The “Trash Doves” sticker set is a strange phenomenon that erupted across Facebook quite suddenly as a meme during the week of Valentines Day, starting in Thailand and soon spreading across the globe. In Thailand ‘nok’ is the word for “bird” – and is supposedly also associated with unrequited love. And now it has been transposed into brick form thanks to Wen Yeh Ng. I’m still perplexed by all this, so I’m not going to try to figure it out; I’ll just wait for the next one to come along and bewilder me!

Being stomped on every day is the life of a Goomba
In 1985, when Super Mario Bros was all the rage, the very first enemy that approached Mario was Goomba. To this date, the fate of a Goomba has been to be stomped on again and again, for eternity. The Goomba that Cecile Fritzvold crafted is an evolution over the years, where a set of reverse fangs were introduced to give it a more menacing look for a baddie in the game. No game is complete without the Question Block, which only leaves me wondering, I’ve yet to see a decent Mario built with bricks in a long while… anyone up for the challenge?
Owning a supercar is now affordable – if you can’t buy it, just build it
There are some things money can’t buy, and this Italian supercar is one of those. The Lamborghini Centenario had a run of just 40 units worldwide, and they’ve all been snapped up. But that doesn’t stop any of us owning one in brick form, provided we have skills like Ryan Link. Accurately built and featuring a removable engine block, petrol heads of any age can swoosh this version around and still have a couple million dollars in the bank.
Are mermaids fish, mammals, or amphibians?
Not long ago YOS Lego introduced us to LEGO versions of our favourite sisters from Frozen, and we were all wondering if they had had too much of a fright or too many energy drinks with those wide eyed expressions! And now apparently Ariel the Little Mermaid seems to have consumed the same concoction. Aside from their wide eyed expressions, which do play well to capture a strange emotion, these builds of Ariel and her alternate human form are a delight for their details and proportions. The brick layering techniques used here bring out the best highlights of Ariel’s signature red hair.
All you need is love (and a few LEGO bricks)
This Beatles tribute by Singaporean builder Tan Kok Mun features the Fab Four in a colorful and imaginative collage featuring several key themes that the legendary band was known for during its heyday. The symbols of peace and flowers asre universal, with a guitar and musical notes floating to the echo of the familiar music that plays in our minds. With the added touch of a heart over the guitar’s sound hole and the headstock playfully replaced with a tiny yellow submarine, what’s not to love about this charming tribute?
I am not an AI, I am a living thinking entity
Major Motoko Kusanagi is a cybernetic human employed in law-enforcement in the Japanese manga, anime, and forthcoming Hollywood blockbuster, Ghost in the Shell — 50% cyborg-intelligence, 50% human, 100% LEGO. Builder Grant Masters uses an old Belville figure with coat of paint to show how the protagonist hooks up to a network of systems. The twisted tubing provides a suitably cyberpunk backdrop to the scene, and it’s all enhanced with some nice uplighting.
Death to the brick mice – lure them out with cheese slopes
Immersing a LEGO model in a real-world scene is quite a feat. Did Chris Madison really make a mouse hole in his wall skirting? Such dedication. Of course, a closer look reveals it’s all built with bricks. A brilliant set-up, and the perfect use of the piece LEGO fans dub the “cheese slope”!
Savoury, delicious and mouth-watering bricks
Just looking at Jared Chan’s latest build makes me hungry and craving for something ever-so-sweet. I spy with my little eye a tuna sandwich, cheese bites, chocolate mousse cake, and fruit tarts. The set-up of this afternoon spread is even more pleasing with the addition of some very cleverly constructed cups of tea. I’ll let you enjoy staring at all this while I’m off making my High Tea reservations!
One small build for a man, one giant leap for LEGO fan-kind
It is said that you can give anyone a canvas and a brush but only an artist can make it come alive. Same goes for LEGO bricks; you can take a bunch of bricks and put them together, but it takes true creativity to bring those bricks to life. Master artist Chris Maddison does it ever so elegantly and skillfully with only a single color, re-creating man’s first footstep on the moon. It’s so iconic and recognisable that it doesn’t even really need any introduction. It’s really a lesson and inspiration for builders in capturing the simple essence of the subject.
Robin finally gets some cool wheels
In every aspect of the partnership between the Dark Knight and the Boy Wonder, it’s always Batman who has stolen the limelight. I’ve even felt that the recent LEGO Batman Movie reinforces this pattern, one that spans the entire 76 year franchise. Robin warrants a bit more visibility of his own, and these LEGO builds are the exactly what’s been long overdue. Elvis Lawrey builds not 1 but 6 vehicles that are well deserved by Robin, all in a predictable but appropriate red and black color scheme. My favourite has got to be the menacing tank. What’s yours? Start getting emotional with the Inside Out family
With LEGO’s introduction of BrickHeadz, we’re starting to see fan builders apply their creativity to featuring their favourite characters in this new form. Mark Gotidoc captures the essence of these five Pixar characters’ emotions cleverly with just the right tones and elements, but with one difference from LEGO sets: no printed body parts. The only parts which are printed are the eyes, which truly convey the expressions of each individual. The rest are cleverly fashioned in minimal parts but with maximum effect.
I particularly like how some of the fists are fashioned with “lamp holder” pieces, instead of the expected plate holders (which to me look like hooks more than anything else).
A shadowy flight into the dangerous world of a man who does not exist
There are few things that stand the test of time and still find relevance in pop culture. K.I.T.T, short for Knight Industries Two Thousand, is the talking trans-am that captured the TV dreams of many an 80’s kid, including builder Rob Damiano. While the character of Michael Knight was the official hero of this show, it always seemed to be K.I.T.T. that saved the day by coming to his rescue or using some new technological trick. Rob has recreated the four-wheeled star of Knight Rider at a scale that perfectly matches the LEGO Dimensions David Hasselhoff minifigure, and presented it in a style that looks lifted straight from the show:
