Brothers Brick LEGO Builder of the Year 2018 [News]

Each day the team here at The Brothers Brick brings you the best LEGO models from the global community of LEGO builders. Their creations inspire, excite, and amuse us every day. But each year there are a handful of builders who take things to new heights — displaying their skills across a range of building styles, and amazing us with their parts usage and building techniques.

The Brothers Brick is delighted to name Chi Hsin Wei (AKA LEGO 7) as our LEGO Builder of the Year 2018.

Best LEGO builder of 2018

LEGO 7 has had an incredible year, in both quantity and quality of LEGO creations. Across a range of styles and subjects, he’s showcased excellent building skills. We’ve loved seeing the different models he’s built during 2018, and we hope you’ll enjoy this retrospective look at his last twelve months…

At the start of 2018, we were impressed with this Caterpillar dump truck — packed full of detail for such a tight model. It’s a great example of a skilled builder taking a typical subject for a classic LEGO City set and turning things up to 11…

LEGO Caterpillar Dumper Truck

Sticking with the City vehicle theme, we saw this wonderful Hot Dog Truck. The sign on top might grab the initial attention, but this thing was packed with detail, including a range of cooking equipment packed inside…

LEGO Street Food Truck

Next up, something completely different. Large-scale character building, inspired by Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Ballet. The three musical soldiers, and the accompanying Rat King accordionist, are great fun, but don’t let the colourful blocky style mislead you that these models are simple. Perfect parts choices and shaping here, particularly on the instruments and headgear…

And then, another dramatic shift of style and subject — a trio of adorable dogs. Well-sculpted, these three puppy pals were packed with detail and character for such small models…

LEGO Terrier St Bernard Collie

From one set of furry friends to another. A quick trip to the Forest Moon of Endor saw LEGO 7 build a brilliant family of Ewoks, complete with a Stormtrooper helmet all set to play the role of timpani drum…

LEGO Endor Ewok Celebration

Sticking with Star Wars, we were wowed by this pair of Stormtrooper figures and their impressive Dewback mount. Again, it’s a combination of well-sculpted shapes and fine detailing which make these models stand out…

LEGO Sandtrooper and Dewback

We then saw a series of impressive mech models, our favourite of which was this Centaur Knight creation with great poseability and a lovely colour scheme…

LEGO Fantasy Centaur Robot

After all the space age stuff, LEGO 7 brought us back to Earth for a nice cup of coffee…

LEGO Coffee and Donuts

And a touch of anime-styled character building…

LEGO Arale anime

Before revealing an absolutely stunning large-scale Breaking Bad Walter White figure — stuffed with meth-making details…

LEGO Breaking Bad

If cooking up drugs is too full-on a form of criminality for you, maybe you’ll be more comfortable with jewellery theft? If so, check out this super-cute Niffler, which showcased (once again) LEGO 7’s mastery of shaping and parts choice…

LEGO Fantastic Beasts

Then, inspired by the LEGO Voltron set, we got a Voltron Lion Secret Base, hidden within a lovely Egyptian Sphinx…

LEGO Voltron Sphinx

And then, to finish the year in style, we got a beefy brick-built version of Winston from Overwatch. Once again, the sculpting was on-point, particularly the gorilla’s face and muscular limbs…

Winston-Overwatch Hero

All-in-all, it’s a brilliant body of work, and a collection which leaves you breathless when you consider it’s only edited highlights of twelve months’ worth of creativity. There’s been an impressive quantity of output, at an incredibly high level of quality — and that’s why Chi Hsin Wei is the Brothers Brick LEGO Builder of the Year 2018.
