About Gambort

I'm a builder with a short attention span and a lot of virtual bricks. I'm probably most known as a train builder and was involved in the creation of LEGO set 10183 but I do a lot of other stuff too. I'm also a member of the LDraw SteerCo and a webmaster for the site.

It’s just the freakiest show

Those of use with a love of pulp science fiction know exactly how the Solar System should have been. It should have been filled with strange aliens, unique animals, forests and rivers.

To remedy this Soren Roberts has ensured we can populate our LEGO universe with weird and wonderful intra-system aliens. My favourite is the Martian (more later) but they’re all terribly cute.

Having seen the Martian I couldn’t escape the thought that he desperately needed a pseudoyak and cart. My heavily overtired brain took surprisingly little time to come up with this little diorama. That’s every sand-red piece I own right there.

Tie me kangaroo down, sport

It’s been a while since I built a mecha and it was jolly good fun to get back to joints and posing. Out of all themes I think that mecha tends to have the most post-build appeal.

Hits of the 80s

Here’s a couple for the oldies…

Hearkening back to the good ‘ol days of Classic Space, Pete Reid (legoloverman) presents LL-612, his excellent, modern take on a theme that many of us loved.

And heading forward a few years I give us a modernised take on the robots and buggies common to Futuron.

A great debut

David Paul presents us with his debut LEGO model, the Short Range Striker. His collection consists of “a Jedi Starfighter set… a Mindscapes R2D2, Mars Mission Recon Dropship, Y-Wing, and the Ferrari” yet he manages to put those limited parts to great use with this model. Truly an inspiration to anyone just starting out.

Steamy scenes

German builder Michael (Monteur) presents an amazing coalbase for refuelling his equally amazing steam trains. The coal is a simple yet effective technique and the model uses all sorts of cleverness to pack in the details. The selective use of studs is particularly refreshing.

Parrotted design

A new dogfighter from me. I’ve heavily copied Adrian Florea‘s style here in order to practise new techniques and shapes. The dark tan and orange combination was a lucky find.

Sugar Mountain

Fellow Brisbanite Fedde (Cthulu) takes some Fabuland, a sugar pill and follows it with some pure sucrose. The result is delightful.

Ride the Helix

Ed Diment presents the round, proud and crazy Helios. I’ll use Ed’s words here “The Helions use spacecraft that resemble the Sun (theyr’e not very original like that!). This the Helios class scouting vessel, the fact that one of these has been sighted over earth can only mean an invasion of other Helions. Beware! “. Deep, man!

KunstHausWhat?!!!!

The ever excellent Esben Kolind of Danish LUG, Byggepladen (baseplate for a random fact of the day) presents an amazing brick rendition of Hundertwasser‘s KunstHausWien in Vienna, Austria. The building techniques used on this model really bring the complex shapes of the original to life and it seems that no detail is left ignored.

Not exactly basic town

I seem to be at it again with the early posting but… this “work-in-progress” town by Brickshelf user `Basic’ (who I assume is from Lundfrom Nottingham, England) is simply amazing and needs posting now. I’ve got far too little time to go describing all the details I like but the illusory tram track stand out as worth of comment.

Free as a Bird

If you keep an eye on my Flickr ‘stream you might have noticed a couple of work-in-progress shots appearing lately. It’s rare that I’ll do more than one but sometimes I like getting advice along the way. Anyway my model of a Rooivalk (“Red Kestrel”) is now done and I’m pretty happy with how it turned out so thanks for the advice to those who gave it. I’m wondering if this is the first time the SAAF has appeared in brick.

Cave racing, across the universe

As has been previously blogged here I made a cave racer and asked Jas Nagra to make a variant. As a few people expressed interest in doing their own I posted a couple more and marked the blue one with the design criterion. Well it is now developing into a little league with various racers popping up so I created a flickr group to collect the racers.

EDIT: Some clearer guidelines
