About Dan

Dan Rubin has been an AFOL (Adult Fan of LEGO) since he became an adult. He joined the larger AFOL community on LUGNET in 2003, and that was also the year in which he attended his first BrickFest. Dan largely builds space MOCs, so it should come as no surprise that he is also the Main Admin of the forums at Classic-Space.com. He is also the creator of the Galactic Inquisition space theme. Dan has been a member of the LEGO Ambassador program since the third cycle of the program. Read more about the program here. You can check out Dan's LEGO creations on Flickr.

Vic Vipers

Many people have posted Vic Viper models recently. Most are meant for the fly-ins scheduled in tribute to the fallen builder Nnenn. Here’s one of my favorites, along with a reminder to look for the fly-in at whatever Lego fan convention you may be attending this year.

It’s a build by “The One And Only Mr.R” using my old favorite color, tan. It includes some nice compound angles, as well as an uncommonly compact shape. It also incorporates Nnenn’s favorite piece.

The last of the V8 Interceptors

Patrick (Jason son) has given us an excellent rendition of Mad Max’s car. I’m not certain of how common this car ever was as a police interceptor in Australia, but I like to think that they’re running around all over the place. Remember, two men enter, one man leaves.

Delightfully blocky

It’s not just the blocky and chunky shape of this dropship by Flickr’s (Pha][_,][_,) that I enjoy, either. I’m also very much enjoying the color blocking built into that form. I’m also a fan of all the various forms intersecting one another. This ship serves as a great example that a great design is more important than fancy new parts or techniques.

It’s a rubber band holder

I seem to have a fascination with creations that successfully make use of “useless” parts. That’s why, when I saw his creation at a Wamalug display last week, I asked Bret Harris (starbeanie) to take some photos. This part doesn’t even have any studs!

An Intruder that’d be welcome in my home

It’s the FE-17 Intruder, by Patrick Chambers. It’s an awesome bunch of chunk. It’s bulky, angular, and has a patchy color scheme that all just comes together into a pleasing fighter craft.

What to do with Bionicle feet?

How about build an awesome little mecha, with a foot for armor on the body? That’s what Fredo (Fredoichi) has done with his new Hayaku v3 – Gun Runner.

There aren’t many parts available in the sand green color of the Bionicle foot he’s used, so he’s found a novel solution. He’s gone ahead and ripped the legs off of some minifigs, and used their hips as a detail piece.

Space Miners

I just LOVE this micro scale space mining ship. Michael Lehmann (Chiefrocker9000) has done a great job creating a realistic feeling utility space craft. The boom at the front in particular is quite striking. The color scheme is also quite pleasant, despite incorporating glaringly bright lime green.

Beautiful Plumage

This may be a small creation, but this latest by Karf Oolhu wins a lot of points for creativity. He’s made very creative use of the strange options available for connectivity on the very strange headdress piece.

Sobani Field Command Ship

I’ve never really built micro scale before, but I can certainly recognize a good creation. Take this Sobani ship by Pierre E Fieschi. Every part has a purpose, and each little bit is used to represent some undefinable space ship detail. Then, they’re all wrapped around a shape that’s entirely unconventional.

I’m also a big fan of the color scheme. I too have felt the siren song of dark red and tan on a big creation. I think both Pierre and I have to blame the designers at LEGO for using this color scheme in the Dino Attack line. Add that the Dino Attack sets were easy to find on clearance, and Pierre’s fleet becomes possible.

Firefox Star Racer

Apparently I’m having a rough time kick-starting myself back into blogging. The first thing I posted today had been posted by one of the other Brothers Brick. Therefore, I’m posting something of my own, that I managed to finally photograph recently. None of the others can possibly have beaten me to this one.

I started building this way back in December, with the intent of sending it to a buddy. For some reason, I couldn’t help but take it in a comical direction. Once I had the idea of building something facelike on the front of the cockpit area, I couldn’t resist the temptation.

I used to absolutely hate LEGO orange. I’ve been making an active effort to use it lately, and it’s really starting to grow on me. Even the worst color can come alive (or be dulled to be less offensive) when combined with the right other colors.

Checkmate

I play a lot of board games, and while chess isn’t at the top of my rotation, I still appreciate a nice set. This little set by akunthita looks like the perfect thing to bring on a flight or road trip to a Lego convention.

I think its the presence of drawers to store the pieces that really makes this thing for me. The pieces are expressive enough to get the point across, especially given their small dimensions. Of course, with a Lego chess set, there’s no risk of the pieces falling over when you hit a bump.

The Best of nnenn: MRMP

As we’ve said, nnenn‘s building was as much about making fun toys for his sons to play with as it was about style.

This creation is a great example of where he really brought playability to his work. The roving city/base has a great style, and the aircraft with it aren’t shabby either. The great thing is, you don’t just get one of those things, you get them all. It looks like more fun than Autobot City, and I’m sure most kids could spend countless hours playing with this thing. I love it.
