Hippie-er times on the Volkswagen Combi

There’s something very appealing about the nostalgic past of the Volkswagen T1 campers. The LEGO VW Camper 10220 remains a favourite with fans, as evidenced by the fact that it’s been in production since 2011. At a smaller scale, though, this fan-made version by mzxgod does a great job at roughly minifigure scale. The model looks great with the stickered VW logo from the big set and a wedge plate to achieve the “V” signature look. Want to go one size further down? Bunny-bot out to do some damage

While this almost bunny-mecha looking contraption looks pretty cute, take a moment and do give it some thought. Why would a bunny minifigure need a mechanical bot such as this? The only reason I can think of is to get some damage done! With those huge feet, I’m sure a stomp or two would take any other enemy minifigure out flat. Just a reminder from IamKritch that all things cute are not what they seem, perhaps… Bring out the weapons, I say!

Brick protector of the Earth Federation

Mecha builder Sam Cheng amazed us with his trio of Autobot Transformers, and he’s back again with another classic all-time favorite, the RX-78-2 Gundam. At an estimated 700 piece build weighing in at 0.66 pounds, Sam spent a period of 3 weeks with some amount of interruptions to build this detailed brick mecha including a good deal of time ensuring that he could capture a number of signature poses.

Dynamic Duo scaling old heights

Some things in pop culture are so iconic as to be forever ingrained in the collective memory. Builder Martin Redfern brings us a dose of instantly recognizable brick-built nostalgia with the wall-climbing dynamic duo from the 60’s TV Series. While the “na na na na na na na… Batman!!!” themed earworm starts to play in your head, you can almost hear the Boy Wonder whine “Holy predictable moves, Batman! Could we start working on a flight contraption? Let’s call it the Bat Wing perhaps?”

Loaf at first sight

Finnish builder Eero Okkonen is known for his excellent character builds, and his last one stunned us all with an eerily perfect Admiral Ackbar. The character he brings to life in his latest work is Mistral Nereis, the pirate gal from the baking-saturated anime adaptation of PSP SEGA game Shining Hearts.

The details included and techniques used to recreate not only the pose but also bring out the key features of this lovely character are stunning—for instance, the multi-layering and natural flow of her skirt. You can read all about how this build came together on Eero’s blog.

Time to cuddle up with a good brick

The 101 of making all things cute: stubby limbs, round tummy, huge eyes! If you ever need something huggable, cute and irresistible then stick to these basic rules and you’ll have a winner. Builder Swan Dutchman is on a roll with a series of adorable “cuddly toy” style wildlife creatures made from LEGO that will surely tug your heartstrings. If I had to pick a favourite, it’s got to be that tiger, which reminds me of Tigger from Winnie the Pooh. LEGO element nerds will find it amusing how those whiskers were repurposed from minifigure Wolverine’s claws.

Singapore skyline faithfully represented in LEGO bricks

Through decades of planning and cultivation, Singapore has earned the name of a “Garden City”. Within 277 square miles a population of 5.7 million resides, one of the top 3 major global financial centers. Singaporean local Gavin Foo showcases the core of this economic hub with a skyline built entirely from LEGO bricks. This jungle of towering concrete structures hosts the banking and finance industry, whilst along the Singapore river is the place to head for a cold beer at the end of a hard day’s work.

The Dark Knight, the hero that LEGO deserves

Character builds are one of the hardest to accomplish with bricks and it’s likely the reason you don’t see Billund doing much of these aside from the Constraction series. Builder Roy of Floremheim
does a pretty cool Batman with the parts at his disposal and with clever use of elements. While you’ve got to love that 6-pack, my favourite use of parts are the reversed Minifiigure flippers representing the bat insignia.

Bitten by the bug building bug

While I have no fear of ants in general, this one scares me to bits becomes of its huge size! I’m not sure what Leonid An was thinking when building this monstrosity. Like me, I bet many of you right now are instinctively reaching out for a rolled up newspaper or a boot to stomp this bug. Nevertheless, I can’t wait to see if the builder churns out more of these realistic looking creepy crawlies.

Is this where Groot grew up?

A magical place is how Jonas Kramm describes this serene little home tucked under a tree. What’s interesting is how there’s a particular element that belongs to the LEGO Duplo family that’s part of this build. If you’ve not spotted it yet, it’s the green grass element that forms the roof of the home. I wonder what beings live in this fairy tale wonderland — earth fairies, or ground trolls, or was it the home of Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy? I’ve got my eyes on that hole in the tree trunk, just waiting to see what pops out of the curious-looking land.

Look ma! LEGO made us a transformer!

Builder Serge S really really gets his money’s worth out of the LEGO sets he buys — especially the 10242 Mini Cooper . Last year he shared his alternate builds of the set that produced an elegant sports car and a monster of a truck, all from the very same set. This year he’s back with the same pieces to share with us a slick-looking two-propeller monoplane that includes a base stand. If there’s one thing I can learn from Serge, it’s that creativity gives birth from constraints, and perhaps all of us should whip out our older sets and give alternate builds a go!

Where’s my pot of hunny?

I have to admit, when I first saw LEGO’s new BrickHeadz, I wasn’t so sure of it being a loveable theme. But once again the LEGO fan community has proven me wrong. How could you say no to these bright and colorful Winnie The Pooh characters by builder Bob Chai. He even extends this lovely build to include a themed base that spells out “POOH”. While the Pooh has a cute extended tummy, what tickles me is how Tigger is balancing on his signature tail bounce!
