About Thanel

The actual biological brother of Andrew Becraft. Recently emerging from dim ages and participating more actively in the LEGO community. Moving beyond just squealing in delight under the Christmas tree every year and on birthdays. Actively involved in SandLUG and newly posting on Flickr under the name Yupa-sama. Main interests are in historical vignettes, architecture, Star Wars, the seedy underbelly of anything, Japan, nature, Terry Pratchett's Discworld and clever things that tickles his fancy. Generally just fascinated by culture, subculture, counterculture and multiculture. Married, two and half cats, securely employed (thank god), vegetarian teetotaler and news junkie. Apologies for the slight anonymity, but unlike most people, in Thanel's line of work--alas, not secret agency--online networking is as likely to be detrimental as constructive. Connecting with clients personally and repeat business are distinctly bad ideas, so he'd rather keep his real name on the DL as much as possible. He's happy to reveal his secret identity in-person (or online as Andrew's brother). He just wants to keep the explicit electronic signature of his real name and undisclosed underground bunker location to a minimum.

Backlog of goodness

Luis Baixinho uploaded a mountain of backlog pictures, and it’s full of greatness. Beyond the sheer coolness of each creation, the great thing is the variety in the types of builds he does. First this Star Trek shuttle . . .

. . . then this great butterfly.

Fantastic range for a single builder.

Daniel Z’s Slot Weijenaard

Um. Yeah. Wow. And this is only one of about half a dozen phenomenal creations by Daniel Z “DNL” posted this past week for pretty much every category in the Colossal Castle Contest VII. This one stands out to me because brown is an unusual color for castle creations, castles of this tone and type are actually more common throughout the world than we initially think, and I like brown. There! I said it. I like brown.

Thumbnail head-check

The best thing I can say about this model of a Jelcz 315 crane truck by Maciej Drwiega is that from the thumbnail I wondered if someone had mistakenly posted a real truck to a LEGO flickr group. To my pleasant surprise and awe, it’s all LEGO. Apparently I’m not the only one who thought so.

lugpol’s impending LEGO domination

Their 1-step plan is apparently to have their members build mindbogglingly awesome stuff, again and again and again. Really, I want to know how the creations posted online with the little lugpol logo are so consistently great.

crises-crs‘ Zero to Hero – part 1: Winter

LEGO crises_crs knight training

Great by itself, but in parts 2 and 3, he subtly changes the lighting, some building details, and the action to capture the different feel of the seasons and the progress of the hero’s training.

For a very different feel, but equally neat creation, here’s PigletCiamek‘s Arabian Street 2: The Caravanserai.

Any lugpol members out there, please tell us why you are so totally cool. I know it’s nothing sinister, but I would like to know what certain groups do to regularly present such an impressive level of building, LowLUG is another prime example.

Sebastian Arts’ Scherpenheuvel Church

Sebastian Arts (Aliencat!) posted pictures of this church based on a real one in Sherpenheuvel, Belgium. Like any great creation there are a lot of different things to like, but for me it’s the basic color scheme and uneven wall texture.

He has more on his MOCpages, including fantastic rear and interior details.

Buon natale

Love the composition, photography and sentiment. It’s always nice when photographers and artists like Marco Pece (udronotto) use LEGO in their work.

It’s worth checking out the rest of his photostream. Not exactly purist, but a lot of fun stuff.

Giant windmill of . . . well, grinding

Francesco Tavella (Tavernellos) posted this great windmill a couple weeks ago and I’m finally getting around to it. He provides plenty of detailed shots and a video so you can check out more of its features, including the moving functions. Good stuff.

Dragon’s Lair: If Indiana Jones were a samurai

This diorama by Kevin Fedde (Crimson Wolf) is just packed with too much hot stuff. Spend some time scoping out all the fun details and techniques.

I swear I walked past this place on my way home tonight

This vignette by Wojciech Scrat captures the ambiance of drinking dens all over the world. I’ve been waiting to blog it for a while, but it is sort of timeless. Sad peasant face is sad.

I love this for so many personal and professional reasons, which will remain terribly mysterious.

Sinking perspective

This is just a fun new creation by pirate cat. In addition to the most obvious effect created by building in two different scales, he builds in some nice wreckage, captures the action, and my personal favorite: wiggling legs sticking out of the water.

[Edit: This has been blogged here before. It’s just that good. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it!]

Flaming awesome!

Bright. Colorful. Creative. Life-like. Suntastic. Not quite a loss for words, too many adjectives to describe this cool sculpture, Helios, by David Pickett (fallentomato).

Temple of the LEGO Gods

Dylan B. posted this great temple a few days ago and I’m finally getting around to it. I especially like the stones around the pond, thought that’s not the only cool feature by any means.
