News: Don and dW’s Steam-Wars contest on FBTB

Don Solo and dWhisper on FBTB Forums have started an interesting contest that should generate some very cool LEGO creations. The idea is simple: Recreate any Star Wars vehicle in a steampunk style.

As a (small) example of the sort of design the judges are going for, Don posted this adorable little steampunk R2-D2:

I can’t wait to see what sort of cool vehicles people will come up with.

LL-142 by Peter Reid

What’s not to love about Peter Reid‘s latest Classic Space ship? There’s the awesome retro color scheme, an X-pod for a cockpit, retractable landing gear, and enough greebly bits to blow your mind.

The secret of the Zephyr

Can you spot the very special way in which Tim Zarki‘s flyer is powered?

Happy New Year 2008 from The Brothers Brick!

I look forward to New Years every year for all the great New Years-themed creations from Japanese LEGO fans. Many of the creations are in the form of New Years cards, or nengajou, which I wrote about back in 2006 (check out the 2007 roundup as well).

For 2008 — the Year of the Rat — our fellow builders across the Pacific have graced us with another batch of wonderful nengajou. Since the word for “rat” and “mouse” is the same in Japanese (ネズミ, pronounced “nezumi”), many of these feature mice.

We’ll get things going with Mumu’s best wishes for 2008:

Izzo presents a rideable mouse:

Kwi Chang uses a line art version of one of his mecha:

Mashikuf gets deliciously cheesy:

Ayucow puts mice in a pizzeria kitchen:

Finally, Maciek Drwięga (who I suspect isn’t Japanese) joins the celebrations with a bit of a bang (via Klocki):

Updates: And one more from suu:

MisaQa joins the fun (a bit belatedly, but worth the wait) with a batch of adorable mice (via Klocki):

His skin was pale and his eye was odd.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is director Tim Burton’s latest collaboration with Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter. Sir Nadroj‘s vignette uses a partial basement to evoke a very “Burtonesque” atmosphere for his vignette version of a scene from the film.

Martin Luther gets contentious

Chris Wunz commemorates the moment when Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the church door in Wittenberg, Germany. I love the cobblestones and the arches over the door.

The King’s Cloud by Mark Stafford

The CCCV entries just keep pouring in. Mark Stafford‘s entry is a fantastical flying ship in golds and blues. There are so many Bionicle parts in this creation that I think it deserves to be in the “Bionicle” category. ;-)

Ða com of more under misthleoþum / Grendel gongan, godes yrre bær.

It’s been a while since we’ve featured any creations by Micah Berger, so it’s nice to see a whole bunch of updates to his Brickshelf gallery.

My favorite is a rather grisly scene from Beowulf, accompanied by the quote “Then came Grendel… He bore God’s wrath” (that’s the original Old English in the post title). I’ve never seen minifigs dispatched in quite this many different ways…

Fireboy gets an upgraded ride

Although I’d bookmarked his character Fireboy’s previous vehicle to blog later, Brent was unsatisfied with it. I’ll definitely agree that the new ship is indeed much improved. I love the angled flames and the awning over the cockpit.

Ful redy hadde he hise apothecaries / To sende him drogges and his letuaries.

Aaron Andrews‘ final entry for this year’s Colossal Castle Contest (CCCV) is a medieval purveyor of poultices and unguents. With lots of action going on outside and a full interior, there are plenty of details to find in the pictures in Aaron’s gallery on Brickshelf.

(The post title is a quote from Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, describing the relationship between the Physician and the men who supplied him with pharmaceuticals.)

The everyday world of Arvo

The last few LEGO creations by the Arvo brothers may have skewed toward the fantastic, but that doesn’t mean these two guys aren’t also masters of the everyday object.

Here’s their latest — a wonderful snorkeling mask:

You can discuss this creation in this thread on Hispalug. (Thanks for the link, Carlos!)

And since we haven’t featured them here before, a few more day-to-day items:

The further adventures of Mike Crowley’s Snowblower Man

Mike Crowley‘s latest installments in his ongoing series of Snowblower Man vignettes introduce a new character — Snowblower Man’s girlfriend.

Naturally, our hero got his girl her own snowblower. Here they are — matching his and hers snowblowers:
