Gettin’ steamy with Rocko

Rocko‘s second entry in the FBTB Steam-Wars contest (following on his world-famous TIE fighter) is an excellent speeder bike. The boiler is simple yet effective, and the multiple propellors (for lift and forward propulsion) give this classic Star Wars vehicle a truly steampunk flair.

(Incidentally, Matt Forcum has been working on a speeder with a similar front and back end, but with a very interesting — and hilarious — twist. Not to detract from Rocko’s great speeder, but I’m also looking forward to Matt’s.)

Clone Wars V-19 Torrent by nnenn

Nnenn had some issues with LEGO’s official version of the V-19 Torrent fighter, from the upcoming Star Wars Clone Wars TV show, so he made his own.

What’s so very very cool about nnenn’s version is that the folding wings are synchronized. Check out the gears:

Steampunk TIE fighter

Rocko transformed the classic TIE fighter in the theme of steampunk for the Steam Wars contest on FBTB. The model is easily recognizable and at the same time completely novel. Good luck in the contest Rocko.

News: Don and dW’s Steam-Wars contest on FBTB

Don Solo and dWhisper on FBTB Forums have started an interesting contest that should generate some very cool LEGO creations. The idea is simple: Recreate any Star Wars vehicle in a steampunk style.

As a (small) example of the sort of design the judges are going for, Don posted this adorable little steampunk R2-D2:

I can’t wait to see what sort of cool vehicles people will come up with.

Bionicle Droideka by hyf326

The minifig-scale Droideka (or Destroyer Droid) in official LEGO sets kind of balls up, but not really. hyf326 has built a fully functional Droideka from Bionicle. Okay, it doesn’t actually roll around and go “pew pew!” Still cool though.

Evangelion Mass Production Type minifig by Mike Crowley

Mike Crowley wins. He just does. At everything. More specifically, he’s found 7668 Rebel Scout Speeder and promptly created a truly unique minifig using the new helmet. Behold! Eva Mass Prodution Type (from the anime series Evangelion).

Adrian builds uglier

Indeed, Adrian Florea built another “ugly” fighter from the Star Wars universe since his previous Natai, this time mashing together a V-wing and a lambda shuttle.

Vader gets his own guards

If the Emperor gets his personal guards, why can’t the dark lord himself? When I found those red Darth Vader helmets on Bricklink, I knew what I had to do.

Walking with giants

It’s been a while since Matt (aka lowlead) built, but he shows that he’s still got the skills, in fact… amazing skills! Matt’s AT-AT has been evolving for more than seven years, and the latest v4.0 shows the AT-AT in it’s fullest grandeur.

Here’s more information on this model:

“Although somewhat conventional in construction by today’s standards, this MOC represents more than seven years of evolution and has been a favorite of mine ever since version 1. When I first saw Dave Eaton and Shaun Sullivan’s Hoth diorama, I had to build a UCS style AT-AT of my own.

v4.0 better represents the actual ILM models with a re-designed head, legs and drive cams that articulate in the manner they do in EpV, a new neck, a higher center body section, and a completely re-designed drive section using some metallic wheel hubs from the Silver Champion race car.

Due to weight (it’s reeeeeely hefty) and structural issues, this remains a sculpture MOC, with no interior…for now.

The only disadvantage of fully poseable legs is the mandatory support stand. While it stands free when the legs are positioned straight, the doubled-up clicky joints just aren’t hearty enough to support its weight when the knees are bent, or the legs positioned fore or aft.”

Mike Crowley is one of the most talented builders in the universe and a really nice guy too! (Go to Chinese food with him sometime, its great.) He is also the only person I know who has gotten an official copyright on his screen-name (“Count Blockula”, all rights reserved by Mike Crowley).
