About Gambort

I'm a builder with a short attention span and a lot of virtual bricks. I'm probably most known as a train builder and was involved in the creation of LEGO set 10183 but I do a lot of other stuff too. I'm also a member of the LDraw SteerCo and a webmaster for the site.

Dr Transistor

Malaysian LEGO fan Teikjoon introduces us to Dr Transistor. And let’s not forget the lovely Nurse Muggins. Enough said.

How to get your LEGO event announced on The Brothers Brick

As part of the service on The Brothers Brick we like to promote LEGO related events so that our readers have a chance to look at LEGO in real life (yes, there is stuff outside the Internet). With many readers from all around the world (OK, not all around but covering a good portion of it) we are in a position to reach people that may otherwise be unaware of events in their neighbourhood.

However we are rarely the right people to give out details of events as we are not involved in their coordination. Nor do we speak most languages so cannot give information in most local dialects. As such we rely on “press releases” from these events to convey information in the most accurate manner.

So what do we mean by a ‘press release’? As a general rule it should include the following

  • Dates and locations.
  • A brief summary of what the event entails.
  • Information about public/open days.
  • A link to a website or email for contact.
  • DATES AND LOCATIONS. I’ve seen it forgotten more than once.
  • A flyer or logo image available in different sizes. We like 500px wide here but it should be no taller than 600px.
  • The same again but in the local language where applicable.

Try to keep it short but it doesn’t have to be terse. Remember you’re selling your event to people so a little bit of excitement doesn’t go astray. IT WILL BE AWESOME!!!! is probably too much excitement.

Once you’ve written your “press release,” send it our way using the Contact Us page.

So, that’s how to get your LEGO event announced.

Thanks!

Piracy on the high seas

Al McLarens Pirate ship

Allister McLaren (Captain_Underpants) has a novel take on near-futurustic piracy. The solar and wind generators are an excellent touch and the islander boats give it a plausibly rickety feel. Given the fondness of media companies to misuse piracy and their access to those in power this could prove all too prescient.

Sleek like a fox

As a general rule I’m quite enamoured of streamliners due to their sleek shapes and art deco stylings. Unfortunately many LEGO renditions leave me feeling a little cold due to the difficulty of pulling off the subtle curves and colouring. However Benn Coifman hasn’t disappointed me with this rendition of an Norfolk and Western J-class along with a full rake (all the carriages). The coal in the tender is particularly cool.

Sailing the seven seas

My (pseudo-)version of the French lugger Le Coureur. Unlike my usual self-pimps you’re going to get a bit of backstory on this… ignore hereafter if you’re into tl;dr.

I started this a long time ago. First I worked out how to do the hull and built it. And then it sat there… waiting for more inspiration. Next thing I went on a minifig and accessories building spree. And then it sat there… The masts came next and it was almost done but. Then it sat there… Today it stopped sitting there. I finished it off, added some (custom) sails, bought a sheet just to photograph it and went snap-happy.

EDIT: And a big thanks to CO Richie Dulin for all his help.

More than one way to skin an APC

Gears of War APC

One sure way of attracting my attention to your LEGO model is making it look bigger than it is. HAZEL-Fantasy (HAZEL-頑張ります!) has created a version of the Gears of War APC that’s well-crafted, detailed, beautifully curved and small. I’m quite blown away. It’s also nice to see a model of an APC that isn’t the (very cool) one from Aliens.

Rob Dasnewten on Concept Ships

GP-21 Shrike

We’ve blogged Rob Dasnewten here many times. One of my favourite non-LEGO blogs, the accurately named Concept Ships, has gone one step further and published an excellent roundup of his work. Nice work, Rob.

The ship pictured above is Rob’s latest: the GP-21 Shrike.

Brickvention 2009

Brickvention

A heads up for all those Australian LEGO fans out there. I plan to attend and hope to have a blast.

Brickvention is Australia’s own LEGO convention and it’s only a few months away!

The 2009 Brickvention will be held over the Australia Day Long Weekend (January 24th to 25th) in Melbourne, Australia and promises to be an exciting event.

Following on from the success of the previous years, there will be competitions, presentations, demonstrations and lots of interesting things to see and do.

Highlights of the weekend include:

  • MOC displays (including town, modular houses, train, moonbase, and space)
  • Building competitions
  • Dirty Brickster
  • Dirty Buildster
  • Build-in-a bag
  • Timed build
  • Brickfilms
  • Brikwars
  • Trade tables

We’re all really excited about the event and can’t wait to meet lots of other AFOLs from all over Australia and around the world.

Want to know more about the event? Check out the website at http://www.brickventures.com

Huts in town

Tim Goulds House

As part of my patriotic duty I bring you all my latest bit of fun: a generic Australian worker’s cottage. These are quite common in certain suburbs in most Australian cities and date back to the turn of the 20th Century. I kept the design fairly simple to facilitate repetition and variation, just like the real things.

Dash to the finish

Scott Wardlaws UP

I never expected to see the nose of a GE Dash-9 done well in LEGO. The double down slope is one of the most difficult shapes to achieve. By making clever use of a triangular flag Scott Wardlaw has finally pulled it off in this lovely eight-wide version of the locomotive. Seeing solutions like this is one big reason I love LEGO trains.

Xip Xap

Adrian Floreas Xapuri

Adrian Florea returns to starships with the lovely Ziy-9 Xapuri. The swing-wing configuration is just dandy.
