Swedish LUG Swebrick recently held its annual “AFOL vs AFOL” building contest. The theme this year was to build any scene from an 80’s movie or TV show featuring a vehicle. First place went to Etzel87 for this perfect choice of moment from the cult movie Ferris Bueller’s Day Off – a movie where the vehicle is actually the co-star! Some of the other entries were quite fun too.
The first installment of Peter Jackson’s sprawling Hobbit adaptation hit theaters almost two years ago now. Shortly after the premiere, Finnish builder and TBB regular Pate-keetongu decided to build two of the dwarves from the movie. And he just kept going! Now, his grand opus is finally complete. So we present to you, the company of Thorin Oakenshield in LEGO (or as the builder describes it on his blog, the “Hobbitsplosion“).
As breathtaking as the above spread is, it cannot do the individual builds justice. So we encourage you to check out the full album on Flickr, or visit the builder’s blog for lots of close-ups. Each character’s hair, costume and equipment has been accurately captured, making each one instantly recognizable.
And coincidentally, I recently interviewed this builder for a coming issue of LEGO fan magazine BrickJournal, where you’ll be able to learn more about his inspirations, building techniques, and impressive body of work.
Castle and fantasy builders certainly like to build big. But most of the large castle dioramas that we showcase are limited to exteriors. So it’s exciting to see someone focus on a large interior instead!
This amazing cathedral interior by Pippo Zane was inspired by the final scenes of the 1985 movie Ladyhawke. And while the cathedral itself is deliberately jazzier than the one in the movie, the characters are all faithfully represented.
There are so many little details to explore in this build. But I particularly love the stuff going on in the balconies, and of course the stained glass windows.

Hard to believe it’s only been a year since Chris McVeigh began his charming series of Brick Sketches, which depict various characters from comic books, cartoons and movies with ‘brush strokes’ carved from LEGO. And I think his latest one – Rocket Raccoon from the wildly popular Guardians of the Galaxy – might just be my favorite so far.
And if you like that, you’re sure to enjoy the 25+ other sketches that Chris has accumulated over the past 12 months. No doubt, everyone will have their own particular favorite! No pugs yet, though ;-)
Continuing his obsession for stud-free minifig-scale builds of iconic movie vehicles, ER0L brings us the classic Aston Martin DB5, made famous by its appearance in the earlier James Bond movies.
Much as I love this rendition, I’m still hoping that <cough> that he is going to produce a modified version featuring revolving license plates, tire slashers, bullet-proof rear screen, front mounted machine guns and – of course – an ejector seat!
It’s funny how your perspective changes with age. As a kid I was tortured annually with the BBC’s Christmas airing of the Rogers and Hammerstein musical The Sound of Music. But as an adult I find it absolutely captivating – all three hours of it. I mean, it’s got everything… Nuns. Yodeling. Christopher Plummer. Some Nazis.
In the film adaptation, the The Lonely Goatherd number was performed as a marionette show (by Bil Baird and Cora Eisenberg-Baird). And now half a century later, VirtualLUG die-hard Millie McKenzie has perfectly recreated the entire theater and its distinctive puppets for our enjoyment:

In a city that never sleeps, only one superhero knows how to get things done. That superhero is Unibat! Or is it Battikitty? Well, whatever you call this adorable hybrid by Melanie F., it’s awesome. Built to the same scale as her other giant Unikitty versions (Seasick Unikitty is my favorite), Melanie’s Unikitty army is well poised for Unikitty dominance.

We at The Brothers Brick love predatory fish and extreme weather. So we’re huge fans of SyFy’s high-brow political thriller and romantic comedy Sharknado. But we also love ridiculous New York movie stereotypes, such as rude cabbies and the pointless destruction of famous landmarks. Not surprisingly then, we’re positively shark-static about the new follow-up movie Sharknado 2: The Second One which airs July 30th on the SyFy channel. We’ll be glued to our TV’s, popcorn in one hand, bucket of chum in the other, for 2 hours of deeply thought-provoking chainsaw-tastic aquatic mayhem.
SyFy is planning Sharknado Week in celebration of its new movie. But we felt that LEGO fans deserved to be a part of that experience too. Our solution…
The Rules of Bricknado
Build a LEGO model! It can feature sharks, nados, chainsaws, New York references, celebrity cameos, whatever you like! Anything goes, the funnier and sillier the better.
Then add one photo of your creation to the Bricknado group on Flickr. You are welcome to submit more than one creation, but The Brothers Brick reserve the right to BITE YOUR FACE OFF if you overdo it! No digital creations are allowed.
All entries must be submitted before July 28th.

They’re sharks, they’re scary, and no-one wants to get eaten. But I’ve been eaten, and it takes a lot more than that to bring a good man down, and even more than that to bring a New Yorker down! This is the Big Apple… If something bites us, we bite back. So forget the umbrella, grab a chainsaw, and let’s kill some sharks!
I really don’t care whether movie critics consider Pulp Fiction to be one of the defining movies of the New-noir genre, whether it is a prime example of post-modernist film or whether it is empty-headed camp.
I think it was a hugely entertaining movie and this black-and-white mosaic of Jules and Vincent by Joris Blok is awesome. Full stop.
Ryan Ziegelbauer led a team of Lego designers to create this massive replica of The Grand Budapest Hotel from the Wes Anderson film. Together they spent around 575 hours and used more than 50,000 Lego blocks to make this 7-foot-tall model. Check out the video below for a glimpse of the building process.
The LEGO company seems to be onto a good thing putting out sets based on iconic cars from classic movies such as Back to the Future and Ghostbusters. So I think they should make this a series! In which case, they can begin by studying this amazingly accurate Interceptor from the movies Mad Max and The Road Warrior by Marcus Paul…
And after that, they can get to work on an Aston Martin ;-)
