Choose wisely, as these delicious-looking mushrooms, by Dirk VH, are quite the power-ups! Weighing in at ten pounds a piece, the center one is the retro version of the power-up that turns Mario into Super Mario, while the blue one shrinks him down. The green one, of course, is the much sought after “1-Up” that gives you an extra life. Check out the time-lapse construction video as well!
This Lego rendition of the classic Super Smash Brothers by Daniel Church brings me back to my middle school days when I played this game. The stage of Peach’s Castle is instantly recognizable and features miniland-scale Nintendo characters by Nick Jensen and Casey McCoy.
CK Tsang (chiukeung) continues his fantastic series of miniaturized retro hardware with a LEGO Nintendo Entertainment System, complete with Light Gun for playing Duck Hunt.

Flushing New York’s Baron Julius von Brunk has constructed an enormous fully functional NES controller to play his favorite old school cartridge games.
I was on the fence about blogging what amounts to a giant box, but once I saw this photo of the good Baron, I was unable to resist the magnetic power of the mutton chops. The builder also has some interesting LEGO related ink on display for the tattoo afficianados out there. Be sure to check out the other photos in the set to see the internal structure and wiring.
In January 2007, Mike Crowley began building all the major characters from Nintendo’s Mario Kart games, starting with King Koopa himself, Bowser.
Mike soon followed with Mario and Toad:

Mike brought all of these to BrickFest PDX 2007 in Portland, where he had them all in karts that I don’t think ever ended up online (if I remember correctly, Mike hadn’t taken pictures of them in their karts yet before the con, and the figures broke on their way home to Boston). Convention photos are never as good as a builder’s own, but I did manage to snag a shot of all of them together:
BrickFest PDX was of course the LEGO convention where Mike, Caylin, Josh, and I all went out for Chinese at a place called “House of Louie.” We all piled into Portland’s light rail system (MAX), crossed the Willamette River, and got off somewhere that we thought would have better restaurants than the ones around the Oregon Convention Center (remember, smartphones with Yelp and local search weren’t as ubiquitous as they are five years later).
Appropriately and strangely, a white LEGO horse stood on a counter near our booth.
The Like a Boss contest deadline is coming up in just a couple of weeks, and we’re starting to see some really nice entries. This LEGO Bowser by Zane Houston is giving the competition a run for its money — or at least lots of gold coins.
