Living the Highland Life: Creating A Scottish Castle in LEGO [Feature]

When I volunteered to help run the new Tales of Old game (it’s a medieval LEGO RPG!) on EuroBricks in September 2025, I had no idea I’d have a massive castle keep sitting in the middle of my build area a month later!

In the game, I created a character named Duncan, who is loosely based on real-world medieval Celtic and Gaelic cultures. Duncan has a Scottish tam hat from the bagpiper CMF, and kilted-torso from the Highland Warrior CMF, plus he sports a large black mustache and BrickArms claymore.

A LEGO castle legend returns to the Guilds of Historica

Since 2013, over in the Eurobricks forums, Castle fans have been building out a shared fantasy world with story arcs and challenges called Guilds of Historica. Peter Ilmrud is a longtime member of the community who hasn’t added to the world in a while, but returned last month with a beautiful piece of forced perspective featuring his sigfig Parzival approaching a desert metropolis.

With just the microscale model in focus, we can better appreciate the wonderful technique, like one boat made with chocolate frogs and another from a hotdog bun, an upturned butterfly net as a dome, and a book cover for a tent.

Peter promises that the microscale model above is just an appetizer for a larger return to Guilds of Historica next year. Based on the builder’s previous creations in the setting, we’re in for a treat. Here is Peter’s creation from the GoH 10th anniversary contest two years ago – the Port of Zamorah. Summer Faction Festival invites you to show your true space colors [News]

LEGO has blessed classic space fans in recent years with minifig spacemen in new colors, callbacks to old factions, and a couple of re-imagined sets. What we haven’t had in ages is an actual new LEGO faction in the tradition of the 80s and 90s, when every year or two would bring in a new spin on Space. Over on the Eurobricks forums, Bob De Quatre is hosting a contest that lets anyone create a new faction based on a constrained color palette. It seems like an amazing way for veteran Classic Space builders as well as new voices in the community to celebrate LEGO’s space legacy with a creative spin. Large builds, small builds, and even just minifig-focused creations have a category, so why dust off those oxygen tanks and fire up your ray guns and sign up over at the Eurobrick forums.

Perhaps you’ll find your groove like Angus MacLane did with the totally chill Browntron faction (which pre-dates the Summer Faction Festival but fits the rules)

Have a cup of joe at this down-to-earth coffee house

This LEGO coffee house build comes to us from Isaac Snyder for this year’s Eurobricks event. The task? Building a house with significance to the builder. In this case, Isaac draws inspiration from a local coffee shop. Let’s take a closer look at the house, starting with the outdoor furniture. Check out the chairs with the tables! Some nice usage of brackets for the chairs’ seats and back, paired nicely with those plates with shafts. That’s something I really adore with builds of this scale–the parts usage ends up being really creative to imply/represent what the builder wants for the model. There are more techniques at work here too, like the brickwork. Using those half curved 1×1 tiles throughout the textured and plain bricks gives more depth and shaping to what would be flat walls otherwise. Excellent build all around from mine eyes.

Using height to dodge danger in sight

When LEGO launched the Islanders line in 1994, it made for an interesting addition to LEGO Pirates. In carrying on the legacy of this cherished theme, LEGO fan website Eurobricks has created a fictional pirate-themed universe. The lost city of Myzectlan, in particular, is reminiscent of the Islanders. Eurobricks’ “Daily Life in Myzectlan” collaborative building challenge has inspired some excellent models, such as this lush and lively jungle scene by Stefan G. With a big cat on the prowl, two Myzec travelers bide their time by hiding out in a miraforma. In the Myzec world, miraforma are used to hide from predators on the jungle floor. They also make for good lookout posts.

Ready, Set, Escargot!

This past weekend saw one of the world’s great annual LEGO conventions arrive, Brickworld Chicago. With it came dozens of new builds and spectacular collaborations to dazzle the public. One such dazzling display came from the builders of Eurobricks, a popular online LEGO forum, who built a spectacularly intense and hilarious snail race for the ages.

This award-winning collaboration was a truly large and world-spanning operation kept together with tight planning and a singular cohesive snail design made by team leader Mark Larson. His design, which was itself awarded the title of Best Creature at the convention, was used by nine other builders to construct more snails which were individualized with unique colors and themed castles–and then finally placed into an epic race.
