LEGO Star Wars is one of the most popular LEGO themes of all time. Far beyond X-wings and TIE fighters, there’s a whole expanded universe of inspiration, and an army of LEGO fans ready to build whatever comes out of George Lucas’s head next.

Darth Mouse, Sith Meets Mickey

I spotted this a week ago, and failed to get a post published until now. I still think this creation by Nick V (brickthing) is worth sharing, though. I’ve been seeing a lot of Disney/Star Wars mashups, since the announcement that Disney was acquiring Lucasfilm, but this is the first I’ve seen in LEGO. Darth Vader meets Mickey, I love it!

Behold, the Kraken awakes! Iain Heath (Ochre Jelly) debuted his “KR-KN Destroyer Destroyer” at SEALUG’s LEGO display at Emerald City Comicon last month, and I’ve been waiting impatiently for him to get it online. The official LEGO Star Wars 10221 Super Star Destroyericon set is, frankly, a bit dull, so Iain has jazzed it up with a space monster of epic proportions.

Release the KR-KN!

Read Iain’s backstory on The Living Brick, and go see it in person at Tableau Software, home of Seattle’s next batch of IPO millionaires.

Did Han shoot first?

It is irrelevant who shot first. If it were Han, than Greedo should have had better reflexes. If it were Greedo, than he should have had better aim. So clearly Han was just better at scum and villainy.

Oh yeah, Logan (CaptainInfinity) built a rockin’ DL-44 Blaster that Han would be proud of…and that Greedo would be afraid of.

Toy Fair NY 2013 LEGO coverage by FBTB – LOTR, Lone Ranger, Star Wars, & more

We’ll get to the annual Toy Fair trade show in New York at some point, but in the meantime, FBTB continues to provide great coverage of all the upcoming LEGO sets we can expect in 2013.

Show highlights include new LEGO Lord of the Rings sets, the usual Star Wars assortment, and the first official unveiling of the Lone Ranger sets based on the upcoming movie.

Before you dive into the pictures, one important note: LEGO sets and packaging displayed at toy industry trade shows are often (but not always) prototypes. This can be particularly noticeable on the minifigs, which may have stickers on their torsos instead of printing, and accessories may even be milled or 3D-printed rather than injection-molded. Enjoy the preview, but save your “quality” commentary until official photos or the sets themselves have been released later.

LEGO Lone Ranger

It looks like there will be six sets to accompany the new Disney version of The Lone Ranger starring Johnny Depp as Tonto. LEGO designer Marcos Bessa has shared one official photo of 79111 Constitution Train Chase, so I’ll include that here alongside FBTB’s pictures.

LEGO Lord of the Rings

After a holiday season full of new LEGO Hobbit sets, Lord of the Rings returns with a fresh batch of four sets due out in June, including 79006 The Council Of Elrond:

LEGO Star Wars

Tatooine has always been my favorite planet in the Star Wars universe, so I’ve been enjoying the recent focus on that planet for sets from the Classic Trilogy, such as the updated 75020 Jabba’s Sail Barge, complete with Max Rebo:

Shrink-O-Matic Naboo Starfighter

The Palpatine’s Shrink-O-Matic contest over at FBTB comes to a close at midnight PST tonight. One of my favourite entries that I have stumbled across is this Naboo Starfighter by Bartosz Sasiński (bartosza6m (War-C)). The construction of the cockpit is absolutely brilliant, and the sleek shaping is spot on. Plus the display stand really adds a nice final polish.

The best of Count Blockula: The Mos Eisley Cantina project

As we return to our regular programming, Mike Crowley is being laid to rest in his hometown of Melrose, Massachusetts today. I have so many more favorites I want to share that I’ll be interspersing a few more among the new LEGO models we’ll begin posting again.

One of Mike’s most ambitious LEGO projects was to build a larger-than-Miniland-scale version of the Mos Eisley Cantina and all its denizens. Josh blogged Ponda Baba back in 2008, and this wonderful sculpture of the infamous Aqualish pirate has certainly stood the test of time.

Ponda Baba

You can almost hear jaunty music when you see all the Bith musicians of the Cantina Band.

Mike’s scale and building style are particularly well-suited to alien creatures like Muftak & Kabe.

The best of Count Blockula: “Cover me Porkins!”

In November of 2007 Mike unleashed perhaps the greatest Star Wars creation of all time, everyone’s favorite obese X-Wing pilot and his trusty “keg-droid” sidekick B3-3R.  For my money, this this model perfectly symbolizes Mike’s inventive building style and clever sense of humor.
