Sculpting an organic shape in LEGO is tricky. Nathaniel has pulled this off spectacularly with King Bowser, who is offering you a blue shell. I don’t think I’d trust Bowser with that, but that’s just me. This build is just lovely: that expression! The big hands with claws! The hair and shell!
Finnish builder Eero Okkonen has built a fabulous character model of Excela Noa Aura, an Imperial Princess and Dragon Knight from the roleplaying videogame Shining Resonance. Whilst I don’t know anything about the source material, I know a great LEGO creation when I see one. This model is packed full of nice touches and detail — don’t miss the hinges and arches used on the unmistakably anime hair, the smart use of “big fig” pieces for the rather shapely legs, and the near-genius deployment of a neck ruff from the collectible minifig Shakespeare for the lacy cuffs peeking out of the sleeves.
When Ana Amari was revealed as an addition to the Overwatch hero roster, I knew I wanted her rifle added to my LEGO arsenal. It was an interesting short rifle design, had bolt action that would be fun to build, and even the concept of a healing sniper was a rad idea. The most challenging part of the build was the bolt action itself. There were countless iterations of the bolt itself that can simulate chambering the biotic round, the chamber walls hiding the bolt’s slots inside the body of the rifle to reduce gaps, and the trigger mechanism that released the bolt. All this design work led to a LEGO rifle that has realistic looking firing action, despite not actually firing.

Overwatch has spurred builders into a frenzy of creativity, and Tim Schwalfenberg has spent the last couple of weeks building a series of characters from the game to display at his local comic convention. Tim’s character builds include Mercy, Pharah, Reaper, Roadhog, Soldier 76, Tracer and Winston. I’ll start with my favourites: Mercy, a healer and staunch advocate for peace; and Reaper, an extremely volatile mercenary who is a ruthless and remorseless killer. Reaper’s face shaping is spot on and captures this intimidating, cold blooded faceless character to perfection.
If you somehow haven’t heard of Overwatch, it’s a multiplayer first-person shooter video game released in May of this year by Blizzard Entertainment. More importantly for LEGO fans, a host of brilliant depictions of the characters from the game has swiftly followed its release. Simon Lui takes the building-baton and has recreated 20-year-old monk and wanderer Zenyatta, in his typical meditative pose.
I particularly love his torso area made from taps, and the waistband of his orange pants made from mechanical arms. Those shoulders look fab but perhaps not the most robust, so it’s just as well that Zenyatta can attain a transcendent state of immunity to damage!
Kids in the Northern hemisphere are now finally starting to drift back to school, but it’s been a glorious summer of crazy outdoor fun, thanks almost entirely to the cultural phenomemon that is Pokemon GO. We’ve seen some really great LEGO builds inspired by this game, and this latest one by Hong Kong based builder Alanboar Cheung does not disappoint.

David Roberts came up with this very unusual design for a LEGO mining spacecraft with an equally unusual back story. The Platinum Asteroid Collector – Manned Auxiliary Node (more commonly referred to by it’s crew as the PAC-MAN) funnels asteroids into a mouth-like scoop at the front, and is painted bright yellow to increase visibility so that laser operators on the mothership would not blast it to pieces.
In this alternative view below, the hatch of the top is open and a drone can be seen examining a small asteroid in search of precious minerals. Apparently a computer game was later created that featured likenesses of these ships. Although to be honest, it doesn’t ring any bells.
Titanfall still is one of the most fun and intense gaming experiences I’ve had, and every titan I drop in to battle feels like the first. It should be no surprise that I am also hyped for the sequel. Several new titan types have been designed for Titanfall 2, and of the titans revealed thus far, the sword-wielding Ronin Titan stood out to me as a good idea for a LEGO build. There were a couple challenges in this approximately 8-hour build.
Bastion is a rather divisive character to fans of Overwatch. While adorable as a character, his charm does not forgive his unstoppable hail of gatling gun bullets. Piggy Brother’s LEGO rendition of Bastion is definitely a showcase of his charm. Not only are the details of his Bastion model nearly spot-on, his pose with the bird Ganymede on his finger is just like Bastion’s concept art. The continuation of the black outline over the blue “eye” using a rubber band is a great detail.
Piggy Brother even constructed his Bastion to transform into sentry mode. A rather impressive touch to his excellent model.

In a testament to the insane popularity of Angry Birds and the amazing skill of the builder, this microbuild by Letranger Absurde is instantly recognizable.
Despite the tiny size, the birds and slingshot are brilliant. I count nine pieces, and they perfectly encapsulate the birds. My favourite part usage here is the minifig slingshot which becomes supersized thanks to the scale of the scene. There are many more details, and I highly encourage you to scan the pig castle to see all the other little details for yourself.
While I have not yet played this particular title in the Legend of Zelda series, the LEGO mosaic version of Link in wall merged form built by Hans Demol is instantly recognizable. In game, Link can take the form of a wall painting to traverse the worlds and puzzles in interesting ways, and Hans shows this with a stacked plates mosaic style that works well for both the painted Link and the uneven brick wall texture.
In this close-up of Link’s face, you can see several different colors used to achieve the painted look.
Effectively utilizing custom chromed LEGO elements, ZaziNombies creates a stunning replica of Jesse McCree’s Peacekeeper six-shooter from Overwatch. I particularly like the use of a Technic gear as my favorite touch of detail on the Peacekeeper in-game: the spur on the handle.
