This creation by Shamisenfred isn’t a duck or a penguin or anything else that’d make sense in the context of an underwater bird mecha. It’s an ostrich wearing a hardsuit.
Since I don’t own any of the new ostriches yet, I’m not sure whether the heads simply detach, or if tools are involved. In order to suit my purist heart, I’ll assume that the head was easily removed and affixed onto this body. There’s just something about the ostrich wearing goggles and a snorkel that really amuses me.
Brian Kescenovitz (mondayn00dle) is another builder who probably has more works featured on our blog than not. What makes this creation unique is the combination of an emotionally arousing scene and backstory (yes, a Lego creation can be more than eye-candy). The rust stains on the rare Bionicle mask of the hardsuit mirrors the stains of blood and adds to the twisted setting. The hardsuit also seats a complete minifig.
So Lord Dane put a suit in yo suit so you can stomp while you stomp.
(I realize that I have added nothing of value to this post. The suit is that many kinds of awesome.)

In contrast to the playful Roman creatures that might have inspired this suit, I suspect this little guy is ready to get some work done.
I have no idea what “Twilight Sun” or “USDF” are, but I do know that this hardsuit by Luke Lyons (Tac) has more greeblage than is absolutely necessary. In some cases, too much of a good thing is still a good thing.
The little red HUD adds a splash of color, and even the feet have guns.
Alvaro Gunawan (pyrefyre) treats us to a new hardsuit “For times when a regular space suit just doesn’t work.”
This one works rather nicely, though I have to admit that if I squint my eyes, it does look just a little bit like it has a duck’s face…
Tim Zarki (Spook) gets things going with our mini-roundup today. His most recent pair of hardsuits are certainly excellent, but I particularly love the presentation on the “GOLEM Strikesuit” on the right.
Kevin Blocksidge (Kevoh) suspects that the shine may be wearing off District 9, but nevertheless built an accurate minifig-scale Praun biosuit, with Wikus Van De Merwe for scale.
Finally, Monkfish44 created “a spindly tin-can that swims.”
…and then there are hard suits.
Lord Dane takes the chunkification of hardsuits to new heights with this LEGO Star Wars suit operated by a clone trooper. The legs are wholly unique, while fitting in nicely to the Imperial aesthetic.
If Mikhail Koshkin had survived to design a robotic hardsuit and Mikhail Kalashnikov were to design its weapon, this is what it would look like.
This hardsuit by Chuck Citrin (Chewk) incorporates extensive stickers from the Russian vehicles in the LEGO Indiana Jones sets from Crystal Skull.
Clearly, Soviet-inspired retro-futurism is not the sole domain of our very own Gambort.
Larry Lars has been posting a series of cool little figures he calls “Larryfigs”. Somewhere between tiny mecha and hardsuits, Larry demonstrates that these offer a wide range of possibility.
Alvaro Gunawan (Pyrefyre) has been churning out cool variants on a hardsuit he designed, including this post-apoc version. With minifig legs for arms, it’s fully articulated, and has even inspired some excellent cover versions, like an Armored Paratrooper by KryptonHeidt.
