So it goes.

Generally speaking, I don’t consider most Lego builds ‘art’. Most of the time, builders just want to make a cool castle or spaceship or whatever. When someone wants to convey a message through a build, it’s all too often done in a heavyhanded manner.

Not so with this scene by Brian Rinker (Âtin). The construction and technique is all top-notch, but it’s the understated framing here that transcends the medium.

Military Proliferation

There have been a whole ton of awesome armored vehicles getting posted lately. I’ve always had a fondness for APCs and these beefy 8-wheelers don’t disappoint.

First up by Quogg is this nicely rendered duo. Digital building makes it easier to swap around configurations and he puts it to good effect here, as well as with his other builds.
MWC-2 (IFV) and MTC-2 (Anti-Air)

Tyler Clites has been an unrelenting MOCing machine lately, and while he doesn’t often turn his talents to modern military the results are always fantastic.

Stryker

Last but certainly not least is military trendsetter Andrew Somers. Andrew has been continuously and carefully refining a stable of military vehicles, and while the changes may be subtle each new iteration has been better than the last.

Ready for takeoff

Corvin Stichert just finished this massive Airbus A400m Atlas, and now it’s ready to haul his fleet of military materiel anywhere in the world.

Be sure to check out all the pictures of this beast; the various MOCs set up next to the plane really drive home just how big this machine is.

Last rites

Mihai Marius Mihu brings us another in his series of strange, otherworldly and vaguely unsettling creations. This sculpted priest might be my favorite thus far, with a fantastic mix of subtle spacing and layering which wouldn’t look out of place in either Pan’s Labyrinth or Prometheus.

Pauper and Prince

It’s 2-for-1 mecha tuesday, and zi zy is presenting us with both the bare-bones rough and ready groundpounder;

As well as his fully tricked out, all options included ivy league cousin. Heated leather seats and extra large cup holders come standard.

Too adorable to smush

This cleverly constructed mosquito by CaptainSmog could almost be forgiven for landing on your arm, if it weren’t several orders of magnitude larger than the real thing. Those plaintive eyes warrant at least a small blood donation.

The hardscrabble Scarabee

This subtly menacing starfighter by Shamisenfred conveys a chitinous armored look all the more impressive for its still uncommon olive green livery. The sticker work is phenomenal as well, but the curved cockpit has to be my favorite detail.

Microfig-scale Cherno Alpha is ready to kick kaiju butt

Jason Corlett spent 70 hours making this faithful replica of the hulking Cherno Alpha jaeger from Pacific Rim. Standing almost three feet tall, this build looks ready to cancel the apocalypse all on its own.

Blood for the blood god, skulls for the skull throne

There’s been something of a renaissance in computer rendered Lego builds lately, and leading the charge is the prolific Garry (Garry_rocks).

Using parts in colors that have never been available toes the line of what I consider cheating, but there’s no question that the results are stunning. I’m particularly fond of these two fearsome builds from the Warhammer 40k universe.

Mechs on a Train

legorobo:waka shares this awesome armored train carrying a squad of tough looking mecha. The train’s brutal lines and tank turrets evoke a dieselpunk style, with just the right amount of detail mixed in alongside the solid slab-like surfaces.

All the news that fits in print

This comic book backdrop by Thorsten Bonch (Xenomurphy) is an impressive exercise in scale, using the large-font logo of the infamous fictional tabloid as the setting for two lesser-known characters from the Spider-Man franchise to duke it out.

When winter arrives, this is where I want to be

Lego, by its very nature, can often look fragile and plastic, but this castle by Gideon_83 is impressively solid and substantial. The nicely textured walls are thick and imposing, and the battlements and numerous arrow slits seem ready to rain fire on anyone trying to arrive with a battering ram.
