TFOL Joshua Christenson from Washington State finds inspiration from the classic board game Monopoly and its mascott Rich Uncle Pennybags. Based on a characature of financier and banker J. P. Morgan, Pennybags beckons you for another rousing game of bankrupting your opponents. Joshua has been on a roll with his scuptures lately and is clearly someone to keep an eye on in the coming years.

Bart De Dobbelaer discovers a monstrous red beetle
I’m reading paleontologist Richard Fortey’s Horseshoe Crabs and Velvet Worms right now, learning all about the weird and wonderful fauna of the Ediacaran and early Cambrian, so I was happy to encounter this lovely red arthropod by Bart De Dobbelaer.
Bart’s big bug is of course thoroughly modern, lovingly mounted for display in his cabinet of curiosities.
Elvis can’t leave the building!
…because it is too big to fit out the door.
Ryan McNaught has built quite possibly the coolest helicopter ever to be created with LEGO. His Erickson Air-Crane “Elvis” has been created with over 100,000 LEGO elements, and was built in only a month! Those of you lucky enough to be attending Brickvention will be able to see it in person this weekend.
I was having trouble deciding which photos to include in the post, so please be sure to click through the photoset, but this engine detail shot puts a gigantic smile on my face.
The only thing left to say is; let’s see a swoosh pic Ryan!
The best of Count Blockula: BigFig Pirate
One of the last major models Mike Crowley posted online was a new type of brick-built figure, the “BigFig.” BigFigs are built from bricks, but look like large minifigs. Mike showed off his new idea with a recreation of the classic LEGO Pirates captain minifig:
In March 2009, Mike wrote:
Basic features include:
– head can rotate
– face / hairpiece can be customized
– arms are connected with Technic axles to prevent “drooping” when holding objects
– hands can rotate
– torso and hip-piece fronts and backs can be customized
– legs are connected using Technic rotating / ratcheting click hinges, allowing for some rotation backward and full 90 degree rotation forward (into the seated position)
– head, arms, hands, hips and legs all separate in the same places that a regular-sized minifig’s do
– the rear and bottoms of the legs have “holes” built into them to resemble those on the legs of a regular-sized minifig and are spaced so as to fit onto “studs” built 2×2 and spaced 2 studs apart from one another.
In case you’d like to try your own hand at building a BigFig, Mike even posted a breakdown:
Zombie!
I will admit to not watching zombie movies, because…well…they freak me out (Shaun of the Dead notwithstanding).
However, I can still appreciate a nicely created zombie model. Especially one as cool as Chris Maddison’s (cmaddison) latest creation.
…still creeps me out though!
Check out the full photo set for all the creepy details.
So Long And Thanks For All The Fish
Sometimes it’s not the biggest models that make a splash, as Michael Jasper proves with this stunning dolphin sculpture. And, no, I don’t think Michael intended a Hitchhiker’s Guide reference, but that’s what I think of every time I see dolphins.
Fuente de Cibeles in Classical LEGO form
Víctor Martínez Nouvilas has recreated the Fuente de Cibeles, the iconic centerpiece of the Plaza de Cibeles in Madrid. I am a sucker for classical art in LEGO and Victor nailed it.
LEGO rotary phone
Chris McVeigh’s telephone takes me back to my childhood. We had one that looked just like this. I haven’t missed rotary phones until now. Thanks, Chris!
Ee chee wa maa!!
I love Ewoks! When I was but a wee lad, I would run around the forest with a stick pretending I was on Endor. I even named my parents’ dog Wicket :)
So seeing Eric Druon’s (Baronsat) recent LEGO Star Wars creation just had me smilin’. He is just too darn cute :D
Master Cheese
We see a lot of bright green and dark green Master Chiefs built from LEGO, but the legendary John-117 SPARTAN II super-soldier from Halo is actually wearing olive green armor.
Tyler (Legohaulic) recently picked up over a hundred “cheese” slopes in the new color, and this is the result.
The most accurate LEGO Master Chief? By no means, but this is an absolute tour-de-force in single-part repetition, and certainly the first Master Chief sculpture in the correct color. It’ll be interesting to see what other new LEGO models this new color will inspire.
Fredo busts out Captain America
I always enjoy when a LEGO builder surprises me. As much as I love all of the mecha, sky-fi, and Vic Vipers that Fredoichi builds, he’s actually quite a diverse builder who’s been dabbling recently in medium-scale sculptures. His latest is an interesting bust of Captain America.
Fredo accomplishes some of the detail with stickers, and says, “Stickering took more time than the actual build.” If the result looks this great, who am I to quibble with such non-purist ways?
Gilcelio is Raising the Bar
When it comes to using odd parts like the faces from the Cars sets, Gilcelio Chagas is certainly a heavy-lifter. This awesome strongman may look a little wobbly in the knees, but he knows how to heft the weight when it counts.
