Super Jerry

I told myself I wasn’t going to blog any Ma.Ktoberfest 2013 offerings this year because like some of you I find the whole end of the year sci-fi themed months to be a little overwhelming and Brother Tripod has that particular beat covered. However, my love of a great diorama overrides any such petty concerns and it is my pleasure to share with you “Super Jerry” by Logan (∞CaptainInfinity∞) that has just the right mix of detailed vehicles, understated landscaping and good photography from a builder who knows how to frame a shot. The tree isn’t too shabby either.

Mechabrick: turn your minifigs into mecha

One of the many cool things I didn’t list in my report on Steam 2013 was mechabrick.

It was started by British AFOL Ben Jarvis that combines three of his passions: Lego, robots and wargaming. Ben has launched a kick-starter project to get it under way. If successful, this should enable the launch of the first mechabrick kit, which will consist of all the parts you need to turn four minifigs into kick-ass mecha (with friggin’ big guns, of course) and four boards that are to be combined to form the play board. The kit will also contain stickers to customise the mecha, as well as dice and a rulebook. Mechabrick is more than just a war game with mecha, however. An essential and fun part of the game will be building the scenery and obstacles on the game board with our favourite plastic bricks. Ben built a rather impressive example for the show.

At the event I had the opportunity to handle two of the prototypes and they looked (and felt) promising. I’m sure that plenty of you, like Ben, are fans of Lego, robots and wargaming. Evan (Lego Junkie) has been hard at work since Brickcon a mere week ago, and the first fruit of his labor is this awesome³ mecha. Here’s a video of the transformation.

“Kurogane no Linebarrel”

One of our resident masters of Mecha Izzo Legostyle returns to give you the uncut fix you so desperately need. The model is based on Japanese Manga also known as “Linebarrels of Iron” that tells a boilerplate story of a bullied junior high school student who acquires super powers and a giant robot to dispense justice and one-liners while causing a great deal of mayhem. I’m not sure why, but my eye is drawn to those beefy yet precarious looking legs.

Drill Man feels terrible for squishing the bunny!

I was initially unsure of the story behind this, but had to post it for no other reason than it made me laugh. However, upon further investigation it appears that it’s creator, Sweetsha is in a competition with 74louloute utilizing the brown claw pieces. Then it made it all the more funny because I thought that bunny looked familiar.

I will have to be sure to watch this rivalry as it transpires.

Gunnlöð the Future Heavy Equipment

The inimitable Izzo makes the future of backhoes downright sexy with his Gunnlöð the Future Heavy Equipment. This behemoth construction multiped looks right at home, digging the footings of our future cities. Pay particular attention to the wonderful mechanical greebling that makes the Gunnlöð feel so real. If you’re wondering what a Gunnlöð is, I looked it up. While Izzo states that Gunnlöð is the Norse God of War, as best as I can figure out, she is the daughter of the giant Suttungr who guarded the sacred mead of poetry. But heck, what’s in a name. Call it by any other name, this is one sexy backhoe.

Borris the Pirate Jigbot

I’m ordinarily fond of making up fun titles for my posts here, but with this new creation by Nick V (Brickthing), the title of the photo beats anything I could add. Moreover, this little not is hilarious, adorable, and well built. The use of a Death Star sphere for a head is inspired, as several of the other details.

I’m gonna cut you good!

Joe Perez (MortalSwordsman) returns by popular demand with this manga inspired Angel Dragon. The builder calls it an “action figure“, and with a pose like this, who am I to debate such wisdom.

Galidor Returns!

Angus MacLane (MacLane) brings us an awesome hardsuit, with a Galidor twist. He’s combined a great model with one of the worst things ever made by Lego. When he hears that Galidor was canceled, he’ll be crying himself to sleep on his colossal pillow.

Moko Under a Silvery Moon

I guess September is the month of Moko. He continues his streak of amazing builds with the Silver Moon, a gorgeous mecha covered in silver and gold elements. It’s hard to pull off a complete look when certain colors are limited to a few element types. Well, hard for the rest of us mere mortals, clearly not hard for a master like Moko.

The mech from the deep

Indonesian builder Toto Hermanto‘s latest mech is this super cool blue and grey machine. With those split legs, this mech brings a bit of a different aesthetic from many of the mechs I see, which is refreshing, and Toto’s added some great greebles to it.

Carter’s New Mecha

I spotted the first of these new mecha by Carter Baldwin ([Carter]) last week, but didn’t manage to blog it then. Fortunately, good things come to those who wait, and Carter has now posted an interesting variant on the first model. They’re both worth checking out, from the ball shaped cockpit and frame that stays the same, to the decorations that make them so different. My favorite is the pink bunny decoration, presumably inspired by Sucker Punch.
