Lego Star Wars Coruscant Police Gunship 75046 [Review]

Lego Star Wars Coruscant Police Gunship is one of the new Star Wars sets released in March 2014. This set retails for $49.99 and is available on Amazon. Below is a brief video review and my remarks regarding the set.

Pros:

High-value minifigs
Interesting model, different than the typical starfighter with wings.

Cons:

No real outstanding features (more of a neutral comment)

This is a well-balanced Star Wars set that’s got a bit of everything including an acceptable price-per-part ratio, interesting parts and colors, unique design, spring-loaded shooters, and high-value minifigs. Because many Star Wars sets these days have repetitive designs, low parts count and basic colors, the lack of criticism I have for the Coruscant Police Gunship makes it an above-average Star Wars set. There are no real drawbacks either. It’s one of the few Star Wars sets I recommend buying at retail price.

Fifty shades of grey

Monochromatic grey never looked as good as it does in this hangar scene by Jeremy Williams (Bricking It). The relatively plain color scheme is accentuated by fantastic lighting and some stellar color blocking; the yellow claw dangling from the ceiling is particularly eye-catching.

Mothership, Mothership, MOTHERSHIP!

June hopefully marks the arrival of 70816 Benny’s Spaceship, Spaceship, SPACESHIP!, which I guess marks LEGO’s first ‘official’ foray into the murky sub-culture of Neo Classic Space. To help you NCS fanatics get through these nail-bailing next few weeks, feast your eyes and saliva glands on this gloriously self-indulgent behemoth of an NCS ship by Michael Gale.

Built some years ago, shortly after Michael emerged his LEGO dark age, this monster is no mere sculpture – it has play features! Check ’em out…

As awesome as I’m sure it’s gonna be, I have a feeling Benny’s creation may need renaming Shuttlecraft, Shuttlecraft, SHUTTLECRAFT! in the light of Michael’s handiwork. I just wish I had a time machine so I could go back and show a picture of this to 12-year-old me and watch 12-year-old me’s HEAD EXPLODE.

Enemies and water not included!

We’ve seen some great smack-talk between competitors in past Iron Builder contests, but the ‘Haulics have really taken it up a notch – no, no, I’d say they’ve probably notched it up a scootch – against the Mayo‘s with this hilarious video featuring a brick built NERF SOAKER…

I thought they couldn’t top their earlier video of a working LEGO chainsaw but I guess I was wrong. This contest has already produced an insane number of one-upping builds, and I can’t wait to see how it plays out!

Friday Night Fights – Speeder Bikes

Welcome back fight fans, to Sin City Nevada, USA for another round of Friday Night Fights! Tonight we head down to the streets for some good old fashioned cyber-racing with speed bikes! Let’s go to the tale of the tape.

You never forget your first

Chris McVeigh (powerpig) has made something of a specialty in must-have, palm-sized LEGO models of retro technology. His body of work includes some iconic videogame consoles, cameras, phones, televisions and even kitchen appliances (but thankfully no fax machines yet).

In my opinion though, his latest creation – the very first Apple home computer – tops even his amazingly popular Apple Mac. But then I’m biased, because this was the first computer I ever owned! He’s nailed it, right down to the dual floppies, side vents and internal card layout. And the addition of custom printed bricks by customBricks for the screen really brings the whole thing to life.

But fear not, fellow old-timers, you don’t have to just gaze longingly at these wonderful images. Get your nostalgia on, and head over to Chris’s website where you can download instructions for many of his creations, or even order them as kits. And you won’t even have to send a check in the mail…

Isn’t modern technology wonderful?!

Well Simpsons LEGO is clearly red hot right now. Hmmm, I can’t think why! And Jimmy Fortel (6kyubi6) doesn’t miss a beat with this studs hidden model of everyone’s favorite wreck of an entertainer, Krusty the Clown.

Jimmy also noticed an obvious – and rather uncharacteristic – error in Andrew Lee‘s sculpture that we featured earlier today, and has dutifully corrected it. Thank you, Jimmy!

Invasion! at BrickCon 2014

BrickCon recently announced their theme for the 2014 convention and it is “Invasion!”. What exactly does that mean? Apparently a little background is required. Over the years it has become tradition for the various themed sections (Castle, Space, Town, etc) to invade the other layouts throughout the convention. This usually entails space marines invading the castle, dragons attacking the moonbase, pink space fungus infecting all the other layouts, Breann’s bionicles eating stuff, various renditions of the Tardis appearing out of nowhere or Space Odyssey monoliths sprouting up like mushrooms after a bad rain.

This year BrickCon is embracing that concept and taking it to a new level. The coordinators of BrickCon are encouraging you to Invade and the more the merrier! Do you have a squad of World War II marines who want to travel back in time? A cadre of Yeti who are anxious to wreak havoc on a modern city? What about a gaggle of Friends ready to rubble with some bug-eyed aliens in the Space layout? Anything goes and the funnier the better. Personally, I’m training up a squad of strawberry bears to conquer BrickCon. What are you going to bring?

Jerac hit a home run with this one. This ninjago-inspired snake mecha is rock-solid. I know this because the young Ninjago fans in my house freaked out when they walked by and saw me blogging this.

Do Mini-Figs Dream Of Plastic Sheep?

The current collaboration between the planet’s most profitable and awesome toy company and the America’s longest everything television show seems like a match made in heaven. I hope you all got to watch Sunday’s crossover episode Brick Like Me, and are now poring over it frame-by-frame to catch all 52 in-jokes and bad puns.

Judging by the activity on Flickr, it looks many of you are now having a ton of fun with your Simpsons LEGO collectible minifigures too. If you haven’t got yours yet …what’s wrong with you?!

I guess David Pickett (fallentomato) couldn’t wait for either spin-off, since he recently decided to build the First Family of Animation out of raw bricks…
