Sunday Sci-Fi Roundup

Pop a top, my friend” and enjoy your visual buzz before yet another weekend slips by and it’s back to the spice mines of Kessel, smashed into…well…who know’s what? . Tonight’s topic is science fiction and it’s many splendid forms brought to you by builders who run the gamut from obscure to famous.

We begin our journey through the ABS cosmos with in the good ship U-740 from TBB regular F@bz.

U-740 (1)

Then we slip momentarily into digital space for a run-in with the Crusader DropShip by Blackout (Kylie).

Crusader DropShip.

Eventually we have to make planetfall to continue our explorations and we’ll be employing this trio of Alien Moonstalkers by onosendai2600.

So I heard you like Alien Moonstalkers?

Of course we’re bound to encounter some alien creatures along the way, like this Blue Bloodworm by A Plastic Infinity.

(Blue) Bloodworm

Even a weekend exploration of the Sci-Fi genre would not be complete without a model inspired by a film, and filling that role to perfection is the Elysium inspired ADS-64 JACKRABBIT by ∞CaptainInfinity∞.

Description

We might need something to step on that Blue Bloodworm so we’ll keep this untitled mecha handy from Freedom01.

Our journey has been arduous, and we find ourselves in rough shape and in desperate need of a little…enhancement, courtesy of spook and his League of Privateers “Iron Warmonger”.

League of Privateers "Iron Warmonger"

let’s end this thing with a bang from M.R. Yoder who didn’t stop building until he had an entire fleet.

88′ Seoul Olympic Stadium

The Games of the XXIV Olympiad were hosted in Seoul, South Korea from 17 September to 2 October back in 1988 and the principle stadium has been recreated in microscale by Yo-Sub Joo (ysomt). 8,391 athletes from 160 nations participated in the games and in case you’re wondering how the home team fared; South Korea took home a total of 33 medals including 12 gold!

In the bunker with Jerry.

Trench warfare is today’s topic in military history and our guest lecturer is BeLgIuM ww2 bUiLdeR, who has just posted a fine example of the genre entitled Red Tree bunker All the boilerplate is present and accounted for: radio room, racks, command and control center, searchlight and of course many weapons and soldiers. According to the builder, the bunker system is not modeled after any one specific location, but rather a representative sampling of many locations. My favorite detail is the decapitated tank turret re-purposed as an anti-tank gun emplacement.

Town Triumphant

South Korea’s Olive Seon, the reigning queen of Town diorama returns to the big blog with a double shot to get your weekend started in the right direction. Both of the following models are untitled and will be presented in a format preferred by the builder; light rock with less talk.

Friday Night Fights (Round 18)

Welcome back fight fans, to Sin City Nevada for another low-blow edition of Friday Night Fights! Tonight’s bout pits traditional vs. digital styles in an all out struggle for supremacy in the ring. Let’s go to the tale of the tape:

Fighting out of the red corner, from The City of Roses…Nathan “The Knife” DeCastro (nate_decastro) and his XV-1011 EL-AHRAIRAH.

XV-1011 EL-AHRAIRAH

And fighting out of the blue corner, from somewhere deep inside the MCP cone, Jackhammer-joeluk66 and his Anubis.

Anubis -4-1

As usual, constant reader, you are tasked with deciding the outcome of this pugilistic endeavor by way of comment. On the last edition of Friday Night Fights, Iron Builder Rematch, FNF history was made as the judges called the bout a draw. Maybe a highly acclaimed panel of turbo-nerds really is the best way to decide The Iron Builder, or maybe this was the closest IB competition to date. Tune in next week for another action packed edition of Friday Night Fights!

Sunday VTOL Roundup

Constant reader, the staff of TBB understands that you crave VTOL conveyances of all shapes and sizes, but you don’t have the time to scour the wretched corners of the internet to find them. With that in mind, please enjoy whatever is left of your Sunday night and allow your spirits to be lifted…vertically…by this crop of talented builders.

Let’s begin with the OspreyDrone 2063 by Cam M.

We’ll stay in the same general neighborhood with the W-09 Wasp by Anto-Nio.

Minifig 6-pack

It is time to celebrate the minifig-driven heritage of this august blog with a 6-pack of little people. Purists beware; you have just gone through…the scary door

First up is Madame man-hands, or as she is more properly known, The Iron Lady by Hammerstein NWC.

The Iron Lady

Next up is the always reliable delgax and his spooky “The Administrator“.

The Administrator

I’m not sure if “Crysis Nanosuit” even qualifies as a minifig anymore but I admire the amount of time and care that Geoshift put into its design.

Shingeki No Kyojin ( Attack Of Titan ) – Eren Yeager” by Nathaniel Ng features a snazzy coat and futuristic floatation device?

And completing our 6 pack is Curzon79 and his “Boxer“.

Now with 10% more cleaning action!

This is without a doubt, the most realistic model of a laundry detergent box that I’ve ever seen. I’m sure that if you put this box of Tide on the shelf of any major supermarket chain it would be bought up by some world-weary hausfrau. The responsible party is TBB rookie David Haliski (theworldinbrick), who seems to specialize in pop-art.

The Enduring Skyhawk

Measured by its longevity and popularity, the Cessna 172 Skyhawk is the most successful mass-produced light aircraft in history. The 1960 model 172a faithfully reproduced here by Jes Bert introduced a swept back tail and rudder as well as float fittings to the design, the price was US $9,450.

cessna 172 a

In brushing up on my Cessna 172 lore for this posting I was reminded that on May 28, 1987, a rented Cessna 172 was used by German teenage pilot Mathias Rust to fly an unauthorized flight from Helsinki-Malmi Airport through Soviet airspace to land near Red Square in Moscow, all without being intercepted by Soviet air defense. Who says teenagers aren’t motivated?

“When you’re racing, it’s life. Anything that happens before or after is just waiting.”

I think this is the first appearance by Lego Builders on the Brothership, but the screen name defies and befuddles our humble search engine so let us proceed as if he’s a new guy and act accordingly. Feast your eyes on this automotive eye-candy, the Toyota TSO30 with photography good enough to grace the covers of those slick dealership brochures. The rear engine cover of this Le Mans racer opens to reveal an engine that, in the builders own words “is completely made up”. For some reason, that admission makes the model all the more awesome.

Cincinnati Music Hall

Builder Mark Clark let us know via Facebook that he recently displayed his model of National Historic Landmark Cincinnati Music Hall in the venue itself to the delight of its many visitors. The model was constructed to appear as it existed in 1896, in 1/50th scale, with an interior that includes the acoustically acclaimed Springer Auditorium and Corbett tower.

Like many builders who attempt a project of this scale, Mark indicated on one of his photos that it wouldn’t have been possible without the support of his family. Kudos Mark, for a an accurate tribute to a fascinating structure.

VEM1200 GS搭載艇

Our next featured model comes from legorobo:waka, a builder who has been blogged 8 times by 7 different Brothers this year alone. My addition to the bandwagon legorobo:waka’s fantastic anime-inspired drop-ship posted a few weeks ago called the VEM1200 GS搭載艇, which can transport 5 mecha to far flung battlefields or even your home prefecture, if necessary.

GS-00

The model was on display at a recent fan gathering in Nagoya Japan on August 17. I don’t have much in the way of detail on the event (I wasn’t able to contact the builder), but maybe one of our constant readers can offer some insight. As one might expect the mecha display looks like it was mind-blowing.
