2019 LEGO Advent Calendars, Day 23

Welcome to Day 23 of our LEGO Advent Calendar countdown. Each day, we’ll reveal the four mini-builds from the LEGO Harry Potter, LEGO Star Wars, LEGO Friends, and LEGO City 2019 advent calendars along with commentary from The Brothers Brick team.

If you’re opening one (or more) of these advent calendars along with us, we’ve made sure the pictures and commentary on each day’s models will be behind a jump so we don’t accidentally ruin the surprise. What holiday glee will come from Day 23?

For Day 23, we have Professor Dumbledore from Harry Potter and a festive Gonk droid from Star Wars.

Dave: On the second to last day of the LEGO advent calendar countdown, we have Hogwarts Headmaster and Professor Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore. He is decked out exactly as he appears in 75964 Hogwarts Great Hall, but he is still a fan favorite and a good choice to help round out the advent. (I did feel a twinge of disappointment he didn’t have any exclusive printing, but after SO many days of exclusives in this Harry Potter advent, I’ve been conditioned to expect nothing but the best!)

For Star Wars, we have a brick-built festive Gonk droid. Now this is exactly what the Star Wars advent needed–a shot of holiday cheer and humor. I do miss the days of exclusive minifigs like Darth Santa, Santa Maul, Snow Chewbacca, Snowman R2-D2, Christmas Tree Astromech Droid, Santa Yoda, and more. These days it seems like the exclusive holiday themed characters are either brick-built like this one or just get a Santa hat slapped on like the snowboarding BB-8 from two years ago. Perhaps Disney is exerting a bit more control on the holiday variants of Star War characters. Regardless, this festive Gonk droid is a real present!

Lino: “There, that should get you through baggage claim without incident.”

Benjamin: “Hmm, I wonder what this present from Industrial Automaton could be?”

Chris: I love that gonk droid!

Chuck: Those round 1×1 plates with a handle have really improved the options for gonk droid feet.

Continuing with Day 23, we have a chef robot from Friends and a dog sled from City.

Dave: For Friends, we have a chef robot named “Zobita” to go along with the robot Zobo from the LEGO Friends shows and sets (maybe his daughter or another close relative?). The antenna on the back can be used to prop up the character like a kickstand. While the 1×1 heart tile is nice, I can’t help but feel this build and the Santa robot from Day 13 should have been swapped to make the end of the calendar more festive, like “Santa Claus is coming to town!”

For City we have a dog sled with a husky pulling a simple sled, perfect for the minifig with the snowboard from Day 20 to get up the snowy mountain. While most of the parts are fairly common, the husky is still relatively special, appearing in nearly every LEGO City advent calendar since 2015 and most recently the Xtra Xmas Accessories polybag.

Lino: Krunk-Bot 3000 now cooks for the Iditarod team.

Benjamin: Friends seems to be going a bit overboard with the STEM theme. Did we need two robots, but only one cute animal?

Chris: Hover dog, hover dog, does whatever a hover dog does…

Chuck: Poor puppy, getting its essence drained by a vampiric sled…

Whenever we can, we’ll mash up all the LEGO advent calendar builds from that specific day and see what kind of hilarity ensues. Please enjoy these hijinks!

Dave: “By the power vested in me by the Deathly Hallows, I now pronounce you Mr. and Mrs. Robots.” (That Friends mailbox from Day 16 looks like it is a match made in heaven for the Gonk droid!)

Lino: It was a crazy scheme but Dumbledore just might pull it off this time.

Benjamin: Matchmaker, Matchmaker, make me a match…

Chris: Wedding bells in Hogwarts?

Chuck: “Today, on Family Feud…”

City always concludes with a Santa minifig, doesn’t it? I know back when the SWAC was strictly Lucas-era builds, Day 23 was always a ride for whichever Santa-themed character you got on the final day. Gonk-mas Droid doesn’t seem suited to that, but the dog sled could very well be a more budget-minded version of Santa’s usual sleigh and reindeer.
