All aboard the Parisian subway!

There’s a lot to love in this LEGO Parisian subway built by Renaud Petit. The “Miniland” and “LEGO Shop” signs tell me this is my stop and I should get out and explore a bit. I particularly like the extremely Parisian man with his typical French striped shirt, French neckerchief, French bread, French beret, and French bulldog. He’s looking disparagingly at a sleeping French hobo, which I believe is a clochard in French. I don’t know if this is a cultural thing or not but everyone in this composition seems a bit upset. Perhaps everyone needs a good French press coffee and a croissant to take the edge off?

A familiar meme like you’ve never seen it before

A picture of a brick-built monkey puppet giving you the side-eye might be on your LEGO BINGO card for today, but the Internet works in mysterious ways. This model by Renauld Petit Lego takes the famous meme to its natural next incarnation. If you’re unfamiliar, the Awkward Monkey, as it’s known, is a famous meme used to convey the ever-relatable uncomfortable situation … like explaining a meme, I guess. There’s nothing awkward about the techniques used here, however: sloped cheese bricks for the snout, curved bricks for the face, and layered plates (much like you’d find in the official LEGO Star Wars helmets theme, like 75349 Captain Rex) to achieve the rounded head. And let’s not forget those eyes, of course. I can feel them staring right at me. And away. And back again.

Take another look at this Space Police 6986 box art

In the past we’ve covered 1:1 scale reproductions of boardgame boxes, computer monitors, even LEGO’s earliest wooden toys. Some builders have even set up display cases to show off original sets with some basic background mockups. What you’ve probably never seen is a lovingly recreated diorama of original box art made out of LEGO. Builder Renaud Petit has transported us back to 1989 when this Space Police set was originally produced.

Although this particular set was outside my age range, I still have nostalgic feelings for the dated old themes’ box art that featured landscaping, sunsets, and laser fields. We’d love to see this as a series: I have some recommendations. Shoot, even the recent 71043 Hogwarts Castle would look fetching with a detailed LEGO backdrop of that beautiful box!
