Chris Doyle‘s stained glass creation features a complex octopus design. It incorporates both transparent bricks and plates for a more detailed depiction. I’m still left to wonder why an octopus?

Arpy has Pac-Man fever
Did you know that the red ghost in Pac-Man was named “Blinky”?
Ean (Arpy) knew that, and built a lovely mosaic using Technic pins axles instead of bricks.
Wakka wakka wakka!
Celtic Beast Mosaic
The Lee Family has been knocking out some pretty fun creations lately. My personal favorites are the Celtic mosaics, but you should check out the portrait of the Dalai Lama as well.
Bruce interviewed Craig Lee recently and has posted part of the conversation on the front page of Classic Castle.
Getting in the spirit of Halloween
With Halloween approaching, Douglas Hill creates a chilling mosaic that uses so many shades of colors that I lost my head trying to keep track of them all. Can you identify all the brick colors that were used? I’ll bet it ain’t easy.

Thanks for the tip Chip Philson! ;)
Jeweled Mosaic by Hill
This 3d mosiac by Douglas Hill is quite unusual. I keep staring at it and I like it more and more all the time. The whole is made of headlight bricks with jewels stuck in them, and then lit from the back. Wish I’d thought of it…
Mosaics of unrivaled ingenuity
Brandon Griffith (icgetaway) displayed two knockout mosaics at BrickCon last October. In addition to their enormous proportions (scale picture 1 and 2), these mosaics are constructed from effective and unusual building techniques. The first, called See Your Enemy, depicts the scene from the Matrix when Neo sees the real representation of Agent Smith. The mosaic uses transparent elements placed on top of traditional colors for an added layer of texture.
The second is a representation of the artwork from the Criterion Edition of Akira Kurosawa’s “Throne of Blood,” it uses a combination of plates, tiles, and even slopes for a variety of textures. Click here for a high resolution of the mosaic to see the details.

LEGO Barack Obama mosaic by Sean Kenney
LEGO Certified Professional Sean Kenney honors the inauguration of Barack Obama with this lovely mosaic, combining Obama’s new official portrait with Shepard Fairey’s poster design.
Knight Tapestry by Bluesecrets
Bluesecrets built an incredible mosaic tapestry for the Colossal Castle Contest. The knight and his horse are incredible!
President-Elect Barack Obama
There are more partisan LEGO images I could have chosen, but this beautiful mosaic by Udronotto seemed the most appropriate.
(Like Senator McCain’s concession speech a moment ago, let’s keep the comments civil, dear readers.)
Giant Rocketeer mosaic by Dave Ware
Seeing The Rocketeer back in 1991 was my first exposure to the concept of retro-futurism. Dave Ware has recreated the wonderful art deco look of the movie poster as a LEGO mosaic:
A few key facts from Dave’s post on the brickwares blog:
- There are 30,672 studs in the mosaic.
- 3.75 feet wide and 5.5 feet tall.
- It took 70 hours to complete.
- The parts alone would likely cost $1,000.
If you’re interested in how Dave created his mosaic, check out several in-progress updates and photos on the brickwares blog.
News: PicToBrick mosaic software now available
TBB received a message from LEGO Ambassador Juan Macias yesterday with a link to the Web site of a new LEGO mosaic tool, PicToBrick by Tobias Reichling and Adrian Schütz:
PicToBrick converts digital pictures to a format you can use to create mosaics. For LEGO fans, the software offers several cool features, including color and brick type selection.
To learn more about PicToBrick, read the full LUGNET announcement, or head on over to the English or German version of PicToBrick.de.
Tobias and Adrian are releasing PicToBrick under the Free Software Foundation’s GNU General Public License. In addition to executables that work on Windows, Mac, and Linux, they’re making the source code available. Since they’re releasing PicToBrick as “donation ware,” if you like PicToBrick, be sure to support Tobias and Adrian! :D
Dark Lord Mosaic by Chuybregts
Wow, I have been out of the loop for the last week or so. But now I’m back and ready to blog again! Anyway, while perusing Brickshelf, I noticed this incredible mosaic of Darth Vader and I had to share. So here it is!
Chuybregts’ nifty Vader mosaic:
What made this jump out at me was the fact that it jumps out at you! Done all on black, unlike most mosaics, Vader’s head appears slightly 3D. Very cool and “most impressive”.
Here’s the gallery if you want to see it, but there’s only the one pic.
Edit: Here are more pics of the Mosaic in progress! (thanks to sean mykael for the link!)
And here is a page of instructions that chuybregts made for this creation.
