapse at the mere mention of a disaster. But scratch your head: it also kinda looks like one of those central Italian castle towns, carved into the hillside centuries ago and still struggling to catch up with the times. And the University of Colorado in Boulder is well known for its cluster of red Spanish tile roofs. So is it a slum? Is it a castle town? Is it a prestigious campus nestled at the foot of the mountains? Or is it… a spaceship? Depends on who you ask!

If all I ever gave you was a hammer, every problem would be a nail

The quote above is from Arrival and it refers to the linguistic complications that can arise when trying to communicate with someone who speaks an unknown language. I won’t spoil the film by trying to explain what is happening, but I will say that this simple LEGO scene by Simon Liu perfectly captures the overall tone and eerie feeling of the movie. Even the floor has the perfect texture!

Robot dragon is all fire and death

Combining two of the coolest things in the world – dragons and robots – Dennis Qui brings us the mech dragon Shiryu. This absolutely massive build is filled with some great texturing throughout. The best part of the build must be the wings. Although they’re a very simplistic build, the shades of grey provided by aged and weathered LEGO pieces gives them a nice, natural look.

Going where Star Trek tends to go, into Space

The television series Star Trek: Deep Space 9 actually went where no Star Trek series had gone before – it was the first series that took place on a starbase rather than a starship. Clearly vehicles were still required as no one would want to be stuck on a starbase without the opportunity to encounter some new species or tackle some intergalactic crisis. Larsvader has built this huge minifig scale LEGO version of the USS Yukon (NCC-74602), which was a Danube-class runabout used extensively in the series.

The builder has managed to ensure that his Star Trek minifigure personnel are as comfortable as possible. The interior includes a large crew cabin complete with sleeping and dining areas for extended travel. There is also a compact personnel transporter to ensure there can be a dramatic transportation just in the nick of time. Of course the cockpit comes complete with beeping screen, tactical stations and an escape hatch. But where is the toilet?!

Fly the friendly space-lanes aboard the R-9A Arrowhead

LEGO Friends minidolls don’t often get to blast through outer space aboard sleek, heavily armed ships with massively overpowered engines, but MiniGray! has amended that oversight with the R-9A Arrowhead. Vaguely reminiscent of a Taiidan gunship from Homeworld, the ship is striking in white with spots of aqua and red with machinery details in gray and black.

Towards thee I roll, thou all-destroying but unconquering whale!

It’s been many years since I last attempted to conquer Herman Melville’s masterpiece Moby Dick, and it haunts me to this day. And when I spy that inscrutable thing again on a shelf, to the last page I shall grapple with it. Japanese builder aurore&aube (aurore&aube) has conquered the white whale in LEGO form, with Moby Dick ascending from the deep to harry Captain Ahab and the Pequod. Using wedges and curved slopes, the builder has captured the essential shape of the sperm whale, Physeter macrocephalus. The red interior of his open maw is a lovely touch.

Oddly perhaps, Moby Dick is a popular subject of LEGO models. Don’t miss Captain Ahab being dragged into the deep by Letranger Absurde and Ryan Rubino’s white whale battling a giant squid.

Winter comes for the Black Falcons

Temperatures are dropping in the northern hemisphere and winter approaches quickly. Gerard Joosten has helped the black falcons prepare with this lovely Winter Fortress. As a long-time Castle fan, I love the traditional Black Falcon colors which make it highly recognizable. The walls themselves manage to mostly avoid the “great grey wall” syndrome with nice texturing and architectural elements.

What I love the most, though, is this gorgeous Black Falcon mosaic decorating the back tower. The details are fantastic, and give a lot of character to the build.

First trailer for LEGO and Disney’s new Northern Lights Frozen spinoff [News]

Disney continues their very popular Frozen franchise, with a little help from LEGO. The newest addition to Elsa and Anna’s adventures with Northern Light premiers December 9, 2016 on the Disney Channel. Join Anna, Elsa, Kristoff, Olaf, and Sven as they try to save the Northern Lights. You can watch the trailer below, and don’t forget to also check out the new Disney Frozen LEGO sets.

The weather outside is frightful, but the microscale’s delightful

I don’t know about everywhere else, but this weekend saw winter begin to take hold in Scotland. Appropriately enough, along come two lovely little LEGO builds which perfectly capture the chill in the air. First up, IamKritch‘s cabin looks like a great place to sit out the blizzard. The trees and the frozen stream are smart, but it’s the simple use of a brown grille brick for the cabin’s log walls which grabs the attention.

And then there’s Brick Blue Wren‘s wonderful winter diorama. I like the variety of techniques used for the trees, and the curved backdrop and base evoking the shape of a snow globe. The color scheme properly pops off the page, particularly those hefty snowflakes against the blue sky. A few more models like this and I’ll be all set for Christmas.

Retro design for a futuristic fighter

NoVVember, the annual celebration of Vic Viper spaceships has already brought us a Viper from an imaginary next-gen LEGO Space theme. Not to be outdone, Pascal takes his Vic Viper in a distinctly old school direction with this Classic Space-inspired design.

I love the understated greeble details down the ship’s flanks and around the engines, and all the key Classic Space elements are present and correct — red and green trans plates, yellow and black stripes, and a nice trans-yellow cockpit. Although this is a Vic Viper, it wouldn’t have looked out of place in the official LEGO Space sets from the early-80s. And I mean that in a good way!
