I enjoy seeing genres and bandwagons being approached with a sort of irreverent creativity, so it was great to see this OTOMech Model TK-MM, built by Dave Sterling (half of ToT-LUG) for the 2009 MOClympics. It was inspired by the Otomen manga series and brainstorming with other LEGO fans, which is a great way to get silly ideas.
My favorite features are the kitty greebles and the simple fact that the cockpit fits a Fabuland figure, but there’s a lot of other stuff to love.
With exactly one month until BrickCon, we’re teaming up with LUGNuts for their 23rd build challenge, Zombie Apocalypse Killfest ’09.
Naturally, we’re hoping that those of you who build something for this challenge will also bring it for the Zombie Apocafest 2009 collaborative display at BrickCon.
As with other LUGNuts challenges, this is sure to generate some truly creative builds. And creativity is key! We won’t be awarding prizes at BrickCon for Biggest Guns, Most Chains, or Best Use of Brown and Gray.
This challenge is about apocafied civilian vehicles, like my S&S Wildland Ultra XT brushfire engine. Note the bright red color and complete lack of chains, though I must admit that the crazy Bionicle spike strip proved irresistible…

Each detail deserves recognition! I particularly like floor design, the statues, and most of all–the eagle adorning the wall above the thrones.
Innocently disguised by the name Hill House, this demonic diorama by einsteinonthebeach is a work that would delight any Satanic cultist or others simply looking for a cool creation. Don’t miss out on the gory details such as the guillotine, the pentagram sacrificial altar, and the nice and warm blood bath.
A different Stefan (2×4) than the guy who built the Sunblade below has built the great maker. He’s captured the feel of the sandworms from the old Dune movie perfectly. The three-way split mouth filled with teeth is absolutely perfect. Also note the micro shuttle (there are no wings, so it can’t be an ornithopter) for scale.

Stefan (brainbike.rider) recently posted this excellent little starfighter. It has some nice little angles, and I love seeing a bright color scheme on a space craft from time to time. While the blade in front isn’t my favorite detail, it certainly works as an homage to Homeworld style ships.
If LEGO released Monster Bar instead of the upcoming Fire Brigade, I wouldn’t hesitate to buy it. But I don’t think the company would endorse cannibalism unlike Haung (rack911), the builder of this model. Take a look at the gallery to see what I mean.
It’s only been a month since Top Gear host James May announced that he’s building the world’s first life-sized LEGO house. Now, two-million bricks later, we see that the house is nearing completion. Would you have pictured a rainbow block in a vineyard? But then again I wasn’t expecting a mansion either. Nevertheless, this is quite a commendable effort and I echo May’s concerns that he won’t wake up in a pile of bricks, which I guess is the only case you wouldn’t want that to happen.

This month, several Neo Classic Space fans got together at Peter Reid’s house in the UK and called it The Meeting. They individually and collectively produced some great stuff, my personal favorite is the LL0505 Comet, a collaborative effort by Thomas Oechsner, Peter Reid and Stuart Crawshaw.

This is very old news for some of you, but I just realized that we never blogged the breakthrough discovery of a way to restore the original color of yellowed LEGO bricks.
LEGO fans have discussed this problem for years, even concluding (correctly) that ultraviolet light can contribute to faster yellowing of colors like white, blue, and old light gray (some of the key colors of Classic Space sets). Fans like sugegasa have experimented with the effects of sunlight on the new grays, but nobody could quite figure out how to reverse the effect on older, yellowed bricks.
That is, until now. The same problem apparently happens with other ABS products, such as the casing on older computers and video game consoles. A group of gamers over at Retr0Bright have proved conclusively that the original color of yellowed ABS can be restored by using hydrogen peroxide.
Tim Goddard gave it a try on his yellowed LEGO bricks.
Success! In brief, the problem isn’t dirt so much as a chemical reaction in the visible surface layer of the ABS plastic itself, caused by UV rays in sunlight. Immersing the LEGO bricks in a hydrogen peroxide solution permeates the surface and reverses that chemical change.
