We here at The Brothers Brick have poured through the list of LEGO builders we’ve featured on the site for 2023. With so many excellent creations blogged by us in those 365 days, it’s always tough to find the singular builder who went above and beyond in that time – who not only rose above their peers, but also improved upon their work from past years. And when we specifically looked for someone who seriously stepped up their game in the year 2023, it was clear who fit the bill.

The Brothers Brick is thrilled to announce that Dicken Liu is our TBB LEGO Builder of the Year for 2023.

We featured Dicken Liu’s work on the site a whopping nine times over the course of the last year, each one an absolute banger of a creation. And we still didn’t cover all the blog-worthy creations he came up with! His work is of a consistently high quality, regardless of size or subject matter. And that subject matter varied greatly last year from a microscale lighthouse, a wire-frame panther, and even a train in the theme of fried chicken. The cartoonish Crazy Chick remains one of the most memorable builds we featured on TBB this past year.

But more often than not, Dicken Liu tackled more serious works with a beauty typically reserved for fine art. This gorgeous gold and while Kuan-Yin sculpture below won our Creation of the Week contest back in May. It displays such a mastery of form that it’s almost indescribable. He knows the exact part he needs in the LEGO library to meet a specific need, much like a painter or sculptor uses a precise technique to capture a detail within their piece. This skill is on full display in his Jinxia Cave build from this past year, as well.

One of the final flourishes that Dicken Liu put on 2023 was debuted in November, when he released his version of the Super Mario Fire Flower upon the world. In the wake of 71426 Piranha Plant‘s release, this iconic creation from the video game world hit the internet at just the right time. In our comments sections on social media, it was met with constant requests for either purchase or the instructions – the true mark of a build adored by the public! It’s definitely one of my favorite creations of 2023.
