LEGO at Toy Fair New York 2016: Wrap-up [News]

The 2016 New York Toy Fair continues through tomorrow, but with the LEGO preview event we attended on Saturday morning, we’re ready to summarize our coverage here at The Brothers Brick. Our friends over at From Bricks to Bothans have also provided excellent coverage of all the licensed themes, so be sure to head over there and check out comprehensive coverage from them (with the event limited to just two hours, we missed a few things while trying to cover everything). Similarly, Joe Meno has also posted photos on Flickr.

The biggest news from Toy Fair was the official unveiling of 75098 Assault on Hoth.

Let’s just say that the reaction from the LEGO Star Wars fan community was … mixed, as illustrated by this useful diagram that’s been circulating on Facebook (we’re trying to dig up the original source — give him or her a shout-out in the comments if you know).

One item we haven’t covered yet is our demo video of the new Ghostbusters 3 Ecto-1.

75827 Ghostbusters Firehouse Headquarters revealed [News]

The long-rumored 75827 Ghostbusters Firehouse Headquarters is finally unveiled this morning. Oddly, LEGO has chosen to release the first photographs of the set picturing it in front of the actual firehouse used in the film, instead of the usual polished press photos. There’s no accompanying press release as yet, but we do know the set will contain 4,634 pieces and nine minifigures: Peter Venkman, Raymond Stantz, Egon Spengler, Winston Zeddemore, Janine Melnitz, Dana Barrett, Louis Tully, Zombie Driver and the Library Ghost. It will also include Slimer and pink and blue ghosts. The set will be available for purchase in January for $349.99 USD.

As excited as we all are to see the very cool Ghostbusters CUUSOO set finally hit the shelves, wouldn’t it be even cooler if it came with a street to drive down, or some ghosts to fight? Korean building team OliveSeon realized this, and they went and did something about it…

Build your won Ghostbusters HQ firehouse with instructions from Ecto-1 designer Brent Waller [Instructions]

Even though Brent Waller‘s LEGO Ghostbusters Ecto-1 set was recently approved as the latest official CUUSOO set, you might be among those disappointed that the beautifully rendered Firehouse in Brent’s original CUUSOO project wasn’t also approved.

But fear not! Brent has just released the step-by-step instructions for the Ghostbusters HQ in LEGO Digital Designer (LDD) format.

LEGO to Make Official Ghostbusters Set [News]

Ghostbusters will be the next official Cuusoo set, LEGO announced today on the blog for the Cuusoo site. Cuusoo is a LEGO website that allows fans to submit ideas to LEGO. If an idea garners 10,000 votes, LEGO will examine if they are able to turn the idea into an official set. Several sets gained the requisite votes in the last review session, but thus far only fan Brent Waller’s Ghostbusters project has been confirmed for transformation into an official set. Another Ghostbusters project also reached the 10,000 vote mark, but LEGO has decided to only pursue Waller’s project, since it reached the vote threshold first, and the model designers liked the car better.

We don’t know yet what the final set will look like, since, as is the case with all Cuusoo projects, it is the idea, not the specific model, that LEGO has agreed to produce. Pictured above is Waller’s Ghostbusters model.

There’s something strange in the neighborhood

Lately I have been updating some of my older models, but seeing Ghostbusters for the umpteenth time last week inspired me to build something new for a change: Ecto-1. It had been on my to-do list for months.

Ghostbusters (2)

It’s not the first Ecto-1 blogged here: a minifig scale version by misterzumbi and both minifig and large scale versions by Orion Pax have been featured here before, but I wanted my own version.

I decided to build a largish model, so that I could have working features such as steering and opening doors, which is the main thing that sets my model apart from the others. Ecto-1 in the movie was a converted ambulance built on a ’59 Cadillac commercial chassis. My starting point was a pink ’59 Cadillac convertible I built several years ago. That vehicle has a considerably shorter wheelbase and no roof, obviously, but the front end and the iconic tailfins are the same.

Who you gonna call?

A drawback of the larger scale is that it isn’t suited for minifigs, which is why I opted for brick-built figures. Ecto-1 wouldn’t be complete without the Ghostbusters themselves and a “focused, non-terminal repeating phantasm, or a Class Five full roaming vapor”. You’ve got to love (s)lime green!
