Boeing 808-200 Starliner by Nick Dean

I’m sitting here in my Seattle backyard watching the jets fly overhead as I type this. Perhaps someday, our homegrown Boeing will develop the sort of spaceliner Nick Dean has imagined in LEGO, and I can watch it streak across the starry night from my cabin on the moon.

The underside features working landing gear and a scramjet scoop. See more photos, and read Nick’s fanciful description, in the full photoset on Flickr.

Tengen Taishi mecha by Phong Chang

I hadn’t encountered LEGO mecha builder Phong Chang until recently, but it looks like he’s been building some pretty cool mecha for some time. His latest is apparently an update to an earlier version, titled “Tengen Taishi” — inspired by the recent anime series Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann.

King Kong scales the LEGO Architecture Empire State Building

Matt Wagner (jedimasterwagner) has created a CAD version of the LEGO Architecture Empire State Building, complete with King Kong and a bunch of angry humans.

I also really like this Space Shuttle launch scene that incorporates a shuttle designed by Matt Holland.

LEGO Battles for Nintendo DS now available [News]

The early impressions about LEGO Battles (a new real-time strategy game for Nintendo DS) weren’t entirely positive, but Destructoid played the game at E3 2009 earlier this month and has a different viewpoint.

Conrad Zimmerman writes:

I’m looking forward to playing this, in part because it looks adorable but also because the simplification of what can often be a convoluted style of game really appeals to me. I avoid RTS games not because they aren’t really fun but because I can’t keep track of everything going on and wind up just getting wiped out when the second or third attack on my forces is made. LEGO Battles looks just simple enough to play that I may be picking this one up when it comes out.

Electric Counterpoint

Kaye may have dropped off the LEGO scene for a while, but he’s back with a couple of unique mecha. My favorite is Kronos, with a pair of massive guns slung over its shoulders.

M-Tron 6989 Mega Core Magnetizer – motorized with Power Functions

LEGO released 6989 Mega Core Magnetizer in 1990. Jarek (Jerrec) made it awesome in 2009.

Jarek added Power Functions and tweaked some of the details, but the spirit of the original set is all there.

Islands in a Sea of LEGO

Chris Edwards (cjedwards47) recently uploaded photos of his fourth LEGO island, which incorporates something I’ve never seen before in a LEGO creation — dripping water.

The dripping water below the overhanging rock stands out, undoubtedly, but the island has lots more to offer the LEGO visitor. See more photos in the full photoset on Flickr.

Custom LEGO Star Wars Slave Leia minifig

I’m generally not impressed with the results of combining clay or Sculpey with LEGO minifigs, but Peter C. (Pete Corp) has achieved amazing results with this custom minifig of Princess Leia as Jabba the Hutt’s slave girl.

Princess Leia’s armband, bikini, and ponytail are all sculpted from clay — amazing detail at this small scale.

Check out Pete’s photostream for lots more photos, including close-ups and fascinating shots of the work-in-progress minifig.

We have cargo inbound

This microscale transport by Haung (rack911) is an excellent creation that makes good use of colors, not to mention a few parts such as planks and textured wall pieces, which are definitely not expected on a spaceship but nevertheless works well in this case!

Love of the Brick – a LEGO documentary

At last year’s BrickWorld, Dr. Jay Hanes from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania and collaborators captured the marvels of LEGO fans and their exhibition and produced a documentary about the love of the brick. At this year’s BrickWorld, you can watch a screening of the documentary and meet the producers and many of the featured builders. You can learn more about “Love of the Brick” here and watch the trailer below:

Aaaah! Settling into the suds.

This vignette by Wojcietch Scrat was just too irresistibly silly not to blog.
