Sylon’s sky-fi aircraft is just plane awesome

Here at Brothers Brick we have a soft spot for both vintage vehicles and sleek spacehips, so when a custom sky-fi model comes across our radar, we have to cover it. Thomas Weigelt is no stranger to flying craft that fuse retro and futuristic elements, and their latest creation might be my favorite craft the builder has yet made.  First, it’s a seaplane, which brings to mind the dogfights and adventure of Porco Rosso and Tail Spin. Second, it’s a biplane, with curved wings that evoke a dragonfly. And finally, it packs a monster piston engine that you can practically hear firing up.

Thomas’s color blocking is phenomenal, with dark blue detailing, a complementary stripe of orange, and a pop of lime green on the propeller. The piston design uses wheels topped with ice skates and packs big muscle car energy. And the propeller blades are made from Uruk-hai swords, an inspired choice of part. When I see a build like this, I want to know more about the pilot. Was it a hero like Porco Rosso, a pirate like Don Karnage?

Cherry Pie takes to the skies

It’s finally a nice day in the Pacific Northwest and this LEGO creation by Cowboy Joe reminds me that it’s a great day for flying. All I need is a biplane, a hangar, the money to have both, and the know-how to fly such a magnificent plane. I guess I’ll have to settle for admiring this Technic marvel from the safety of the internet. It’s called Cherry Pie and my opinion says it’s the most cherry thing I’ve seen all day; and I’ve seen a YouTube video of a school marching band covering Crazy Train. Unless this is a well-known builder going incognito under a different name, this would seem to be the first time we’ve covered this builder’s work so let’s give Cowboy Joe The Brothers Brick Bumb they deserve!

Down, down, and away?

“Mayday!” – well that’s never good to hear. Douglas Hughes fashions a little red biplane in some big trouble in this LEGO micro-model.

Mayday!

The background featured in this postcard-like photo is brick-built using a number of different elements including various slopes, bricks, and plates in light blue and white for the red plane to crash through. The plane’s body mainly utilizes the plane minifigure costume featured in the series 21 collectible minifigure set, with some added parts to create a second pair of wings and a cockpit. Black 2×2 round tiles serve as a smokey cloud trailing behind the plane – the signifier of disaster. Overall for a minimal build, its concept is surely conveyed.

Must be a day of planes...

Mikepsiaki has built a cute little biplane that I couldn’t pass up:

While the construction of this plane is deceptively simple, the beauty of it really jumps out at you. Using mostly basic bricks, the builder has really captured a neat plane. He says it isn’t based on any real plane, but it is a perfect example of the genre. Slightly cartoony, really cute, and just a little bit burly…overall a sweet little plane.
