They’ve been fighting since they were mighty micros. Now all grown up, and they’re still at it. James Zhan portrays a battle scene between two long time enemies. They’ve been at it for 60 years, since their characters were first introduced. Of course, Captain Cold technically does not possess any mutant or evolved powers. So all the Flash needs to do to save the day would be to just use his super speed to steal the Cap’s weapon. I mean, how hard could it be?!
If you don’t recognize this famous furry bear, you were probably underage for the 2012 R-rated comedy of a walking, talking, foul-mouthed Teddy Bear brought to life by a kid’s wish. Japanese builder Moko pulls off a simple yet accurate build that captures the expression of this unique movie character. That beady-eyed stare is so very Ted, in the movie we know and love. Turns out the kid grew up and Ted was still his best buddy when the ultimate choice is presented: will it be Ted or his girlfriend?
Builder Lisqr may have an addiction even more hazardous than the hit Pokémon Go mobile game… He’s got an itch to build ‘em all. Today’s he’s got the handsome looking Charizard which is a draconic, bipedal Pokémon. The build is pretty much spot on in terms of color scheme and signature tail perpetually in flames. Quick, grab your LEGO Pokeball and capture it!
This pair of cybernetic limbs by Mitsuru Nikaido will certainly ring a bell with any familiar with the Terminator franchise, in which Miles Dyson reverse engineers technology from parts of a T-800 and sets the future on a path to doomsday and destruction.
This scene by Didier Burtin reminds me of the hit 1990 monster movie Tremors starting Kevin Bacon. It features a worm-like monster of unknown origin that terrifies folks in a desert town. It slithers underground and feels the vibrations on the surface to detect – and then rise to devour – its next victim. So, if there’s no fossil history of these gargantuan man-eating snakes, I can only deduce they must be of an alien origin.
Out with the Brickheadz and in with the BB-8’s? Apparently everything can be BB-8-ified, from other Star Wars characters, to DC or Marvel superheroes, and even the Sanrio franchise! I’m impressed by the way Handoko Setyawan has taken a simple spherical shape, and with clever interchange of colors and perhaps a distinguishing feature or two, transformed it into a range of familiar characters.
Two of my favourite spherical charms are those spikes of Darth Maul and Hello Kitty’s ribbon bow. Check out his Flickr album for a closer look at the rest of this ball-tastic invasion! We all know Batman only builds in black, and sometimes in very, very dark grey. But it seems like he’s made an exception to his rule, and it turned out pretty sweet. We have to thank Lucas for giving the Batmobile from Dawn of Justice a new shade — even if the light grey sees it remains at the darker end of the spectrum. A little something special for Comish Gordon too — a redesigned Bat-Signal in the same hue.
These cute incarnations of famous fast food characters by Eric Mok in LEGO Brickheadz fashion are a tasty treat. Ronald Mcdonald’s hairdo is spot-on, as are his clothes, right down to his collars. Eric has managed to sneak in the signature arches on Birdie’s outfit, and Hamburglar’s tie even spots a burger-like printed element. And as if the figures weren’t enough, the base stands are shaped like mouth-watering cheeseburgers.
If I was in McDonalds marketing, I’d be trying to figure out how to mass-produce these for a Happy Meal giveaway promo.
It’s not exactly the Ant-Man we know from the movies or comics, but Daniel Huang still captures the essence of this superhero. With the perfect shiny red and grey color scheme and parts to pull off a great build with enough articulation to give it great flexibility for poses. I actually like how his Imperial army issued boots have their tongues sticking out to give them that Converse look.
The torso is made from a combination of technic parts and ball joints combined with Bionicle armor plates from the Star Wars action figure series. The red shoulders blend in nicely and seem inspired by the mech from the new 76077 Iron Man Detroit Steel Strikes set.
This beautiful recreation of a 1940’s New Jersey commuter train is simply breathtaking with the effort to the details put into it. It was carefully researched by Cale Leiphart who eventually fell in love with what he calls the “Jersey Girl” and set his heart on building it, and the result is astounding.
The locomotive was built with a LEGO Power Functions motor tucked inside the engine. The luxurious looking coach was built soon after, using a local New Jersey coach from the early 1920s as reference.
If ever LEGO was to build an Ultimate Collector Series for trains, this is the level of detail that fans would love to see. Read more about Cale’s journey and inspiration in the documentation of his love story.
If you’ve actually owned all three of these technological evolutions of television as depicted by Didier Burtin then you deserve an accolade! And maybe some help blowing out all the candles on your next birthday cake. The flat screen TV may be the last of its kind, as the only thing that’s growing are its huge cinema-like dimensions, and they make it easier than ever to “cut the cord” and move away from cable or broadcast services. I took the plunge two years ago – technically the only way I consume my media now is via streaming onto my flat screen. I’m willing to bet the next step are your tablet or mobile devices, with the ubiquitous TV set slowly going the way of the dodo. There’s no going back!
Chess fans from the 80’s will instantly recognise this battle between two brilliant masterminds at the Chess Championships held in Moscow. The match between Garry Kasparov and defending champion Anatoly Karpov in 1985 was the only championship match to be abandoned without a result to date. Builder Leonid An brilliantly captures the deep thought process and tense atmosphere of this famous match. The small touches that bring it to life include the use of red capes to represent the two flags of the countrymen.
