This game is messed up

Video gaming has become so dominated by ‘shooters’ that Nintendo finally decided to get in on the action. But in a brilliant move they managed to create a family friendly one in the form of Splatoon – a new multiplayer team game for the Wii that takes the concept of paintball to a whole new level! I have a feeling this game is gonna be massive. Weapons master Nick Jensen was so impressed by it that he whipped up LEGO versions of a Splatoon character in both human and “Inkling” form.

Go to your room!

Portuguese builder César Soares has recreated his childhood bedroom, and along with it a kind of organized chaos that I’m sure all of us remember well (or as parents, are still dealing with on a daily basis). But far from being just a random collection of objects, there’s much attention to detail in the background of this scene too, from the furniture to the walls and even the floor.

The use of Modulex to represent LEGO bricks is a particularly clever touch. See if you can find anything in this scene that dates César’s childhood in the many wonderful closeup images.

The end of the road

This foreboding compound represents the end of the road in an enormous post-apocalyptic LEGO diorama created by Swedish LUG Swebrick for an exhibition they held last month. The full diorama is quite impressive, both in its scale and in its attention to detail …and also in the amount of dark tan used! Thanks to Jonas Wide and Christer Nyberg for the photos.

May you always make your saving throw

Dungeons and Dragons, the grand-pappy of role playing games, has endured decades of poor imitations, ill-conceived spin-off products, and even the arrival of the digital age. Yet today it remains a permanent fixture of popular culture, and the new 5th edition rules look to be the best version yet. Love him or hate him, most D&D fans will recognize Dungeon Master (aka “Red Yoda”) from the short-lived Dungeons and Dragons TV show, recreated here in all his super-patronizing glory by Chris van Vliet.

After dragging a bunch of kids into the D&D universe to do his dirty work, and providing cryptic clues in order to avoid being legally implicated, it turned out in the end that Dungeon Master could have returned them to Earth at any time. More like “puppet master”. What a git!

TBB cover photo: June 2015

This month’s winner of our informal TBB cover photo contest is this invigorating breakfast scene by Swedish builder LegoJalex. Yes, every single part of this scene (even the kitchen) is built from LEGO. And if you’re confused, that’s a popular brand of caviar paste on the toast. Just think of it as the Swedish equivalent of Vegemite!

Boy, oh boy

We’re very proud of our boy bands here in the West, with our One Direction and our Backstreet Boys and our Nickelback. But across the Pacific they’ve perfected the art to a whole other level. Here’s Jang Wooyoung from the band 2PM, LEGO-ized by our favorite Korean building collective OliveSeon:

Apart from the cute chibi-fication of the singer, and the fact that this thing was sculpted using the studs-up technique (which is pretty challenging for small character sculptures), I love the particular choice of costume here… It’s the one Wooyoung wore to promote his single ROSE, which actually featured him wearing a LEGO bow-tie. Bravo, sirs. I tip my hat to you! Even though I’m more of a BIGBANG guy myself…

Remember to vote, innit?

It’s election day! This Thursday, British voters will be exercising their democratic rights by rushing to the pub, then staggering to the polling stations, then (if memory serves) heading straight back to the pub.

So far this version of 10 Downing Street by Ben and Rachel Apps is the only remotely relevant MOC that I’ve been able to dredge up for the occasion. Personally I blame the British government …for not producing any political figures memorable enough to be worth modeling in LEGO!

Anyway, hope you all have a great election – if nothing else it’ll be good practice for when this happens all over again at Christmas.

It’s the wrong sheep, Gromit!

Fans of the Wallace and Gromit franchise will no doubt be familiar with Shaun the Sheep, the spin-off that spawned a spin-off and even a movie. Well now Palixa And The Bricks have recreated the show’s characters in LEGO – with great use of Bramsphere techniques to make the sheep suitably wooly.

Keep calm and use public transport ♚

Even something as iconic as the London double-decker bus must evolve. And since the privatization of its bus system, the British capital’s trademark buses have come to be represented predominantly by the Enviro 400, recreated skillfully here in LEGO by Hong Kong builder Andy Hung (complete with accurate interior):

What next, Beefeaters in baseball caps?! It’s a far cry from the LEGO’s official London bus set, which was released exactly forty years ago this year. (…omg, I actually remember owning this set)

We’re gonna need a bigger swat...

Proving that traditional stud-and-tube LEGO connections are sometimes old hat, the creature creations of Serbian builder Djordje are both studies in unusual building techniques, and examples of great character building. This latest one is appropriately named the Lord of the Flies:

If this guy ever needs backup, I think Djorde has him covered with earlier creations Sligmor the Backstabber and Hamrag the Stout (below). Check out the entire menagerie and pick your favorite!

The build of the century

Unless you happen to live here in Seattle, where we had a major cable TV outage last night – or you just happen to have something useful to do with your time, money and brain cells – then you might have watched last night’s stunt (sorry, “sporting event”) where two overpaid thugs (sorry, “athletes”) danced around the ring with no more incentive than who would go home with 60% rather than 40% of a staggering 9-digit prize pot. And now this truly historic event has been suitably ridiculed (sorry, “immortalized”) in LEGO by Swedish character building duo SuckMyBrick!
