About Dan

Dan Rubin has been an AFOL (Adult Fan of LEGO) since he became an adult. He joined the larger AFOL community on LUGNET in 2003, and that was also the year in which he attended his first BrickFest. Dan largely builds space MOCs, so it should come as no surprise that he is also the Main Admin of the forums at Classic-Space.com. He is also the creator of the Galactic Inquisition space theme. The colours children!

Fredoichi‘s new creation has me Frinking out all right. I love the color combination in this ship. I’ve used orange, brown and a light blue together before, but I would never have thought that you could add dark tan and still end up with something that looks good.

The shape of this thing isn’t half bad either. I’ve long been a fan of armored panels over greebly bits, so this should come as no surprise. Add in some top notch sticker usage, and the result is the quite excellent Damare v3 Fighter.

Peter Reid’s Classic Exo-Suit Upgrades

Peter Reid has taken another run at his classic exo-suit creation. He’s just posted some photos of the MkII version on flickr, and the model just looks great. I think that the new claws are a huge step forward, and not just because they’re huge.

Also notable is the photography of this model, which does a great job of highlighting the model, while giving it a believable setting. The backdrop and supporting cast are great, and the depth of field of the photo really brings it to life.

Exo-Suit (MkII)

Let’s take a look at the evolution of Peter’s Exo Mech over the years — it’s pretty cool to see all these iterations. This is an earlier version of the Exo-Suit from 2009, with an extended limb from the back.

Contus Lancer Corvette

As I said in my last post, I’m using today’s snow day to build and search for creations to blog. I didn’t find too much stuff to blog that hadn’t already been covered by my Brothers-Brick cohorts, but I’m hopeful that the snow on the East coast of the US will force a building boom. And so, I give you the Contus Lancer Corvette, which I’m still not sure if I like.

This ship is meant to be a long-range attack craft. It’s armed with a single, massive, spinal mounted energy cannon, for attacking capital ships, and bunch of crazy-spindly sensors. For most of this build, I thought it was going to end up being unmanned, because I didn’t think I’d have room for a cockpit. Eventually it dawned on me that my idea for the front section could easily be hollow, and now there’s a pilot.

Blood in the Snow

Carter Baldwin posted a creation a few days ago that’s feeling pretty relevant to me right now. Here in DC, we’re expecting a snowfall of up to two feet.

While stuck inside, I’ve been splitting my time between building, and looking for things to blog here. Carter’s creation hit just the right cord for me. The fact that it’s well built helps too. This is a great looking cliff face, and the icicles (using some sort of aftermarket part) are a very nice touch.

They call it Tan Fantasy

When I started building this stuff, I wasn’t sure what to call it. It’s certainly flattering to see other people build in this style, though, especially when the creations are as good as this one.

The Cortical Assimilator by Lloyd W looks pretty amazing. He’s managed to cram a ton of details into a very small package. He’s also done some sort of trick lighting or photography to get all his new gray pieces to look like old gray. He’s certainly outdone my latest in density of detail.

V-22 Phoenix

I’ve been a fan of sk-fi since the Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe game on the PC in the 90s. The genre seems to have its ups and downs within the LEGO building community. Fortunately, even when it’s not a popular thing to build, there are still gems to be found.

This new plane by Jon Hall suits me just fine. It looks just like it was envisioned as the future of aircraft by an artist in the 1940s. He’s also made fantastic use of the new clear dome piece for part of a canopy, even though I’m sure it barely stays in place.

Cute But Tough

There’s something quite compelling to me about this little mecha by _Nash. It somehow manages to look adorable and armored at the same time.

The shield on the shoulder is a great touch. I’m a big fan of yellow and dark gray together, too. If you get a chance, make sure to check out the power unit on the backside.

LL-215 AKA More Chunky Goodness

Maybe I’m stuck in a rut, or maybe I’m subconciously trying to tell myself what to build next. Whatever the reason, I seem to be into chunky Neo Classic Space creations lately.

Take this ship by Uspez Morbo. Once again, I like the chunky style of the ship. The slight element of assymetry added by the gun is also a nice touch.

Getting down to finer details, I’m a big fan of the use of arches to create negative space in the wings. This is further set off by the use of wings from the old UFO sets, lending a bit of a gothic feel. Of course, having used a similar canopy arrangement myself, I have to be a fan of the cockpit. Also, make sure to check out the fantastic use of 1×1 bricks on the edges of the wings, to add texture.

Vazor Swarmer

It’s always nice to see a space creation that’s meant to be alien, like this one by Kyle Slushey (The Slushey One). I like all of the spines and angled.

Is it flower inspired? Bunny? I don’t know, and that helps sell it as extra-terrestrial.

Nampa Class Starfighter

It’s been awhile since I’ve covered any Neo Classic Space creations, but the theme still seems to be going strong. Take this new entry by Brian Harvey (fivebonez), it’s a great take on the theme.

Although the chunky style may not be entirely traditional for the theme, it works really well on this ship. I think that part of the appeal is that it’s not just chunky in spots, but there are chunks on top of chunks, in a pervasive style. It’s a big block of ugly, and I love it.

Stefan Hunts Dragons

Stefan (– 2×4 –) has built a fun little diorama of a heroic dragon hunter, on what is probably his last hunt. I love the sense of motion this scene evokes, with both the “dragon” and hunter poised in mid-air.

As Arthur C Clarke said, “any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.”
